You're a female bounty hunter in a high tech robot suit. A research laboratory has been taken over by a parasitic alien infestation. You've been infected by the alien presence and now it's a race against time to find a cure and get to the bottom of things. Yes, I could only be talking about...
What? You thought I was going to say Metroid Fusion? Okay, Scurge: Hive does blatantly plagiarize it, but I guess we can forgive them since it's not like Metroid's plot is particularly original either (Alien anyone?).
Scurge: Hive is an Action/RPG for the GBA and DS. Same basic plot and gameplay as Metroid but with an isometric viewpoint like Landstalker.
Some points worth mentioning.
#1 - You're infected by the alien virus. In game terms this means you have a meter that starts at 1% and steadily goes up and starts to kill you if it reaches 100%. Luckily, each medical station (which double as save points) will heal you and reset the meter to 1%. Some people find it annoying, but I think it's a great idea - it keeps the game action packed and presents some interesting choices to the player (do I spend the time neccessary to clear this room of enemies or do I save time by trying to dodge them?). Plus as a side effect, it means save points are plentiful (always a good thing).
#2 - There's a rock/paper/scissor system in place with the enemies (energy/mechanical/biologic). Attack their weakpoints for massive damage! Plus taking advantage of weakpoints allows you to create chain reactions that can take out hordes of enemies simultaneously. However, if you use the wrong weapon, you'll make the enemy faster and stronger. Thankfully, weapon switching is a fast and easy proposition (hold the weapon switch button and then press the appropriate direction) since you'll be doing a lot of switching.
#3 - Well designed and fun bosses.
#4 - Plenty of upgrades to find including the ever popular tether rope/slingshot grappling hook.
#5 - Nice mix of exploration, puzzle solving, and action.
#6 - Multiple difficulties to unlock.
#7 - A rudimentary XP system (as far as I can tell it only affects your Max HP).
#8 - The DS & GBA version are essentially the same but the DS version has a map on the second screen (very useful thing for this sort of game) and costs more. Plan your purchase accordingly.
All in all, I'm finding Scurge: Hive to be a surprisingly fun game that has been sadly overshadowed by all the other games that came out this holiday season. Had it come out during the 16-bit era on the SNES or Genesis, I have no doubt it would be looked at as one of the classics of that time.

It's been done. I bought it, and from the 2 hours I've played of it, it was a good game. You can find it for $20. Normal price $30 for the DS, but I found it for $20. The GBA is always $20.
I like the main character's look also.
I might pick it up eventually, but I'm in no real hurry. It's got my attention though.
Figures this would show up as I finalize my MGS collection, and begin my Gamecube/Wii collections.
I need to find a job...
Probably the thing I disliked most was how floaty the aiming was and how much backtracking you had to do.
And yeah, the last boss was tedious x300.
