I've been inspired to try and get my old dark engine games running on my shiny new Vista laptop.
I managed to get Thief running pretty easily (set it to single-processor affinity, and it was fine), but Thief 2 and SS2 don't seem to want to play.
I hate it when I can't get my nostalgia fix.
Helloween, did you know you can shut down the security cameras by hacking the security computers when there isn't an alarm going on? Because you can.

I did not know that. I'll try it next time I can.
Might do a set today, might not. Work made me tired.
You know, as it turns out, Impossible difficulty isn't all THAT bad if you play Navy and follow a similar progression to Helloween's. The enemies themselves don't have oodles of health. I imagine a pure OSA run would be torture.
Course I'm only up to deck 4, I imagine it gets so much worse when I get to, say,
Well, I've been playing on easy difficulty, because I'm a pansy with scares, and the easy way to fix that is having 40 shotgun shells.
I just got to the Cargo Bays, and I've stopped to go hit the no-spider patch with a wrench. Whatever that area is that I was teleported to, it is fucking creepy
But... It's a video game. It's not real. Do agoraphobics get terrified by all the wide open space in Shadow of the Colossus? Would a cynophobic be unable to play Fable 2 because there's a dog constantly next to them?

Doubtful on the wide open space, since it's all contained on your TV, but the other could happen, according to how bad it is for them.
Spiders in games have pretty much always resulted in me closing the game, or if it's bird's eye view, zooming out until it's a tiny spot. I'm getting better, but some games still affect me, this being one of them
I get freaked out if I play games with wide open rooms in them, I can still play them but it is seriously unsettling for me and I prefer to get out of those rooms and into smaller rooms as fast as possible.
As an example for the wow players, there is a room under Icecrown citadel which freaked me out when I played WoW (the one leading to the nerubian area).

It's a phobia, it's not meant to be rational.

The best part is when the spiders jump on your head.
I don't know who designed that bit but they deserve an award for being a horrible person.

Yes, even a picture of a spider can scare the crap out of most arachnaphobes.
I know this from every thread ever where arachnaphobia is brought up and someone posts some images of scary-looking spiders. :winky:
And yes, it supposed to be scary, but only up to a certain point. Actually being terrified is not a nice feeling.
Seriously guys, saying "Well if you're an arachnofobe then screw you for ruining the game you're such a loser" is a pretty dickish thig to say.

EDIT: FINE, spoiler tags.
I find it ironic that people would play a sci-fi horror game which, as a genre, tends to have at least a couple varieties of giant spider. I also find it interesting that there were actually enough people like that to actually merit a patch to remove said spiders from the game. I mean, you're playing a scary game because it's scary, but you want parts taken out because it's too scary? Does not compute.
However, I have no inexplicable phobias I'm aware of so I have no right to judge. It would be kind of pointless to try and play a game which features a critter type which makes certain people psychologically unlikely to progress. Phobias aren't even a matter of creepy scares; they're something that some people just don't have the right wiring to handle like other people.
I now demand creepy pictures of invisible spiders. Bonus points if you find a way to make that non-unpossible.

Decided to give this a play again and I totally forgot how retarded the fire/use is when it comes to a mouse. I played for at least 45 minutes today, but only about 10 of that was actually playing the game. The rest was trying to get the idiot binds to work properly so I could move stuff in my inventory instead of trying to whack it with a wrench.

Go download the mod manager, one of its options fixes this. It's a really well known problem
Good show Helloween. It looks like you are starting to get the hang of this. Of course, now that camera beeping will haunt your dreams. I still jump a bit when I hear it.
Oh, and that monkey from above made me jump out of my chair.
LOL I love you going around the corner right after stating how well things are going. Talk about jinxing yourself.
I also like how the recording came on to tell you to go to the engine core, and right after that you walked into the tubes with the big arrow saying "ENGINE CORE", and of course you went the other direction
Two thumbs up for this LP, keep it up!

I just tried playing to see how far I would get in the game by just running past everything, never hacking to turn off security or damaging any enemies (on impossible). I almost got to the second loading screen in engineering before I got shot in the back by one of the laser turrets
I sure hope Helloween figures out to disable them by hacking security
Just as a heads up, you should probably be putting points into maintenance now, as you're at that point in the game where you'll really get into an ammo crunch if you have to shoot multiple times with terrible weapons. Unless you're willing to cheat, you should really build up the maintenance skill to a decent level before even using one maintenance tool (don't start using tools when your skill is at 1). Try to keep your weapons sort of near the green, which will save you ammo.
Remember, upgrade maintenance, not repair. Then start putting stuff in standard weapons skill and you'll be pretty much set.
ALSO, I must pre-empt this: Weapons modification. General consensus is that you do the first modify yourself and use the French-Epsteins on the second modification. Never use French-Epstein for your first modification. This may not make sense now, but it will later and you will be glad you filed this info.

Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=konbbnHHu94 - a pretty damn quick System Shock 2 speed run.
You'd think he'd have learned better by now due to numerous past experiences in other LP's. But it just doesn't seem to sink in.
Which is good news for us.
