Preview of the Mass Effect comic

Seems alright, though the art leaves something to be desired. Liara also seems like much more of a badass than how she was portrayed in the game.

    Okay, between SuZe and this...

Why is Mass Effect going EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEME? Is this EA's meddling?

What's wrong with Liara growing a spine? Going by the preview, she only swatted the thugs when they tried to shake her down and implicitly suggested sexually assaulting her. She was polite and still a bit geeky with the elcor.

Given that MY Liara is Level 50 and just reached Virmire, I have no problem believing that the woman who can stagger a geth colossus no longer has trouble with bouncing some low-level mercs off the wall.

EDIT: Houn: IT'S IN THE GAME!

Takyris: I was more commenting on the state of the last few comics I'd picked up, which had horrible ad to content ratio. Most likely, I'll just wait for a trade paperback; if there will be one.

Also, I'm cool with Liara growing a spine. Girl's been through some shit; you can't expect her to be the same innocent nerd fantasy she always was.

    takyris, you're forgetting the rules...
The less a character is appreciated by an individual, the more insistent the argument that the character is universally bad for all.

I think I'm missing the element of that comic that makes you think "EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEME."

I fling people off planets with my mind in ME. No doubt Liara could use "Throw" on some thugs. Heaven forbid you ever see her use a max-out Singularity in game.

Wait, reading a little about Redemption, it sounds like Commander Shepard is actually going to be in the comic? Is this right? It's not just some side-story involving Liara doing some Shepard-less things?

Oh, and since Mac has said that the comic's story is set shortly after the opening events of ME2, and the beginning of the comic mentions
Shepard disappearing after the destruction of the Normandy

    it's logical to conclude that
the Normandy's destruction happens right away in ME2

I mean, that's what I figured, but this seems pretty concrete.

Yep, that's been pretty strongly alluded to - that very early in the game the Normandy gets jumped by an unknown ship, blown away, and Shepard "dies" after being sucked out into space.

At least the Citadel gets a mention in the comic. I wonder if we'll actually set foot on it at any point in ME2.

I thought it was mentioned the Normandy could be saved based on your actions in ME2? Just like you could save everyone or let them die on the final mission.

You'll have to provide a link of some kind for that. Otherwise, you might just be confusing the Normandy with whatever ship the SR2 is.

Here was my train of thought during the comic:
Three pages in and there's already talk of gang-raping an asari? Ugh
"Elcors are great dancers"? Okay everything is forgiven.

But they do have her using contractions. Game-Liara -- at least in ME1 -- would say "You have been paid, batarian."

    Just sayin'.

After tearing a Reaper avatar apart at the molecular level, I believe Liara may have taken a brief correspondence course and learned how to turn the " ha" in "You have" into an apostrophe.

The best examples of this game's facial animation system were Anderson's wry grin and nod after I got promoted to Spectre and...

Saphira: "Huh, the consort will see you now."

Sheppard: *rubs his neck* "Why does she want to see me?"

Saphira: "I dunno, I guess you'll have to go in and see for yourself. *WINK*"

It was so goofy yet so perfect I LOL'd. Like one of those old stewardesses or a toothpaste lady. Equal parts insinuation and commercial promotion.

I always felt odd romancing either of them. It didn't feel like a balanced relationship with Shepard or something...

If Shepard was a 19 year old recruit, ITT the Liara thing would seem a lot better..to me at least

edit: It doesn't help much that Shepard seemed a lot older than 29 to me at least..

    Define old.

I'm only 29 and my shep doesn't look any older than me.

I should have said older. I don't see being able to create people who are 29 and are still rather young-ish look (e.g. Ryan Phillipe and such at that age).

The system does seem to lend itself more to beef/muscular characters . And for some reason the first skin (which is the least wrinkly) looks a bit odd if you are playing a Caucasian (I found it works better with tannish skinned asian characters or characters of a seemingly african decent).

edit: I could be wrong, this is just my experience and from what I've seen on the boards (though admittedly I haven't read through all 29 or whatever threads of "post your shepard" )

I liked the Kaidan romance. Quiet, sort of subtle, and very sweet without being overly saccharine. Plus you get an awesome dialog option in the moments before the sex. :winky:

And every Shepard I've made ends up looking exactly the same except with varying ethnicities, no matter what I do. I fail imagination.

Kaiden is a pretty cool dude.

Ashley is actually pretty interesting after you get past the space hitler thing, quoting poetry like a busta and describing her storied lineage.

I didn't like the Kaiden romance because it happened even when I didn't want it to.

I think maybe once I talked to Kaiden, and it was about Jenkin's death. Then he fucking sat there unnoticed the entire game.

and then the following happened(my thought in italics):

    Kaiden: Commander
what the hell is he doing here
Shepard: Kaiden. Something retarded about the mission
Kaiden: Something even more retarded and stupid 'cause I'm dumb
What... oh god no. No do not do the "we might die" shit now
    Shepard: Innnnnuennnnndo
    Kaiden: Back at you
....No. no no no I DIDN'T TALK TO YOU ALL GAME KAIDEN GET AWAY
    Kaiden: LET'S HAVE SEX
no no no no no no no no no no no no no
    Shepard: OK
WHAT ARE YOU DOING SHEPARD. NO! BAD! PUT YOUR PANTS BACK ON! NOT WITH KAIDEN
    Kaiden: That was fun
    Shepard: So fun

It's not just him. The romance triggers in this game pretty much go off if you talk to Liara, Ashley, or Kaidan AT ALL. The only way to get a clean romance slate for ME2 is to completely avoid talking to either romance option.

I didn't think they were that bad until I got ambushed by Ash and Liara for decision-time after talking to Ash exactly once. I mean, I get it, I'm an irresistible hunk of Grade-N7 Man Meat, but that did seem a bit premature.

I believe that this is something we're learning from in ME2 -- provided, of course, that we offer you more than one romance possibility for your gender.

At the very least, they did say if you romanced someone in the first game it won't stop you from romancing new characters in the sequel. Not surprising, but I'm still glad. I'm kind of... uh... interested in... Subject Zero. D:
