Though honestly I would say the conditions are part of the sport of golf. I would just have a normal 4 round tournament.
I wrote out a big post saying this a page or two ago and then decided I didn't want to be involved in this argument and didn't post it
but, yeah, half of the point of golf is playing around the conditions of the weather and the layout of the course. reading slopes, winds, the "speed" of the grass is all a major part of the game. it's not all about your ability to hit the ball.
d'you guys reckon it's a bigger deal for a country to win the World Cup or the Olympics?
The Olympic soccer medals are for under 18's not professional athletes.
Yeah, the World Cup is one of the biggest sporting events in the world by itself. It's actually an U-23 tournament (with 3 older players allowed per team) and professionals are allowed.

how did I not know that, that is something I should already know
okay for swimming then... the FINA WCS or the Olympics?
Olympics.
I would say the only summer events where the Olympics isn't the biggest competition for that sport are basketball (NBA is more prestigious), soccer, and tennis.
At least here in the states you almost never hear about athletics, swimming, etc. unless there's a big personality (like Phelps and Bolt get some coverage) between Olympics.

well the NBA isn't comparable because it doesn't play by country, so I would rule that out
I mean I know they get athletes from everywhere but they're not playing to represent their respective nations
soccer has the world cup
and I guess I can understand the tennis comparison but even then it's not like they emphasize the idea of playing for your country
I mean golf has the Ryder Cup, which isn't EXACTLY that but god I do love watching it... it'd be pretty cool if they made Olympic Golf amateurs-only with up to three players per country

Davis Cup.
yeah that's true
I reckon a lot of tennis players out there would place the Davis Cup over the Olympics in terms of prestige

Yes, but how many people really care about International basketball?
In the US we only care because we're expected to get first place every year.
Also, basketball's international governing body is basically kowtowing to the NBA these days (i.e., adopting more of the NBA's rules and scrapping the trapezoidal lane).
if they did olympic golf in the style of the ryder cup, it'd be pretty cool, I think
just split it up more by countries and what not
yeah teams by country would be pretty fun
hell or even mix it in with some Pro-Am action
two pros and two amateurs per country playing Ryder-Cup style
yeah, see, the thing that makes the ryder cup and pro-ams more fun to watch than standard tournaments is the way dudes interact with each other on the course
it's like it's less serious and more intense at the same time? I don't know if that makes sense

well really you could ask the same question about most of the other Olympic sports, too
I mean shit are you going to sit there and tell me you give a tinker's damn about international curling
I don't know if you can compare the prestige of winning the NBA with the prestige of winning the Olympics, they're just way too different... like I said the US has good reach for international players but that doesn't mean they don't get good games against teams from countries they've never recruited from, y'know?

I love watching the Ryder Cup and the Pro-Ams. You can always pick out the amateurs who are nervous as fuck from the amateurs who are all I DESERVE TO BE HERE and watch them get put in their place as a guy thrice their age out-drives them.
And just following the scores in the Ryder Cup is so much fun.
You're right about the seriousness vs the intensity... the alternating hit really adds this level of intensity because you're putting so much faith in your partner and if they fuck up you have to make it up or if you fuck up they have to make it up but you get the sense that they're all just having a good time and not freaking out about it at all and it's AWESOME

Good points.
Also, I think curling was made up by Scotland in the mid-90's to win medals at the Winter games. One of my friends here claims to have played it before but I don't believe him.

Single elimination tournaments don't take very long.
You can have qualifying tournaments or whatever before the Games, and take the top 128 players.
Divide into groups 4, 32 groups.
Then you have 32 winners, bam, 8 groups. And so on.
I thought it was something like 1920 something but yeah something like that.

They just don't have much of a local level professional game as most of them play in France.

SO JEALOUS
my family's nuts about golf, I would've loved to get free passes to see one of the majors

The olympics is a u-23 tournament, with 3 rosters spots allowed for senior(players older than 23).
the world cup is the biggest sporting event in the world.
edit: If only I wouldn't of taken the time to type out each h
A better question would be if it's bigger to get more medals total at the olympics, or "win" them. Or the World Cup.
I still feel that goes to the World Cup, and easily. I mean, that might vary regional, but on the whole.
I guess another reason why golf wouldn't make for a good Olympic event is simply the fact that they have international championships every single year
where for other sports that have international professional tournaments, they only happen every other year or so
plus I mean it's like, hey Tiger Woods won the silver medal BUT HE'S STILL WORTH A BILLION DOLLARS IN WINNINGS ALONE

FINA meets are held alternating the Olympic meets for a reason.
They are considered equal in stature.

it is!
the yelling, the excitement, the brushing
get yourself a case of beer and sit down and watch some curling
it's fun as hell
moreso if you're at a sportsbar on yonge in Toronto and old people are yelling at the projector along with you
