Blackberry Curve and mini USB

Just got a blackberry curve, and the good people at US Cellular tell me that the home chargers etc. that I had for my old flip phone won't work. They say that the mini-usb input for my blackberry has 5 pins, while my old phone has 4 pins. I tried plugging in my old phone to my new charger and I did indeed get a "could not charge" error message on my old phone. I had no idea that mini-USB came in different versions. How can I tell which is which? Is it actually a prong difference? Will I break my digital camera, blackberry or old phone if I plug a 4 prong cord into a 5 prong socket, or a 5 prong into a 4 socket?
