Ok, back to the fight... give me a minute to come up with a flashback.
@ Dac Vin: yea, its confusing for me too. Im just trying to be captain and even the X count with simonwolf.
This has been absolutely fascinating, even if I only half understand how the mechanics work. I would definitely be interested in getting in on this next time.

Raccheam knew of the "good doctors" ministrations. After the last engagement, Mr. Sawyer was in a bad way. Run through the gut with a saber, there was not much to do but wait and die a slow, painful death. Reverend Broussard made a great show about tending to Sawyer and making his last moments in life peaceful, but everyone who should have known better, did nothing.
During dinner, Raccheam made his way to the Reverend's operating area and found Mr. Sawyer on the table trying to hold himself together. "We both know your dead, Sawyer, but Im sure you dont want to suffer the 'Padre' anymore." Sawyer begged for death, and with a quick flick of the wrist, Raccheam granted him a sailor's mercy. He wouldnt allow the Reverend to damn the crew to such a fate.

The Reverend has noticed that Facking Idjiot has tried to raise a pistol against him.
The Reverend doesn't like having pistols raised against him.
Standing to his feet, forgetting about Reed for now, the Reverend looks to the crew and, pointing at Facking Idjiot, laughs mockingly, before saying, "He promise you gold? More gold than in whole Carribbean! He Facking Idjiot!"
This crew might know of what the Reverend has done to some people - cabin boys and slaves, mostly - but they also know that he's a man who saves lives. He's a man who has given his all to keeping this crew alive and going in the face of adversity. He's a man who doesn't abandon them at the first sign of danger.
- - - - - - -
Twas 1700, the month of Octobre,
At the Western port of Martinique;
The motley crew of the good ship Dagger
Was trying to land their fleet.
When cannon roared from the fort,
The ship's side was blown apart
And poor Robert Harris lay on the deck
A wooden stake now through his heart.
The Reverend Broussard, he saw
The poor young Robert's plight
And he knew this was a terrible death
Slain in an unfair fight.
While cannon thundered in the air,
The Reverend ran 'cross the deck;
Where others fled and cried in tears
The Reverend stuck his neck.
Dragging Robert by the arms,
Blood pouring like through a sieze
The Reverend nearly could've died
But young Robert Harris would live.
"Facking Idjiot," the Reverend continues, his hand placed firmly on one of the pistols adorning his belt, "He promise gold? Whores? We have traitor on ship, we have Resolute coming after us, and he promise you leisure? You see why he called Facking Idjiot?"
He shakes his head and spits on the deck near Facking Idjiot's feet.
"You make me Captain," he continues, "I promise victory. I promise find traitor, kill traitor. I promise prepare battle, defeat Resolute. I promise... I promise immortality, for all! Do you want to live, be remembered forever? You want die, facking some pox-ridden whore, shot by King's men, you vote Facking Idjiot. You want immortality? Vote Reverend."
Yes, that is a bargain - if the Reverend is made captain, he promises to defeat the Resolute, find the traitor, and give each and every man aboard this ship immortality.
"Hah! Your promise rings hollow, 'Padre'. You promise to find and kill the traitor?! That's a matter-of-course. You promise immortality? I think you are delusional. If anything, I think your in league with the devil if you believe you can follow through on such a bargain! A wolf in sheep's clothing you are! 'Preaching' the Word in public but sending the dead and dying to your heathen master when you've had your fun with them!" Disgusted, Raccheam spat back at the Reverend to emphasis his point.

