now I love golf, I enjoy playing it and have a lot of respect for it as a sport
but it's got no business being an Olympic event
I don't understand your reasoning here.
What makes something have a business being an olympic event?
something being a sport doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be an Olympic event
for one thing, competitive golf relies heavily on the design of a golf course... you can't "standardise" the event as easily as you could, say, a soccer match, because while you could argue that a soccer pitch might use different grass and is left to the mercy of the weather, a soccer pitch is always exactly the same conditions for all players on the field at the same time, and the measurements for the pitch don't change from venue to venue
for golf, the game changes mightily depending on course design and course layout, and to choose one specific golf course as the "end all be all ULTIMATE GOLF MATCH-UP" doesn't seem particularly fair
course maintenance and course type changes as well, and you could say that you can create an "Olympic standard" golf course, but in that respect you're going to have to first sort out what "Olympic standard" even means
plus, since golf goes on all day because it has so many participants, weather and lighting conditions will change for each individual player as well... across 18 different holes in which specific weather conditions may be more advantageous or disadvantageous depending on the circumstances and course design
Mini-Golf can be indoors. Problem solved.
And may I suggest adding wac-a-mole as well.

What about the Marathon and the non-velodrome cycling?
there are apparently a whole lot of chicagoans (like, 47% of those polled) who do not want the olympics and considering how badly the preparations in Vancouver are going, I don't blame them.
What about the Marathon and the non-velodrome cycling?
Every marathon goes up different hills.
that's fair enough I guess, but at least all the marathoners are experiencing the same weather and track conditions at roughly the same time and they're just running
in golf you are talking about way too many hard-to-control variables that can yield totally different leaderboard results
even if the course is exactly the same, you're talking about a bunch of dudes playing at various times within an 8-hour timespan with changing weather and light for 18 holes
it basically means that every group of 4 is playing a totally different set of 18 holes each time
and that's fine for golf in and of itself, it's part of the game, that's fair enough, and that's why all the pro tours and tournaments play 4 rounds
but for the Olympics? I just don't see it as being feasible in a way that will make golfers AND the IOC happy

Heats for the 100 meters can be held over similar time spans and can have equally varying conditions. If you play a sport you need to accept that you cannot control your environment.
With football grounds can be good for scoring and good for defense.
It is similar to complaining that the home team has the ground on your side.
You just have to tell them to toughen up princess.

I don't think you're getting what I'm saying here
there are 18 distinct holes and only 4 people can play a hole at a time
if you're running, you're running on the same track, fine, and all at roughly the same time in weather conditions that are changing for all competitors on the run at the same time
but in golf you are moving through 18 distinctly different situations in weather conditions that are different for you for each one relative to what the flight before or after you is going to play
Last time I was in Chicago, my car got broken into 10 minutes after entering the city and parking.
So yeah, WOOOO CHICAGO!
what part of chicago?
Lincoln Park, right where they want to have some of the games.
The Chicago PD has a hot-line for car break-ins, which makes reporting your misfortune super easy!
Driving 3 hours back to Michigan with no side window in mid February? Not so nice.

Football is played over various days in various parts of the country during the Olympics and no one makes a fuss and there are only ever two teams on the court at the same time.

yeah and of those TWO teams, both of which are playing in the same conditions, ONE is declared the winner and ultimately, in the final, only TWO teams are left playing under the SAME conditions
in a flight of four in golf, one of those four is not declared the winner, the winner is declared across all the players in the game
Olympic golf could work if you did it like you do things like football or soccer
instead of scoring across all participants, declare a winner for each flight of four, and only those winners progress to the next round, etc etc until only 4 golfers are left playing in one flight of four for the finals

I'll watch it if they get the Hold 'em announcers from ESPN to narrate
you couldn't have them play the 18 holes just once, the scores would be too close and you'd have way too many ties, I mean that's why you have them play four rounds a tournament
and 72 holes per round just to eliminate 3 out of 4 players each time seems excessive

I honestly don't think Equestrian should be an Olympic event, either
but that's me

stupid, or stupid fun?
And lets be fair here. A lot of Olympic sports are stupid.

the facade of the arena will be a giant plywood alligator
I am so fucking in.
That's right, the good kind of football.
Not that Beckham crap.
you ever heard of Australian Rules Football?
now that is a sport that requires ridiculous levels of athleticism
I don't say that as someone who currently lives in Australia, or even someone who's dating an Australian Footy fan
I say this as someone who just plain likes watching sports
and I appreciate American football to an extent, but I don't have the same respect for it as I have for other similar sports
Listen. It's not really fair to compare anything with Australia.
You have Paul Hogan and Steve Irwin, boomerangs and the hats that fold up on one side. We get it, you guys win.

Gold medal in Gokarts right fucking here.

I accept that there will be variables
but in golf there are just TOO MANY variables
the future of Chicago is about to be decided on
woo
Satans..... hints.....
what part of chicago?
In Greece they built an artificial course for it so I think they can do a fair amount of controlling.

check this out
national pride survey was done across developed countries, Aussies rank #1, US ranks #11, Japan comes in last
I would love to know the polling methods and all that though
court?
Satans..... hints.....
eh, lincoln park is actually pretty nice and generally safe
you can get broken into anywhere in the city though
sucks that it happened to you

When was the last time it was contested? I seem to recall like 1912 or something.
that's true
