There is a thing that people do here. When their mobile phone contract is up, they call up another provider and say "my contract is up, I'm paying £X per month for Y minutes and unlimited data. What will you give me?". They give their best offer, and then the person phones the company with whom their contract has expired and say "[company] is offering me X and Y, what will you offer?".
This can be repeated several times before equilibrium is reached and you're paying £[bugger all] for [lots].
Yeah, I can do the same thing. Only they'll all tell me $40 for their cheapest plan.
What about pay-as-you-go? I've used those my whole life until a tariff appeared that basically gave me unlimited data plus free calls.
I fall between usage on the amount of minutes I use a month where it would more or less come out as a wash. Maybe save 40 bucks/year which doesn't seem like it's worth the hassle and cost of an unsubsidized handset. Plus I still wouldn't be that much cheaper since I want to get data as well. Being on a contract doesn't bug me, just the usurious amounts that they charge.
