Well, to be fair, he isn't even named in Fantasia. Since it was an animator in-joke the name wasn't really known outside the company until there were books about Disney animation, and even then that limited the number of people who'd know. KH2 was the first mention of his name for people who aren't animation nuts.
Actually I think most people would know the name by know due to a combination of popcultural osmosis and that The Sorcerer's Apprentice is pretty popular all on its own.
I'm always blown away when I realize something is spelled backwards. Just yesterday I learned that Emeral Weapon's attack Aire Tam Storm isn't mistranlated gibberish, it's maTeriA storm.

Which also makes sense, as it does 1111 damage per materia equipped on a character. :winky:

Just picked up Dissidia since I saw it at Half-Price books for 20 bucks. I was surprised, as I wasn't really planning on getting it until it dropped to that price in stores.
So... Dissidia... I honestly have no idea what the fuck is going on in this game. I'm at the Cloud vs Sephiroth battle and can't get it because it's basically just numbers flashing around on the screen that I barely have any say in the outcome of. I really just don't understand this game at all...
Edit: Okay, so I beat it, but I really don't get why I did... This is the first character whose story I'm going through. Will this all start to make sense later or should I really be understanding things more by now?

All of the tutorials should have cleared things up?
All of the tutorials should have cleared things up?
Well, I mean I get stuff for the most part, but in battles it seems like things move so fast and stuff happens that I really just have no idea. Seems like there's some randomness involved. That and Sephiroth just appearing behind me and whacking me around for a while with me having no way to counter that I know of is odd. And it seems like 95% of every attack I do is blocked or dodged somehow, and I don't particularly get how blocking and dodging seem to work, since I can barely do them ever.

Yeesh, Cloud's story. I just finished that last night. Having to go through an entire scenario with Mopey McSadsack's dramatics wasn't exactly enthralling, but I was able to bulldoze through it thanks to the extra levels I gained due to playing on my special day. There's a reason Cloud's story is only one difficulty star, and it's the fact that he just smacks everybody around.
The learning curve for Dissidia isn't that steep, really. A couple of simple rules of thumb:
- Keep moving and dodging; that way you won't be an easy target. You can block incoming Brave attacks (NOT HP attacks - the ones that have names that pop up at the top of the screen whenever they're executed) with the right timing, especially projectile attacks, but until you get better just focus on dodging.
- Each character has their own unique style, strengths and weaknesses. Cloud, as I mentioned before, is an awesome close combat character; other characters might focus more on long-range combat, Bravery attacks, speed and maneuverability, and so on. Get to know which attacks and abilities work best for them by reading the descriptions on the Abilities screen, and work that into your strategy.
- Focus mostly on Brave attacks whenever you can, especially the ones with attributes like Chase and Wall Attack which can knock the opponent off-balance. Once the enemy's in Break status, then try to land an HP attack, since you'll have gotten the extra Brave boost.
- Equipment and accessories can really help, accessories in particular. The descriptions might seem confusing at first, but once you're more familiar with the mechanics and lingo, you can make the most of them. Start off with simple accessories that are active while you're on the ground or in midair, and when you're more experienced, experiment with the more exotic ones. You can use Rosetta Stone items to increase a character's accessory slots, but only for the character it's used on.
Also, later on you'll get some really useful abilities as well in the extra category. Things such as riposte are a must, because once you get a little competent with blocking your attacks can become devestating.
Guys, can we start putting these Youtubes behind spoilers just so we don't have to scroll past five of them every time there's a new post to see if someone posted some kind of discussion?

Thank you so much for that, I had absolutely no idea how to tell the difference between HP and Brave attacks! I assumed Brave attacks would be magical and hp physical, but that's not the case, now I can tell when to block! Thanks.
Is level 80 in FF1 on the PSP high enough to beat guys like Gilgamesh and Shinryu?
EDIT: The classes I'm using are Master, Red Wizard, White Wizard and Black Wizard.
EDIT2: I now have everyone at level 90. Everyone has 999hp except the Black Wizard who has 909hp. And everyone has 999mp except the Master who never had any.
I'm about to throw my PSP against a wall. This battle is stupid bullshit. It's like playing a 5 year old who just learned one completely awesome move and just spams it. How in fuck do I defend against Nightglow? It just throws me to the top of the damned arena and then I come down to do something, anything and right when I'm even close enough to do anything, BAM right back up I go.

First of all, calm down. I take it you're fighting Golbez? Is this Cecil's story, or something else? Golbez can be a real pain to fight against; a good general strategy would be to keep your distance and wait for an opportunity to get in close and hit hard after he whiffs an attack; other than that, try not to get too frustrated and prone to making mistakes.

Ha ha, every character has an attack like that. Terra with Meltdown and her Ice shard attack, The Emperor with Flare, Kuja with Flare Star and Ultima, etc. It gets real old dodging an attack over and over again, until you can finally get an attack in.
Re: Zip Slashers. I tend to fight them physically, unless they're one of the elemental kinds. Once you get their movements down, it's easy to block them (Blocking became way more useflu, due to the longer guard time, and Round Block), and it's so much fun to knock them down when they do that X charge thing.
Now, on the subject of music, I find it odd that FFVI was mentioned without showing:
At the Distant Worlds concert in Seattle this year, they did the opera number and had all three parts done by awesome singers. They actually *finished* the opera too, which I had never heard before. The guy who was playing Draco was great, a real grade A ham. It's really, really mindblowing that track started out as some MIDI for a random Japanese game. Such is the magic of the medium.
Then Nobuo came out again and joined the chorus for One Winged Angel. Everyone went ballistic.
OK, the Earth Chasm was way too easy. Plus monsters kept running away from me. I'll do the chasms and beat the final boss, but then I'm never touching this game again (maybe).
XoB inspired me a couple weeks ago, so this weekend I DL'd FF1 and am now playing through it. Just beat Lich, can't wait to change classes. Seems a hell of a lot easier as an adult. I must have just been terrible at resource management as a kid.

like i saw the broom thing but that was it
for that reason when i fought chernobog my only reaction was "what the hell is that?"

I wish Square still released albums this good. Pray and Love Will Grow are both fantastic.
And Uematsu needs to do another Phantasmagoria type album. Ame no Hi is still one of my favorite songs ever.
I didn't even watch Fantasia and I got the Yen Sid reference in like two minutes.
For shame, Rust.

Rap De Chocobo
Ultros Boogie
Battle With The Four Fiends
And some more serious things:

FFV's Ancient Library (everything in that one is just his own voice, including the "instruments")
FFVI:
Cyan
Sabin (rap):
Terra (he wrote it in English despite being Japanese and doing his other songs in Japanese)
