It's odd how a jewish mother is world renowned for her ability to guilt.
But in the catholic religion, we've built an entire faith structure on the concept of being guilty. We don't need a figure reminding us to be so, we're just naturally guilty.
It is truly the greatest divide between the two faiths.
The way I see it, Catholics have guilt built in as something everybody has. You have original sin. You have confession. You have theology to deal with guilt (Jesus washes away sin, if I'm not misinterpreted.) In a way, it's acknowledged that you're going to sin, because people are faulty beings.
I have the sense that in Judaism a sin is something you're just not expected to do in the first place. You're expected to be up to the task. Even though, honestly, I can't imagine how I would take Saturdays off from schoolwork, and I have no idea how I'd manage helping the hungry, and there's no way I can really manage all the rituals, the assumption is that a normal decent person could. Normally I like that attitude, but it's daunting. It's a different kind of guilt.
I mean if God's up there, and me being a basically good person isn't enough to get me into heaven, well, fuck it. I've spent my life preparing for eternal torment anyways.

Honestly, I agree with Shoe. I'm going to be a good person. If there is a God, I'm not going to devote my life to satisfying his reckless need for attention.
I got in a massive debate with my girlfriend who was brought up Catholic but totally became disillusioned by the time she was like 10
essentially she now hates the idea of all religion because she thinks they're all essentially Catholicism
I tried to tell her that not every religion has crazy-guilt and the promise of eternal damnation and I think I got through to her but goddamn she holds a grudge

you are mistaken
you catholics are taught, raised, brought up to be guilty
but us? it comes naturally to us. it is in our jewblood
and Yum Kippur? that's basically a holiday that's saying
"hey jews, remember all those days a year you felt guilty? well guess what, you weren't trying hard enough. Why must you always disappoint me"
so it's a day that makes us feel guilty about not feeling guilty even though we are
my god eh, can't live with him, can't live without him
I guess this is some wrath of god stuff
:^:
