ugh, subject zero is the worst character I've seen in a long time. She's basically Poochy in a grimdark universe.

I hope I can avoid bringing her into the squad entirely.

If you're being serious, you're also a silly billy.

It's a 1:40 minute vignette. You really do not know enough to judge at all whether she's a poorly written character. Whether she's not the kind of character you enjoy having around is another matter.

While I hated the trailer, I'm much more optimistic about the character in general.

I mean, I thought Kaiden was boring until I, you know, actually talked to him.
And I assumed that Wrex would be dumb brute like the rest of his species until I, you know, actually talked to him.

So what you're saying is, there will be a scene in there were we see that Subject Zero's behavior is all just a front, and that she's not just some angry face, but a deeply nuanced and troubled individual. Then she dies.

But really, I think it's the trailer more than anything that makes her seem like a horrible character. We'll need gameplay interaction footage to know for sure. :S

No, but it is an intro video. To introduce the character, thus I think i'm right to assume it is representative of her actual character.

If I came up to you said 'hey this is my friend Dave, he likes to vomit in peoples' faces and then kick them in the balls' you probably wouldn't hesitate to declare Dave somebody you don't want to be friends with.

S0 is clearly too XTREME for my taste.

Although come to think of it, that could have been a 24th century sanitary towel advert.

No, even as satire, the comparison to Poochy is brilliant. One is a character that was created to bring a little more grit and attitude to an environment that had become boring and predictable. The other is Poochy.

Really, I have a hard time thinking that BioWare held a bunch of random focus groups and discovered that what everybody wanted to see was a Mouthy Riot Grrrl. Especially given the reactions from more dedicated followers of the game.

No, I agree with you. Subject Zero isn't really a character to my tastes. But whether or not she's a poor character (IE poorly written) is another matter entirely. No argument on earth is going to make the claim "1:40 is sufficient time in which to gauge whether she is a well written character or not" look anything other than completely ludicrous.

Edit: And now I'm going to go on a complete tangent. Did anyone else ever notice that it's never established why Wrex is with the party of ME1 past the Citadel station? His function was to aid in finding a link to Tali and thereby proof of Saren's guilt, that's it. They never explained why he stayed or why they let him.

I believe it's possible to avoid taking Garrus and Wrex. You simply tell them to fuck off on the Citadel.

Generally: 'Because he was "useful"'. Of course, it makes less sense if you take care of Fist before finding Wrex... It's best not to think too hard about that particular plot hole.

She doesn't actually seem all that extreme. I murdered over 1000 people in the game I played. And committed xenocide. And I may have given a woman's child some sort of weird genetic disease.

Oh, and every chance I got, I would Lift people off of things that were high enough to kill them, or Throw. Or Warp/Overload/Throw and watch them flail and die. I think "likes to kill things a lot" is kind of a requirement for being on Shepard's team.

Edit: WHY was WREX in your party?

My lord. My good, sweet lord. Wrex is the man Shepard will one day marry. Wrex is wicked good at making people die. Wrex is awesome and has a cool scar. These are all valid reasons to keep him close forever.

Over enthusiastic fanboy love of Wrex makes me so sad. He had some funny lines, but as a character he didn't do much for me. Probably in part because his motivations for being there for 90% of the game are not clearly identified. Am I even paying him? Fuck I don't know. It's important to note that I don't think he's bad, he just seems to get far more love than he deserves. It would be like Kaidan having a massive fan club. Kaidan's a cool guy but he's not that cool.

    As for Subject Zero...

People in real world curse a lot and are crude, rude, assholes. More at 11. I will say though that I do hope that armor equipped can change her clothing.

Actually, what's weird is that she looks a lot like one of the characters I made. Only mine was scarred and ugly.

I hope that's changed in ME2, actually. Way too few options for cool war wounds on the women. Also, oddly, they give you only healed scars which look almost more off-putting in the context of space hero.

Edit: Garrus and Wrex were cool and had funny stories. They were also the only aliens that looked anything like aliens instead of "people, but um... oh, fuck it." They also are the only people who aren't sanctimonious pricks when you're a Renegade.

I don't think I'd care for a festering, open wound. Not without re-naming Shepard as Nurgle, anyway...

And Ashley was also mostly indifferent about Renegade actions. At least I don't remember her giving a damn one way or another. I am pretty sure that in a Wrex/Garrus combo, Garrus takes the more Paragon side when it comes to choices like the Rachni Queen.

Sooo... in the middle of yet another ME playthrough.

This time I'm being downright mean to Ashley, and I'm discovering even more character nuance and awesome than I did when I was nice to her. I gotta say, I really like Kaidan, but Ash is quickly taking top spot in my future roster.

Yeah, actually. Though my Ugly Shepard works so well for Renegade. So angry, angry at... himself?

And I don't mean big-ol open wounds on the female Shepard. I mean like Wrex or Male Shepard. Cool looking, scar-like. The one I put on a female character ended up looking like she had accidentally put an extra layer of fat on top of her nose.

I would worry about losing my dick in there.

    Seriously though, quick question...

I just got Mass Effect through Steam, is the game already pre-patched? I tried to install the 1.02 patch and it said it couldn't find the game installed. Does Steam do it automatically?

Don't use the 1.02 patch installer on the steam version of ME.
The Steam version already has the patch and the 1.02 patch was made to be used on the version of the game with securom present so you would have difficulty running it properly from steam anyways.

You didn't think they'd allow you to make her 'uglier' than shaving her head (or super-deforming her features due to a shitty customisation setup...) did you? I didn't care for the deep scars the men had anyway. But then, the skin had a waxen look to it, so that didn't help much.

I did like the one scar option that cut through the eyebrow (don't remember if the male had anything similar) and also had the slight scar on the lip. But I do agree that if a male Shepard had deep scars, the female should've at least had that option, too.

You could avoid Garrus and Wrex, and I know that, at least, you could tell Garrus he wasn't welcome. You could still walk over and grab him at any time during your playthrough later, tho. Wrex probably had the same thing going for him.

Everyone else you pretty much had to let tag along, even Ashley, no matter what you thought of her competence and the fact that you pretty much just let her walk onboard for no reason (except of course the otherwise nullified choice later on). And remember.. it's just downright mean to ignore a character that's taken months of hard labor to craft!
