WHAT IS THIS?!The Wizard of Oz: Follow the Yellow Brick Road is a Nintendo DS RPG set to one of the greatest stories ever told on Broadway, in Theaters, and in storybooks from the 1940s. Originally released in Japan as Riz-Zoawd - (Wizard Oz anyone?) You do everything by the touch screen on the DS from running around the world to battling suspicious flying monkeys! Your entourage is a mix of some zany far-out characters as if dreamed up by some acid induced maniac of pure genius. Not to mention the battles follow something like that of the Dragon Quest series. Maybe battles like that aren't your thing, but still, maybe you're also an idiot. Just saying.
Further, remember all those times you played the big arcade golf games? That little white ball you had to use to swing and hit the ball. YOU USE THAT TO MOVE! you swipe your stylus across those arcade golf game track balls (does that make sense) to move. Fun right? (At least original?)
Arcade Golf Games? What do you mean?
This trailer could help explain it. Keep in mind, the ball is not magical, this is only a demo. Stylus is required.
I just saw a bunch of strange characters and a girl and some green head? WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?
Unless you've been living in a cave all your life, or communist Russia/Ukraine/China/Korea/Canada, you would know who these characters are. Please see the Spoiler below for the cast of characters:
From Left to Right:
The Ferocious Lion: with a cute little butterfly on his nose. He's in search of Courage!
Dorothy: The Protagonist of our story. She's not in Kansas anymore. She was brought to Oz by a big tornado. She is in search of a method to travel back to Kansas to be with her evil auntie.
Toto: Dorothy's childhood pet from Kansas that wound up in the world of Oz with her.
The Mad Logger: or Tin Man as many of us know from our childhood. He's pretty beefy, and all he needs to be whole is some oil and a big disgusting heart.
Strawman: the scarecrow character is as dumb as can be, but he hopes the magical wizard of oz will give him a brain.
And that giant head at the end of the trailer, that's the man himself, the Wizard of Oz!
I'm Interested. However, why should I buy this?
Only because you'd be a fool not to. All the cool kids will be reveling in their childhood fantasies of becoming an adolescent girl and being taken to a far-off world of magic, all on the journey to get back home. Don't take my word for it: check out these trailers and gameplay videos and decide for yourself!
In short, you should buy this game. It releases this week and it looks amazing, if anything unique. It takes a childhood memory and spins it on it's head to be fantastical.

I agree. I totally thought the game in question was going to be about alien abductions, being thrown into Hell, or a Silent Hill pseudoworld rather than the blatantly obvious title that anyone not living in a cave all their life would think of.

Also, the main webpage: http://www.d3p.co.jp/riz/
It has a lot more info.
What's great, is the soundtrack and the entire cast of characters.
Apparently, the story:
I can't wait personally.

You'd think so, but when I posted that the thread was 3-4 pages deep without a single response. It wasn't even attracting the interest of sarcastic little mouth-breathing e-tards.
So I had him fix it for you. You can thank me later when you're done nerd-raging.
And that the main theme was inspired by both the original Wizard of Oz movie and the play, Wicked.

Anyway, I hate that gamestop ships things the day they are released. BOO HISS. Will have to get it on my way back to Columbus from the Toledo Zoo tomorrow.

Shining Force 2, Super Mario RPG, NES and SNES Zelda, Secret of Mana, Paper Mario, Sonic RPG for DS (I'm almost finished with this), Chrono Trigger DS, and the just purchased Kingdom Hearts DS.
So yeah, it will be awhile before I get to Wizard of Oz. Hopefully the price is down to 20 bucks by the time I get around to it.
Stalk.
That said, I will give my first impression of this tomorrow evening.

EDIT: Fabian's is good right?
Gameplay:
Gameplay is VERY simple here. The one thing you'll notice is that everything is super cheap, and for good reason, you RARELY get coins. Sometimes, after battling a monster, a coin will appear on the ground for you to scoop up. Most of the time, you're relying on coins just laying around and at the end of a stage. The game is divided, so far I believe, into the four sections of OZ each covering it's own season and having its own witch. I'm not yet through Spring, but over-all, I'm pleased with the music and graphics, and the battles, while turn based, are a little clever. The world however, all the stages are very linear. You come to a fork, there is always a marker sign. You explore one way, if it leads to a dead-end of treasure chest, you mark that sign with an X. If it leads to something interesting, you can mark it with something else like a '?' or a '!'. I usually use a solid circle and x mostly because a lot of the paths either continue on or take you to a dead end with a chest.
Sometimes though, you might find something you don't know what to do with. Later, when you get your first spirit, it will make sense.
Battle:
You have one round of combat consisting of 4 turns. Each character has a certain ratio of turns they can use up. Dorothy and Strawman - 1 ration ; Lion - 2 ; Tin-Man - 3. This means, Dorothy or Strawman can both attack 4 times, or be split up for any combination of the 4 turns. Lion can go twice or, you can have Lion, Dorothy, Strawman combo, and so forth. That said, you pick all your combat selections before the round begins. If someone is at half-health, it's wise by turn 3 to have someone use a potion or have Dorothy cast heal on the injured. Usually, that person will get hit a few times so by turn three it makes it worth it.
As far as monster weaknesses, all monsters have a type. Shell, Water, Plant, Ghost, and Normal. Each character is strong against one monster type. Battles are simple, and exp. is somewhat easy to come by, but you'll need lots of levels because equipment is something you'll scarcely be upgrading.
Skills are learned from one of three Dragon Fathers. I've beaten the first one three times by level 13, granting my characters the first three skills they get. Now if I try to fight him, he actually turns into a beastly dragon and wipes me out instantly. Oh, yeah, he can kill you. Never fear though, when you die, you get summoned back to Oz with all skills and exp and money you did have. So, you just have to treck through the map again. However, most monsters are easily passed. Further: Beware the black ghost.
Story:
So far, the story has been simple but kind of fun. Oz is being challenged by four witches over who is the ruler of Oz. The Winter Witch is the mother of the other 3 seasonal witches and leading them, but the first witch you meet is hardly evil. I imagine there will be some sort of plot twist. Also, you meet your three companions in the first 15 minutes of the game on the Yellow Brick Road.
Over-all, the game isn't everything I expected it to be, but the music and the battle system are refreshing. Battles might be simple, but there is a little tactical element to it. The game itself, over-all, does feel a little lack-luster and dull with the simple maps, and the way the stages are assigned. However, I guess I can forgive those transgressions because I just love the Wizard of Oz so much.

It may not have an incredibly deep gameplay system or anything like that, but I'm enjoying it very much.
