I thought five was a big step backwards from four, in terms of characters and story.

To be a big step backwards, four would have to have an interesting plot or characters in the first place. It doesn't. They're archetypes and unabashed cliches. This in itself is not a bad thing, it's still a fun game...

But it's really no more deep than Five. Five just took itself less seriously as a general thing while also having a ho-hum plot. Truthfully I'd say none of the Final Fantasies pre-7 have a plot worth remembering save 6, and that's almost entirely more an issue of 6 having excellent atmosphere than writing.

Five didn't even have the archetypes, it just had a bunch of characters with daddy issues.

I think we're getting offtrack. Of course the old games have melodrama. How the hell else are you supposed to convey emotion with tiny sprites and a few lines of text.

Thats a far cry from soap operaesque teen angst.

    .

Sure it does. Its a video game. Expecting much more than that means you are going to be disappointed 99.9% of the time. A video game from 1991, no less. Hell, for being cliches those character don't fare too poorly against modern video game heroes. It is literature? lolno. But most RPGs aren't PST.

now, granted it doesn't have that interesting of a plot, but it does have an interesting setting.

Replaying FFVI this weekend makes me truly look forward to the inevitable remake. I think Nomura's style looks great when it's tempered by Amano's concepts, Terra and Kefka look wonderful in Dissidia. I just hope when they do it that they use the FFVII/Dissida proportions instead of the bobble-heads of the FFIV remake.

Final Fantasy 5 did do something I wish more games would.
The reverse unwinnable fight. Persona 3 and 4 sorta had one at their end, but it was just set actions. FF5 let you kick the crap out of Exdeath with whatever you wanted for awhile.

There are no rats in FF1.
I was just trying to remember the lowest level monster you ever run into. In a lot of FFs, it's rats.

Maybe it was goblins or some shit. Point is, I missed way too many times to be just brushed off, so I quit that game forever.

Maybe I'll pick up Dawn of Souls at some point.

So last week, the day KH ds came out, my wife, knowing nothing about the release date on the ds game, decided she was going to hook up our ps2 and play Kingdom Hearts 2. This got as far as "where the hell are the cables for this thing?", which I ended up finding and setting everything up for her, normal aspect ratio on the widescreen hdtv and all. She got distracted in the meantime, though, by Tales of Monkey Island, and left me to stare at the screen as the neato english j-pop intro played. By the time it was over, I realized the controller was in my hands and GODDAMMIT, ROXAS, WHY ARE YOU SO AWESOME AND YET YOUR TOWN OF TWILIGHT IS SO SHITTY, and hey, where are these chests I am missing in the Jiminy Cricket's Constantly Flashing Journal?
Next thing I know, it's a week later, I've got KH DS but am unwilling to play it until I'm done with KH2 and I'm 40 hours in, at the final showdown, and the clothes Riku wore under his black robes are hella gay.
I'm trying to decide if it will be worth it in the end to level up my Drive forms (which, by the way, for reasons not explained anywhere in the game, do not level up the way everything else in the game does), go through hell and back to get all of the items I need to synth Save the Queen+, Save the King+, and the Ultima Weapon Keyblade, and eventually beat Sephiroth.
I leave it to you, G&T General Purpose Final Fantasy/Square Enix thread denizens. Should I just beat it and get on with my life or will I get much more satisfaction and enjoyment out of the game if I get as many of the little extras as I can before I finish it?

Also, attempting to go Master Form but ending up with Heartless Form 4 times in a row on Sa'i'x boss fight is some BULLSHIT.

Don't see why leveling up the drives would be of any use. Also you can defeat Sephiroth at a pretty low level as long as you play smart.

Eh, just finish it up and move on, I'd say.

    Also, 'Lazy Afternoons' is awesome.

Yeah, Driving in fights against the Organization is a terrible idea. Your chances of going Heartless are multiplied by an awful lot.
(I advise Master form Genie if you must use your Drive bar.)

I say Ultima Weapon, Sephiroth, then move on.

Man just finish KH2 and get into the DS one. I am enjoying it, but it's pretty basic-feeling compared to KH (I am a little less than halfway through). But people say it gets better the further you get into it until the end parts where you're just like "WHAT?!" so I'm looking forward to that.

I'd say it does require a working knowledge of the events of Chain of Memories, so read the plot on a wiki if you didn't get to play it yet. Actually if you still have CoM on PS2 at your store I may pay you a visit today, Phibbs.

Yeah I know. :P FF1 always starts out as a miss-fest but I don't remember being terribly put off by it. I expect to be weak at the start of games and needing to grind at least an hour. And I think that's what it takes, about an hour and some equipment in your hands and it's no longer much of a problem.

Sometimes I think about the Kingdom Hearts overarching plotline and I wonder how Nomura can find it in himself to publicly associate himself with it.

Anyway, my favourite story sequences in KHDS are the ones where we have three friends sitting on a clock tower eating ice-cream and shooting the breeze. Who cares for a plot where the twists and developments came from the bin of 'Ideas rejected as being too stupid for Final Fantasy games'.

Actually that is the part I hate the most. I am so tired of people sitting in dangerous places eating goddamn sea salt ice cream and getting things memorized.

Yes, I know it's salty and it's sweet, I've had that explained to me about five times now over the course of two games. Yes I get the symbolism of things that are bittersweet. Knock it off, you're being really heavy handed with your quaintness.

We do in fact still have RE: Chain of Memories in stock, I picked it up last week when I got KH DS, having nothing else in mind to use my $20 gift card on. Not even taken either out of the shrink wrap yet. I hope that it's not so direct a port that the worlds are endless hallways of rooms that look exactly the same.
More Namine is a good thing though. For some reason she is my favorite KH original character. I think it is the 'I don't get enough sleep' bags under her eyes.

Looks like I've got 2 for finishing and 1 for getting Ultima and Sephiroth. I might compromise and just get Ultima weapon. All I have left to get is the Orichalcum+ which are in set places around the game, except for the one where you have to get one of each synth item, and I only have 3 of those to get. Just gonna equip all of the Lucky Lucky pieces of equipment and abilities I have and go to town for a little bit.

Yeah. Heartless Angel is interruptable. You just have to be ready for it as soon as he teleports away. I can't remember if I superglided or not. But I know I used short jumps because if you jumped too far you would miss.

It is funny though. The Sephiroth fight in KH2 is the only one where I had to mix and match my skills. Because a lot of it just involves good timing, a lot of the buffs were more of a hindrance than a help. Like for maximum damage I would take off all of my plus combo stuff, since Sephiroth would teleport away after a certain number of hits it was best just to get the finisher as early as possible.

I think the Dragon's Den only opens after you beat Kefka. I definitely found it worth doing. Expect to get absolutely raped in the face by some of the bosses. I definitely needed to use strategy (as opposed to spamming blitzes and Ultima) to beat them and I think my characters were all level 60+ or so.

No new game plus, but in VIa it lets you continue the file and puts you at the last save point (which amusinly lets you farm infinite atma/ultima weapons via stealing from one of the end bosses parts)
