With Brink of Time you either like it or you don't. I dig it, but I was also in a jazz band so I'm a bit more used to the unorthodox structure that many of the songs use.
I wish we could hear more of XIII's soundtrack. Everything I've heard so far has been fucking fantastic, save the "theme" song, but those have been bland pretty much since they started doing them in every game.
Always feels obligatory for FFIX music discussions - fan lyric versions which actually aren't bad. That being said, I recommend not bothering with the videos.

Huh, on listening to it again, it does sound like midi (or soundfont). I didn't care to notice before now, I just enjoyed it. They did some really good post production on it, and effects like the acoustic guitar squeaks.
I'm just really sensitive to these things... most people can't tell a synth these days as synths have gotten so damn good, but because I use some myself when I mess around I actually recognise a lot of the sample banks he's using there. It's just programmed midi with some really great synth banks on them. Many naturally create sounds like guitar squeaks etc in the name of realism.
It's still a stunning arrangement, though.. it's just a shame none of it's live.
Re: Zip Slashers. I tend to fight them physically, unless they're one of the elemental kinds. Once you get their movements down, it's easy to block them (Blocking became way more useflu, due to the longer guard time, and Round Block), and it's so much fun to knock them down when they do that X charge thing.
Now, on the subject of music, I find it odd that FFVI was mentioned without showing:

Oi, Zonerunner. Check part two of Maria And Draco, hat-boy. It also has a rewritten ending.
Ralse yields, Draco wins Maria's hand, and an era of peace between East and West (apparently) begins.
I've heard good things about the Darkness and Starlight version, too though. I'll need to listen to it.
It does, but that version was rewritten by (the amazing) Arnie Roth. The TBM version's ending was written by Kitase and Uematsu, and the Distant Worlds version has been changed since that CD to match the TBM version. So if anything it's the official version.

True, but the main difference is the Impresario and the Chorus speaking, as well as Draco and Ralse shouting during their duel. The endings are essentially the same.
But I do concede that the Black Mages' version is the better one, with the added lines and all.
And holy crap, Draco sounds so awesome when he makes his entrance.
And is it just me, or does the music change just before the duel begins sound rather like Draco and Ralse did a transition into a boss fight? Their duel music even sounds like boss music.
About Birth By Sleep. Does anyone else think that Master Erauqs looks like Cyan? ... maybe it's just the moustache, but I keep thinking Cyan whenever I see him.

Most people say he looks like Sakaguchi. :P
Oh, I know that's who he's supposed to look like. He's basically the Squaresoft equivalent of Yen Sid.
That picture's been used in promotional material since GamesCom and press have access to high-res PSDs of it for magazines etc. That boxart was shown next to the Lightning Pink PS3 at TGS, though. It appeared to be placeholder, but the release of the high res art here makes it look more likely.
edit: Although I love pretty much every single one of them, and think they're universally better than the pop songs they've crammed into the post-FF7 games (I do have a soft spot for Eyes on Me, not sure why)

Awesome, I get to add to my collection of games with boxart featuring pink-haired girls on ponies.
Oh yes, Darkness and Starlight is freaking awesome, and it has a clever synonym for the usual name of the opera (and while I'm on on a Maser Erauqs tangent, I might as well mention that Draco looks to me like a cross between him and Squall)
Also, I much enjoy this thing here. It's not epic or beautiful, but it is very cool and quite sweet, too.
I don't normally like rap, but these guys do some great stuff with these soundtracks. Bonus points for throwing in the Cloud of Darkness and Zeromus battle themes, too.
EDIT: Going through the Secret Reports, everyone except Saix and Vexen refer to Xion as female. And even Saix starts referring to Xion as female by day 250+. What this means, though? *shrug*
I wouldn't say *everyone except Saix and Vexen*, since for one IIRC none of the CO team ever mention her in the reports, nor do Xaldin and Demyx. Not to mention not everyone knows it's a puppet in the first place, so, as the guide mentions it, they have no reason not to believe Roxas, even if they've never seen a face. Saix, Xemnas, and Vexen know from the get-go, Xigbar figures it out because he's been snooping around (again, from the guide), as Axel eventually does. Xemnas refers to it as a she because, as Xigbar hints, he's seeing someone specific in her, someone Xigbar knows and who would matter to Xemnas (which is why I mentioned Aqua, since Final Mix+ shows Xemnas knew her and Xigbar has seen him visiting the room with the armor).
Saix does come around, but only once Shion disobeys and he's forced to consider her as something else than a mere puppet. Until then he can't associate a personality to it and so it's a puppet to him.
Also, Xion was not *created* from Sora's memories, it's been created as an empty vessel, and then progressively filled with Sora's memories, just like one of the others has been filled with Riku's. It does mean its inital appearance must have been generic, and then we're back at the philosophical debate: did it actually physically alter with the memories or is Roxas just interpreting it based on his connection with Xion? Both the Ultimania guide and Xemnas simply say it's a puppet and different people see it differently, so I'll stick to that. There's never any indication that Roxas is "right" in seeing her the way he sees her, that his perception is the unclouded one and all the others are wrong. Instead they make a point of showing everybody sees Xion their own way.
As for the strong impression on Xigbar, in the report for day 117 he mentions there's a Ven-related thing in his past he cannot escape, says it's "impossible" for Ven to be in front of him and pulls his guns out, and can't stand his glare. That, to put it mildly, indicates they were not in good terms and for some reason it haunts Xigbar, and I'd even go as far as to hypothesize Braig had a hand in Ven's demise (along the lines of not-death-because-it's-a-kids-game-so-let-say-he-disappeared) and Xigbar is not comfortable with the fact, even as a soulless empty shell of his former self.
For the puppet body I stand by my earlier point. A female-looking puppet is not the same as an actual female.
So I guess we agree to disagree or something. Nomura's stated he doesn't plan on using Xion anymore anyway.

Yen sid doesn't (and isn't intended to) look like Disney though, it's originally just a nickname the animators gave him because the stare of disapproval he gives Mickey at the end looked just like the one Disney would use with his animators.
There is a character deliberately made to be a caricature of Disney but that was in comics, the Phantom Blot.

Its like a "mash" of all the good things
Also, please fix the spoiler tags - I was trying to avoid having something where people have to scroll past a bunch of videos. Pages like that suck.
A shame it's all midi, but still mindblowing.

Also Nobuo himself can be heard singing backing vocals in the second part during the duel! The only time he's ever sang.

That FF9 meledy was also real damn good. Sadly I'll have to wait to listen to the rest of the linked songs till I'm off of work.