In league with the devil? This man's a bigger fool than anyone could have previously thought.
"You say, in league with devil for immortality," the Reverend says, before laughing again in a mocking manner and continuing, "How you get gold for all men, huh? Begging like good little priest? Working in port like honest man? Or killing and stealing from people, like facking pirate?"
The crew knew the Reverend was an honest man, who spoke an honest truth - everyone on this ship was a sinner, each with their own demons to bear. The devil already had a special place put aside for the crew of the Dagger, right next to Brimstone Jack. Anyone who thought they were going to heaven for murdering people and robbing them blind was... well, they're a facking idjiot.
"You, me, everyone on this ship! We all sinners, we all hated by God! We all already in league with devil, Facking Idjiot! My promise, immortality? Keep us away from God and Devil. Keep us away from their petty, unending revenges against what we do in life. Keep us away from eternal hellfire - something you want to hand us straight to, with your plans of impossible gold and pleasure for all men."
The Reverend turned his head back to the crowd of crew and addressed them, again.
"Like said before, Facking Idjiot wants to give you impossible treasure, wants to give you another week to live before get killed by Resolute and King's men. I want give you victory, and glory, and immortality! To be spoken of forever, to be remembered eternally! Facking Idjiot want you killed by Resolute while hunting for gold that doesn't exist! Facking Idjiot march you toward your graves in pursuit of impossible treasure! You want die in ditch, you follow Facking Idjiot. You want victory and eternal glory, you follow Reverend!"
Billy swayed in place for a moment - the words of the two men were jumbled, in his mind, but he understood immortality and money, for sure.
The cook was a traitor. There was another traitor on board.
He looked towards Raccheam, then the holy man. The former, promising wealth he couldn't give - and, more importantly, halting the process of discovering who else would deliver the ship to the British.
The cook's mate's dark eyes narrowed as they drifted down to Tom Reed, sputtering and pleading for his life on the deck of the Dagger. In spite of his hatred for the ship and it's crew, he had vowed to not see her overtaken, and he knew what would happen to him if she were to fall to such a fate.
Drawing his heavy pistol, Billy started towards the gunner and raised his weapon into the air.
Looks like three successes versus...zilch. Three x's for me!
Letting out a low, guttural sound, he brought down the handle of the gun on the back of Raccheam's head. If speaking a bunch of empty promises and nonsense while the crew itched for the cook's death was all he was going to do, he'd be better off splayed out than carrying on.
Okay! You got conked, Mr. Raccheam. Your choices are:
- Endure duress and make a roll for Xs,
- Bring the Fight to Billy Hammond,
- Both, but by not bringing it immediately, Billy's got a chance for more Xs, but then again, so do you.
Enduring duress here means getting whalloped, maybe bleeding, head trauma. If you fail that roll, it could mean you pass out. Bringing the Fight means you still get hurt, but you are RAGEHURT and want to fight.
FlowerEater, does this count as you agreeing to simonwolf's bargain?

The Reverend is a man who can keep his promises!
In all mechanical honesty, eight leisure per man is basically an impossible task, unless we spent every other day raiding places. And that'd hardly leave us in a position to survive the Resolute.
My basic plan is to sail for a fort where we can raid, repair, and the Reverend can start makin' his supernatural deals to get the ship's crew all immortal. Also, give us a chance to build up some X's so we can fight off the Resolute.
Sparks shoot out in Raccheam's eyes, from the blow. A sizable tingling shoots up and down the left side of his body, but outrage keeps Raccheam from passing out.
Soul 2,6,2,1,2,1 vs. Devil 4,1,1. 1vs0 Endure the pistol whip 262121
What would I roll to a pistol whip back at Billy?
I'd like to try and roll with the hit and spin it around to surprise Billy and use Ambition vs Brutality. If that is a no go, do I roll Devil vs. Ambition for it then?
Also, I have a plane to catch on saturday, Ill be out until probably late afternoon.

Alright, here we go.
The situation had degenerated way far off the point of no return. In one corner, a man promising immortality - a pipe dream at best, a clear impossibility at worst. On the other side, a man promising money he didn't have, but that he could get.
Even with promising the latter his support for captainship, the choice was obvious for Jean-Ferdinand. He lunged into the fray and tried to render Billy's skull concave with a good pistol whip...
Where'd you pull 6d6 from, Ben? Pretty sure your Soul is 5, not 6.
your right, simon. geez I need to get my game together... (of course, I did roll that at midnight where Im at)
should I re-roll or drop the last die, clept?

