Okay, so I just got a Xbox 360 for christmas (along with alot other people), so I've got a few questions about it.
Here are the games I got so far:
Call of Duty 3
Dead or Alive 4
Gears of War
Project Gotham Racing 3
I looked through a few online stores, but nothing really caught my eye. I've been contemplating about Oblivion, GRAW, Rainbow 6 Vegas and Viva Pinata; but I'm not sure if any of them are worth putting down 60 dollars for.
And I don't know if I should just wait for GRAW 2.
I've also never owned a Xbox, only a PS2, so I'm wondering if I should pick up some Xbox games to play on the 360, since they are now cheaper with the advent of the 360.
I'm just worried about backward compatibility issues, I heard the issues are really really crappy and pointless to try, what do you guys think? And if the issues are alright, what should I pick up? I never really bothered to explore the Xbox catalogue.
One more thing (sorry if I'm beginning to sound tiresome), but is the wireless internet adapter worth it? It's about 129 dollars here, and all I have is this really long ethernet cable that's looking horrible (though working arguably fine, arguably meaning I can get into a game if I try hard enough).
Does the adapter help out with the connection?
Thanks in advance.
EDITed on time synched to page 3 : I've only got 60 bucks right now, which means only one game to tide me over on 2007 and new years eve, which game will it be?

edit- pick yourself up a 1200 gamerpoint card and buy Geo Wars and other arcade games you like.

Since you mentioned connection problems, you should try forwarding the following ports on your router:
UDP 88
TCP 3074
UDP 3074
A wireless adapter wouldn't make your connection any better.
Check your NAT status in the network status area of the dashboard, it should be "open".
Here's an excellent guide for doing this:

