PAXers hit Las Vegas: June 2010.

edited April 2010 in PAX Archive
A bunch of us got really excited about this in IRC today, despite the fact that it's over a year away. We want to get a bunch of PAX people together for a weekend in the city of sin: Las Vegas. There will be drinking, swimming, consoles hooked up to hotel TVs, gambling, board games, shenanigans, and whatever else you want.

Obviously plans are very sketchy at the moment, but here's the idea:

1) We're thinking November. Not quite so hot, before the holiday season really sets in, etc.

2) We should definitely all stay in the same hotel. The qualifications for said hotel are: it has to be on the strip, and it has to have an awesome pool. The Mandalay Bay's pool isn't so much a pool as it is a water park/beach, so we're thinking that.

3) There's the possibility of getting a bunch of PAXers together to go in on a really ridiculous suite: if we split a suite like 10 ways, it's actually only like $50/night. And they're insanely posh.

No more Post-PAX depression... we'll invade Seattle in September, take a few months to recuperate, and then hit Vegas in November!

Arco, my friend... you're just fraught with good ideas eh? I guess the best cure for that is using a few of'em, huh?

Man, I'd be totally down. I'd plan on it if it gets that far :)

I'm in, even though it will be my final semester, but I'd be willing to "be sick" for awesome shenanigans.

EDIT: wait, why don't we just do this this year as well? Find a cheapy hotel (Hooters Hotel/Casino sends me stuff, I don't know how they got my address, but rooms start at $29) and we go have fun.

Wow, between Pax prime, Pax East, and this, my wallet would be getting ass raped.

Still, I'd be up for it.

Edit: But not this year. Too soon + no funds= :-(

Yeah, I can't do it this year. I'm still recovering from PAX. Stupid game store next to the room with the awesome games.

Doing it a year from now will give those who are interested ample time to plan, save, and get psyched. This is a little dangerous, though, as I'm already psyched. lol.

May not be as epic as the CCST...or would it?

I've been planning to go to Vegas in January for the Consumer Electronics Show, but I'm down for this too.

How long should the party last; a few days, or like a week?

I'm not sure people can afford a whole week, and imo, Vegas is really a "few day" experience. I'm thinking Friday-Sunday, PAX length.

Well, hmm. I'm looking at some pages and it seems that November isn't as warm as we had originally thought. Average day temperature is 67 - that's fabulous for November, especially if you come from some place cold, but it's not pool weather.

We may have to change the date to June (our second choice).

Double post, but this is too cool not to share:

    http://mandalaybay.com/accommodations/gcMediaSuite.aspx

2170 square feet. To give you an idea, the Billiards Lounge at the Taphouse where we held the Post-PAX Party Dinner was 2000 square feet, and we had 100 people in there (it was crowded with 100). 65" plasma TV, lots of seating and tables for board/card games, an amazing view of the beach and the strip...

$490/night. How cool would it be if everybody who went on this trip pitched in money, and we got this just to party in? If we get 50 people to go to Vegas, that's $10 each per day to have this killer room in which to play Rock Band/console games, board games, and hang out between our stints out in the city.

I'd pay $10 per day to game in a room like this. Holy crap.

That's probably for the party purposes, we may each still have to get our rooms for sleeping. But still, that would be amazing, and June would be great weather, hopefully.

    EDIT: As the page says:
    Guest capacity
    up to 4 / 25-35 (sleeping/seating)

EDIT2: So... I just went through the virtual tour of the room.

We're getting 50 people to go to Vegas. And we're getting this room. It must happen, that room is epic!

    I may be interested.

I should tell you that in January 2009 I stayed in a 750GR room (junior suite) at the Mandalay Bay which
I thought was a really nice room. The view at night was fantastic.

Here are pics of my room and my view.

The bathroom was my favorite part of the room. There are two entrances, one on each side of the
jacuzzi tub and a TV in the mirror.

I have a Players Club card with Mandalay Bay now too.

I guess if that's where everyone is staying, I can have a go at a non-free weekend in Vegas. heh

Yeah I'm in your boat s7arbuck. I'll be just months away from 21 haha. However, I did recently go to Las Vegas with some friends and my brothers and even though I was one of two who weren't 21, I had a blast. Totally worth it so don't let that stop you.

This is an awesome idea. I'd almost vote to change it to June though (the second choice). A lot of people would be on summer break from school and it would help financially (for me haha). March (East), June (Vegas), September (Prime), and then holidays (have to buy presents and games... so many game sales lol). There would be PAX related things every quarter of a year except holidays. I hope this really takes off!

Also when it comes to game selection to bring along to Vegas, there is nothing wrong with a little UFC 2009 Undisputed. It has the Mandalay Bay Casino in it. So we can beat each other up virtually in the very casino we're staying.

Also just need to throw this out, on 3rd and Tropicina... the Pinball Hall of Fame... it's heavenly like.
