They're playing a show in Toronto, but it's the week of PAX East, which I'm running under the assumption that they'll also be playing. And that'd save me the cost of a plane ticket to see them twice in a week, so!

I've been trying to see The Protomen live for eight years. Since before Father of Death came out. And every single time, something has come up that kept me from being able to go.

    Until now.

It was incredible. K.I.L.R.O.Y. lowering the Mega Man helmet onto Panther. A sea of fans chanting "We have control. We keep you safe. We are your hope". Bringing out the arm cannon and launching into Hope Rides Alone for the encore. Plus a bunch of songs off of Act Three. It was everything I wanted to see.

A+ show, hopefully won't have to wait eight more years to see another one.

    I have a twitter.

I mean, four years isn't that bad really, for a short being done with practically No Budget. I think you guys are gonna really dig this shit out of this, the sets looked great in Real Life, I'm sure this thing will be even more Pretty. I mean, look at these quality robit parts!

The band is still fairly niche so they have to devote a lot of time to touring so heavily behind each album and releasing smaller or non-album projects to keep funds coming in and build hype and bring in new fans

If they just went through and did 3 albums in a few years and called it a day I think they'd have much less to show for it

That was my bad, I went looking for the pictures to post them here, saw it was March of 12 and went "oh it's only four? I thought it was longer somehow" and then only posted the follow up sentence to that.
Anyway, you guys are gonna love this thing.

Wex what did you do for this video?

Looking back on it, I feel like the answer should be "not much" but technically I was a PA while they were shooting in New York. I had never heard of the band before I said yes to a craigslist posting which I believe summed up the movie as "robots, explosions and eighties movies".
This is how I managed to spend a few hours casually chattin with these dudes, until one of them had to go leave to put on his helmet and be in the movie. That's when I first found out about KILLROY.

Saw them last night. Bass was way way wayyyyyy too high in the mix and washed everything out for about two thirds of the set

One new Gambler heavy song. The rest was the usual song and dance minus Turbolover, which kinda killed the Hounds for me.

They spelled my name wrong in the credits. As a result, I think I technically have more credits under WeX Majors than my Actual Name.
I'm also bummed they didn't ACTUALLY shoot the bike going through the window in any way. When they were filming that shot, I had to be in the back of that long hallway that you can barely see all the way to the left of the frame to make sure it was locked down and no one accidentally ruined the shot.

you know now that I think about it the two times I've seen them the bass was mixed pretty damn high too

    they should stop doing that!

I've seen them like five or six times now and yeah, they sound great in a venue where the monitors actually work right at replicating the sound in the pit. but god help you when they're given a sound system meant for chiptunes and other electronic bass-heavy music

reminiscing over the early protomen days with a MAGFest buddy of mine and man, I wish I were able to make more of their early live stuff because they seem like they were a much crazier and more interesting band in those days

this forum thread has a lot of that stuff in a pretty readable time capsule that will probably give us a substantial nostalgia wave

not that I particularly mind them being the band they are now, with a touch more perfectionism and a slow burn of content, but damn they were just banging out cool demos and such all over the place between Acts I and II, plus their live sets had a lot more shenanigans

I hope they get Act III out before hype fizzles because you can only hold a slow burn for so long before it's just ash

When I saw them live in B'ham it was pretty awesome. It was also a tiny ass bar.

Just a heads up, the Protomen are finally doing a show in Los Angeles, Tuesday May 30th at the Echoplex. The show is described as:
"Light Up The Night" Screening at 8pm followed by Q+A, full live performance, & meet & greet.

Hopefully this means they'll do some other west coast shows soon.

They're going to be at PAX East as well. I don't think the schedule for east has come out yet, but they're doing a show in NYC on March 8th, then a show in Boston on March 13th. So I'm fairly certain.

I bought 2 tickets for the NYC one but I'm not sure I can go.

Well, the Protomen newsletter emailed me about a vinyl release of The Cover Up

    no Act III news

I am sure their live sets are still almost identical to the last one I saw in 2017, I think all my Protomen hype might be dead

I got to see the Protomen live at a bar where I was maybe fifteen feet away from the stage way back in 09 or 10.

I don’t think I’ll be replicating that experience any time soon.

I've drifted away from the Protomen but I still have all their albums and still really enjoy all that music, when I feel like listening to it

Their cover album is really tremendous too

But boy they really don't care about producing new material these days, do they

I know this is going to sound like "my uncle who works at Nintendo" but I'm friends with a couple members of the band at this point and I'm aware that there have been a lot of setbacks and changes over the last few years, but they're still plugging away on that album

They have two new songs from it they debuted at live shows just last year, and they've been logging a lot of studio time (which isn't just me talking, they were posting stuff from the studio on their Instagram story pretty regularly before COVID hit)

It remains to be seen if it'll ever come out or be any good (though the tracks we have from it now indicate to me that it will be) but they absolutely haven't just been letting it sit

well in that case I'll take a breadcrumb of hope

I'm willing to deflate my expectations 'til proven otherwise since I think a few years back (especially after that 2015 MAGFest set) they were through the roof for a minute

What if we imprisoned GRRM and The Protomen together on that volcanic island in NZ?
