So it's that magical time of the year again, where we talk about horror games.

There isn't much coming out this year. People will have to help me out with what to place in the OP.

Upcoming horror games:

The Grudge (Oct 27):
From wikipedia:
"Ju-on: The Grudge, known in Japan as Kyōfu Taikan: Juon (恐怖体感 呪怨, lit. Sensation of Fear: Curse Grudge?) is a graphic adventure video game developed for the Wii video game system. It is an adaptation of the Japanese horror film series Ju-on directed by Takashi Shimizu,[1] who also helmed the original films. The game was developed by feelplus and published in Japan by AQ Interactive on July 30, 2009. An October 27, 2009 release in North America by Xseed Games is planned, while the game's European port by Rising Star Games has only been slated as set for October."

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (November 03):
From wikipedia
"Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is an upcoming video game in the Silent Hill series. It is a reimagining of the first game in the franchise."

Fragile (Feb 16, 2010):
From Wikipedia
"Fragile: Farewell Ruins of the Moon[2] (フラジール ~さよなら月の廃墟~, Furajīru ~Sayonara Tsuki no Haikyo~?) is a role-playing video game for the Wii. It was developed by tri-Crescendo and the team at Namco responsible for PlayStation 2 RPGs Seven: Molmorth no Kiheitai and Venus & Braves, and published by Namco Bandai Games. The game was released in Japan on January 22, 2009. The game is to be published in North America by Xseed Games in the winter of 2009 and in Europe by Rising Star Games in the spring of 2010."

Horror games that came out this year:

Cursed Mountain
From Wikipedia:
"Cursed Mountain is a survival horror adventure video game for Wii developed by Sproing Interactive, in collaboration with, and published by Deep Silver Vienna. It was released on August 25, 2009 in North America. The game focuses on a mountaineer searching for his lost brother in the Himalayas."

The Path
From wikipedia:
"The Path is a 2009 horror personal computer game developed by Tale of Tales for the Microsoft Windows operating system and later made available for Mac OS X by TransGaming Technologies. It is inspired by several versions of the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, and by folklore tropes and conventions in general, but set in contemporary times. The original Windows version was released on March 18, 2009 in English and Dutch. The player can choose to control one of six different sisters, who are sent one-by-one on errands by their mother to see their sick grandmother. The player can choose whether to stay on the path or to wander, where wolves are lying in wait."

Is this the right spot to get upset about that wii vaporware "Sadness"? I saw it before I bought a wii and it was a huge factor in getting one (that and "Day of Crisis". Ugh).

I'll update pics and stuff once I get to a computer (this is via my phone) but man - that game had new monsters I wasn't familliar with, a unique story and a very cool sounding control scheme. It sounded like a brand new survival horror story and I was so ready for it.

I just bought a 55inch 1080 screen and surround sound system, and I live by myself in a heavily wooded area.

I'm going to play Condemned 2 starting at midnight soon and scare the shit out of myself.

    Apparantly not.

Also The Grudge is coming out this year, Dead Space: Extraction already did, Darkside Chronicles is on the horizon and, sometime, The Calling.
Wii seems to be the horror console right now.

That wii grudge game will probably be the game that makes me finally shell out for a wii. I read somewhere that it uses the wiimote accelerometers to detect if you jumped when a scary event happens. If you are a scardy-cat, it kills you outright. Awesome!

I haven't heard about the death, but it scores you based on that. Sounds like a horror-party-game.
There was a lot of downtime between events, and this is where it becomes essential to have friends with you, for there is a multiplayer element designed to make you hate your friends. Anyone within reach of a second remote can trigger instant scares, like bugs swarming the screen or sudden images of the Screaming Ghost Boy, simply by pressing one of the buttons or directions. Once one of these random scares is activated you have to wait at least 20 seconds before another one can be set off, so there's little danger of spamming.

Once you're done with your scenario (whether it's by completion or failure) you get assigned a score based on how scared you were and how far you progressed. All the way through the scenario the Wii Remote is recording how much you’re hand is shaking, and how much of a reaction you give when something makes you jump.

Oh, I guess I misunderstood the paraphrasing on wikipedia:
The game also features a mechanic that measures the Wii Remote's movements during gameplay, the result being that the more the player flinches, the worse their success rate becomes.
I thought success rate meant "how often you survive an encounter". My bad.

As a party game, I can see people mocking each other over their wuss-meter scores. And I'd definitely be counting the 20 seconds in my head after somebody used one of the effects on me.

I'm sad that Splatterhouse was delayed by so much. That game looks like it was made to be played around halloween. Pretty sure halloween was its original release date.

Nowadays you don't often see games where the whole point is running around fighting werewolves and vampires and frankensteins and swamp things. Nowadays its all about zombies and notzombies, and as much as I love them, I want to kill something else. This is one of the reasons I'm looking forward to the new Castlevania. There's bound to be a bunch of different monsters in that.

That would be cool. I need a dual shock version of 2. I have to wonder how they will handle the disc switch start, where one disc would give you claire, the other leon.

In FFVII, you just press the PlayStation button and hit switch to disc 2 or 3.

And Dino Crisis was freakier than RE. Mainly because zombies don't scare me, they be slow, so I only really got freaked out when Hunters and Lickers started showing up.

Dinosaurs? They're all fast or sufficiently huge.

Just picked up Burn Zombie Burn on the PSN last night, the is a pretty sweet game. I don't know if I'd call it a horror game, more like horror themed. It is cartoony and bright and feels like it needs the monster mash as background music.

So I figured I'd bump this thread since The Grudge for Wii comes out tomorrow. If you feel like spoiling some of the surprises, here's some gameplay footage from the 4th level.

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xa1izu_the-grudge-juon-wii_videogames

This looks incredible. I love the mirror's edge opening doors animation. And the overall atmosphere of suspense... Though I hear it's pretty easy, so none of the QTEs are particularly difficult, and the thoughtful ghosts scatter batteries for your flashlight everywhere. Still might be the most amazing single-player party game ever. Anybody planning to get this tomorrow?

The Grudge seems to play very similarly to Nanashi No Game, minus the whole meta-game part of playing the 8-bit RPG. I had a chance to play it a while ago, and I was really impressed with the way that game sustained the feeling of dread on such a low-end system for 3D graphics. Just the camera suddenly turning to look at a door as the sound of hurried footsteps break the eerie silence was enough to make me wish they'd translate the game. I also loved that level's environment: a normal looking apartment during the day in the middle of summer, with the interior artificially dark through the lack of working lights, and the mysteriously meticulous boarded up windows with rays of light trying to peek in at the edges. Man that game was creepy.

Aside from a shot stolen from Ringu 2 (hair coming round the corner), that Grudge video does look really rather good.
Liking the mannequins, and the flashlight battery mechanic.

I also wish Nanashi no Game had got an English-language release.