I think it'll probably end up bein' just dropping the last dice - it isn't like that extra dice pulled you an extra X or anything. But that's just my opinion, leave the final decision to summery.
I'm at a spoils promotional thing right now like two towns over (nerdy card game stuff), so I can post later once summery gets in and does a ruling on the current rolls.
Reed is dying, and unless any of you make a bargain to save him, he is dead.
BEN - to pistol whip Billy, that's going into Fight territory. If you can describe it as doing something dangerous or risky, sure - maybe put yourself at a disadvantage, severely. Don't worry about your action, worry about your intent.
You're really just trying to bring the Fight, trying to get away from further harassment, right? If so, bring the Fight to save yourself.
Dac Vin...
...you swing at Billy, but he's heard your clumsy steps, and he shoves you away.
Black watched the last of the fire go out of Tom Reed's eyes. All around him, men cried out for treasure or blood or eternal life. He knew he would have to walk a fine line--he had to back the Reverend for captain, lest he be delivered into depredations most vile, but he would also need to keep a close watch on him as he plotted his next move. If nothing else, to see the look on his face when he learned the extent of Black's treachery.
No matter. He had walked fine lines before.
aw snap here comes the flashback
As Black looked towards the horizon,
not a ship nor man in sight.
Maroon'd by man, forgotten by God,
his was a woeful plight.
He had no time to lay about
and plot his cruel revenge.
For night would come, and with it cold
As sharp as a saber's edge.
To gather wood, and make a fire,
and dry his sodden clothes:
he'd need to do all this, and more,
to survive in his repose.
As Percival Black looked up to God
his eyes were pale and haggard;
he swore to make it through this day
and live to seize the Dagger!
"My lot's in with the Reverend," Black rumbled. "Swing at each other all you want, but we'll vote like honest men. If it's gold you want, though, it's gold you'll get."
With control over the ship's accounts still safely in his hands, it couldn't be too hard to convince a few key men to vote his way... could it?
The unmitigated gall of being thumped from behind surged through Raccheam. Sure, he pulled a gun on the Reverend, but he didnt shoot the bloody bastard. Billy though...
Using what was readily at hand, and actually -in- his hand. A roll and a flip brought the pistol barrel singlehandedly into Raccheam's hand and the butt presented in a cruel makeshift club. Raccheam piroutted and rolled with Black's blow, and smashed him square in the jaw. Shock blossomed in Billy's eyes the moment he felt the pistol butt meet his face instead of a less massive barrel. The move was ballsy, ludicrous and completely foolhardy. Every fiber of his being screamed that he truly was the "facking idjiot" the Reverend kept calling him. But the flintlocks held, and his fingers did not slip the triggers.
"I'll settle with you later, 'Padre'. When your lackeys desert you and dont attack from behind like a damned yellow coward."
I guess since we both smacked each other its Fighting more than fighting now...
Also, wth man, we got poets? I cant compete with that literary prose....
It's still not Fighting until one of you says so, you gotta say, "I bring the Fight," but if you keep busting each other's skulls open, sooner or later that's going to be a deadly wound.
Everyone, I'll be out and about for today, so I won't be here much. Leave any questions or standing actions, and I'll get back to them. Let's also, everyone, no matter what you're doing, also make a vote for captain, even if it's for yourself.
And I imagine it's safe to assume Tom Reed is dead.

I don't know what to tell you, summery! There seems to be a big issue with player involvement, lately - I do not know whether to blame school, or just generalised apathy. My general habit is to try and let others post before I do, but... eh. Chalk it up to the players, honestly. Some people weren't as active as others, and it's problematic when that happens.
This is why I stick to three player games! And even that has inactives.

eh, I know. Perhaps I should be less ambitious. Especially, during school and whatnot. People just have shit to do! I think next, I'll try something that can run with 2 or 3 players, like you said.
sorry about that, guys - I told summery I'd be out at in a few different places over the weekend doing card game promotion, but I did think I'd have more Internet access than i did (all the wifi thingies were locked). Posting now from my iPod, if it's not declared dead I will respond tonight.
seriously though, I feel like I posted a fair bit despite having all kinds of school/job-search garbage fall in my lap the last week or so. but if I should have done better, tell me, I am newish to pbp rpgs and need to know for next time!
Nah! It's more that, the game requires lots of participation, and doesn't translate well to a play by post. You really need to hear peoples' responses between each other more so than I thought would impede on things. Not to mention that half of this game isn't appropriate to play on the forums, here, and we're really missing out by censoring it.
But thank you guys for playing what you did! I hope I made you all curious enough to try it out with your own groups.
