undecided on whether or not I want the olympics here
it would be nice for the areas they want to put stadiums in, because it would spur development in areas that really need it (specifically the Tri-Taylor/West Loop and Washington Park areas)
but it will probably make the city broke and has potential to cause a lot of damage to public functions
and it'll be really fucking hard to get to work for two weeks
What is being built in Tri-Taylor/West Loop? There isn't much room out there with UIC and the medical district. I thought everything new was being built on the south-east shore.
they're holding stuff in the United Center and building a stadium for track and field events in Douglas Park

Huh. Didn't know that. I though the stadium was being built on the shore...or are they still doing the temporary one there?
there's going to be stuff on the southeast shore, in grant park, and on Northerly Island
there's plans for stuff being held in Lincoln Park and at north avenue beach too
but olympic stadium itself will be in Washington Park, right off of Garfield and King dr.
so either they're going to be doing a lot to improve that area or it's gonna be really easy for olympic patrons to buy some crack before they go into the events

A magician gives you a ring that, when worn, will let you see the world as it truly is.
However, the ring will never leave your finger, and you will be unable to ever describe to another living person what you see.

fyi if Wrigley field isn't up to specifications for olympic events then the olympics are its death certificate.
what? they aren't planning on holding any events there
ok, so you build a new stadium, presumably one that can have baseball
now you have three stadiums and two baseball teams
Chances are you aren't demolishing the brand new one
as of right now baseball and softball aren't even olympic sports
I guess regardless, wrigley field needs major improvements
The problem with Chicago is that a fuckton of property is going to be built for use of only a few weeks, then the Olympics end and, oh shit, we still have all this property and then property values go down.
This sucks for homeowners in Chicago.
Only plus side for me is that its projected that I'll be able to rent my place out for $25,000 a week.

This is a common problem with Olympic host cities, actually. So much so that one of the things the IOC wanted to see them do is prove how they were going to use these new facilities after the Olympics end.
I heard security would be federally funded at one billions dollars if the Olympics go to Chicago?
something'll have to be done. the CPD alone can't even keep guns out of the taste of chicago.

there was a story when the chicago bid first got really serious in a local paper saying the olympics could actually be a pretty big boon to cities downstate
It's like two giant webcams perpetually linking New York and London. So you could be walking by and look at it and see some dude in london looking at you and waving.

I don't remember exact details, I guess
They tried this with Atlanta, I don't really know how well it worked.
Like they had some soccer events in Birmingham and the rafting events outside of Chattanooga, stuff like that.
The weird thing was that a year before, throughout the entire region, they started putting up kilometer markers on the highways. Like we even got them in North Alabama even though there weren't any events up there.
Then, a year after the Olympics? They took them all down. Nice.

Also, I know the Atlanta Olympics are viewed as really bad but I grew up like 4 hours away and we even drove through Atlanta on our way to my grandperents' that year and my parents didn't want to go.

well I mean obviously events in Chicago wouldn't trickle down, but I guess they're saying that hotels might be booked and people will have to stay further out of Chicago, plus people flying in to areas around Chicago or driving in or whatever, or foreign tourists coming in and wanting to see some of the area away from the city or whatever

Well, Chicago does have actual like commuter rail and stuff. I could definitely see, say, Milwaukee getting a lot of hotel rooms booked.
I'm starting to hate people that live in Chicago. I guess that's part of the reason I really hope Chicago gets the Olympics, to spite those fucking assholes.
i hate you too geebs
not all people
just the assholes
am...am I an asshole Geebs?
Also, Rio won't get the Olympics because they are getting the World Cup in 2012 or 2014.
I'm pretty sure Chicago is going to get it.
The only benefit (besides me making mad money), is that the CTA will be more streamlined and improved.

our commuter rail system doesn't extend that far. you can take an Amtrak to Milwaukee, but that's not really different than any other city

I have a ridiculous pipedream of the olympics forcing the CTA to add a connecting ring line that makes it possible to transfer outside of the loop
but that won't happen

Huh, I thought it did. Well, still, having those things as options should help spread the wealth more effectively.
I guess I should have prefaced that with something I heard from partners in my firm. It wouldn't surprise me with the nicer hotels in Chicago because they know they'll be around in 9 years.
