John K. got fired for basically wanting to make Ren & Stimpy on his own schedule, and ignoring Nickelodeon S&P. It shouldn't have been on Nickelodeon in the first place.
The strangest part about the show was that the restraint they had to have in order for it to be on Nickelodeon, and the creative ways they had to come up with to get some of the more off-color stuff passed, was what made it so great.

These two statements aren't mutually exclusive? It shouldn't have been on Nickelodeon, it wasn't a "kids" show. It was intended to be what SpikeTV ended up showing. But since the early 90's were still the doldrums for anyone over the age of 18 openly liking cartoons, they shoehorned it into Nickelodeon. It ended up being well drawn and well written for that reason. The animation on all the versions of it has been great, in my opinion at least, the writing just went to crap when they didn't have to be subtle any more.

So, the Earth Biography (Or whatever it's called) that comes packaged with Planet Earth on Blu-ray is probably the most frightening thing I've ever watched in that it actually explains the breadth of the possible consequences of global warming by looking at the Earth's past.

The new Left 4 Dead campaign is pretty fun, but that may just be because it's new. Each map is really long, since there are only 2.