Thanks for the heads up, it'll be something I'll try very soon.
Edit: Looks like the web page didn't help much, I'm using a motorola router.
As for the games you mentioned...
Oblivion - This is a must play. Not everyone is going to like it but everyone should try it.
GRAW - Good and all but R6V is better.
R6Vegas - This is THE tactical shooter right now. If you liked previous R6 games you should love this one because it improved on just about everything.
Viva Pinata - My personal game of the year but it really isn't for everyone. The upside is it only costs $50 normally and some places have had it on sale for $40 recently.
BC issues mostly revolve around the fact that only 300 some odd games work are BC. Ninja Gaiden and a few others had bad original BC but have been patched and play fine now. If you haven't played Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction do yourself a favor and pick that up. Honest to god it is one of the most fun games I have ever played. If Crackdown is half as good as that game it will be amazing.
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is another amazing Xbox1 game if you didnt play it on PS2.
Dead Rising is one of the best 360 games out and Lost Planet comes out on Jan 12th and that looks to be another AAA title. You should check out Live Arcade too as Geometry Wars is beyond addictive and there is some other good stuff on there.
As for 360 games, you must play Dead Rising. There's a demo on 360Live, I believe. In my opinion, R6:Vegas is superior to Gears of War, but that's just me. As for racing titles, I would have gotten Burnout 4 or Full Auto instead of PGR3, but again that's just me.
I have Oblivion on the 360 and it delivers exactly what it promises, but it's more fun on the PC because of the mods. My biggest gripe about Oblivion is that monsters level up as you do, and that's sort of antithetical to leveling itself. On PC you can download a mod to fix this; on 360, you just have to appreciate the original experience.
That webpage just had general guidelines on port forwarding, such as how to assign a static IP for your xbox.
If you're unsure how actually configure your motorola router, this page should help
http://www.portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/XboxLive360/XboxLive360index.htm
and look for your motorola router, or a similar model.
Get a warranty. Don't live life onthe edge like me.
I bought mine under three months I think... can I still get the 1 year warranty?
3DS: 1650-8480-6786
Switch: SW-0653-8208-4705
What do you mean by "bought mine under three months"
Under 3 months after the launch, or under 3 months ago
If you bought it anytime after December 22, 2006, then congratulations.. you already have a 1 year warranty
http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12482/Microsoft-Extends-Xbox-360-Warranty-to-One-Year/
Edit: meant to say after december 27, 2005
Anyone with an xbox who is still under 1 year of ownership is given the 1 year warranty, as well as new customers
Thanks.
About the cooling products, I think the later xbox batches should be fine, manual says it can operate up to temperatures of 35 celsius, but then again, 360s have a bad rep with their cooling systems.
I meant as in O've had it for less than 3 months.
So I got it WAAAAAY after 12/27/05. That means I got a yera warranty already? Cool, that just made my day.
Also, get a headset if you haven't already. You can buy a $70 "Live bundle" that comes with the headset and a $50 Live subscription.
I've got a Pelican (I think) stand that has a fan that can be turned on or off. I got it to make sure that my cat doesn't tip over the 360, but the fan does keep it slightly cooler. It hasn't blown up my 360 yet.
Dead Rising (Some people call it overrated. I really don't see why, save for the text on SDTVs being nigh unreadable)
Gears of War (Of course)
Project Gotham Racing 3 (The second I get back home to my apartment, I think I'm going to start playing this game again. Such a good game if you like arcady racers[but not as arcady as ridge racer])
Oblivion (Since I didn't want to play it on the PC. Mods are alright, but laying back on the couch with 5.1 surround and a 30 inch HDTV sealed the deal)
Fight Night Round 3 (PUNCH! PUNCH! PUNCH! OH SHIT! If you have an HDTV, get this just to see the detail)
as for arcade games
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (Don't even question me, boy. You'll be playing it for hours and you'll thank me every second. It's only 5 bucks, too)
Assault Heros (Do you like upscrolling shumps? This is the best shump on the 360, and it has co op over live [if they would fix it. :P])
Uno (You have to have Uno just to have it. If you're planning on getting a Live Vision camera, Uno becomes your best friend ever)
I haven't been near my 360 in a week! Damned holidays. Now I can't remember all the arcade titles I love. Nooooooooooooooo
Depending on your personal gaming tastes, I would say Viva Pinata. Without a doubt it's probably my favorite game of the past year. It'll last you ages discovering everything, it's gorgeous as hell, and twisted fun.
Gears
PGR3
R6: Vegas
SC: Double Agent
Uno
I havent played PGR or SC yet, but the others have been awesome. I haven't heard much about Double Agent though so I bet its middle-of-the-pack.
Forsake, Warlock of Stonemaul
Dead Rising
Oblivion
Splinter Cell: Double Agent
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
Rainbow Six: Vegas
and if you can find it on the cheap, which I imagine you can,
that Criminal Minds game I just forgot the name of. Spooky fun.
I am also enjoying Need For Speed Hot Pursuit for $20
Games I recommend:
Geometry Wars
This is seriously the best game on the system. It only costs $5 and it's the reason I bought an Xbox.
Tony Hawk Project 8
If you are a fan of Tony Hawk games, this is a very good one.
Rainbow Six: Vegas
As others have said, this is a great single player and multiplayer game.
Dead Rising
Very fun, but if you don't have an HDTV I'd say get some of the other games first.
Oblivion (this is a very fun game; highly recommended)
Before you drop 60 bones on a game, check the Xbox Live marketplace for a demo. This can also be a good source of free entertainment if you don't feel like playing one of the games you have and want to try something new.
Things to stay away from:
Bullshit Xbox Live purchases such as themes and gamer pics. They tend to suck, but if you want to find out whether or not you like a gamerpic before you buy it, check here.
EDIT: The Condemned: Criminal Origins demo was pretty cool. I hear the game is short, but I've been meaning to pick it up considering it only costs $20 at a few stores I've been to.
I'M A TWITTER SHITTER
Forsake, Warlock of Stonemaul
It has tons of character and great animation. I recommend it, but if you're looking for a deep, complicated game, look elsewhere. If you have younger siblings or want a good game to play when you don't feel like thinking too hard but still want to have fun, this is the perfect game for you.
Marble Blast Ultra
Outpost Kaloki X
Wik: Fable of souls
Most of the big hits have been covered, also to look out for these since they should be cheap.
Table Tennis (budget price, great party game)
Kameo (Should be cheap now, a totally worthy adventure with co-op)
Condemned (Creepiest Manniquins in Videogame history)
I'm going to be controversial here, and say I really liked Perfect Dark 0. The game has some control issues, but some really fun MP modes, and a single player campaign which has some really surprising depth. It's a game where, if you enjoy it, there's a LOT to love, but if you don't like the core gameplay just ignore. Rent before you buy .
Didn't microsoft also announce that they'll replace any 360s made in 2005 also? So really any system bought to this day is under warranty.

I'd say it's well worth it at that price if you like that kind of game.
Would anyone who has played it like to offer up a quick review?
FRYING PAN OF DEATH
my brother has this game and hates it with a passion
We're brothers?? O_o

Where is it that cheap? I would be interested in it for that price, too.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Viva Pinata were it $60. With it being on sale now for $40 at Target... well, you know where I'm going with this.
Good call on your other games (except for CoD 3 -- I can't really talk about it, since I haven't played it). If you like tactical shooters, I imagine GRAW can be had for a pretty cheap price somewhere, by now, but I'd be more interested in R6, myself (I haven't played it, either, but I'm not as into GRAW as I thought I'd be).
If you're sticking to a budget, and only plan on picking up one or two more games, I would buy Viva Pinata, and wait for Lost Planet.
My friebd played it for 100 hours and hated every second of it. The graphics were like a high-resolution PS2 game, the voice acting was atrocious, and the battles had difficulty ranging from incredibly easy to pull your hair out difficult with absolutly no way to predict which it would be.
On the topic of accessories, I got a Wireless Headset for Christmas, and it's pretty much the coolest thing ever.
