I think Helloween's reaction to the SHODAN fight cutscene will be hilarious.

It does indeed actually. I was delighted to finally find a use for nearly every weapon with that on subsequent playthroughs.

It does unfortunately make the game crash even more than normal for me :(

Edit: Also, my first ever run of SS2 I did NOT get standard weapons 6. I got energy weapons 6. Do you know how much energy weapons suck on the second hardest difficulty? Believe me, that was painful.

If you conserve ammunition and weapons now (plus maint tools) you make the actually hard parts of SS2 later easy.
I'm going with saying this is boring again, why would you want to make the later parts easy? Most games increase in difficulty as they go on for good reason.

Get two laser pistols and energy weapons do fine even on impossible, well at least as far as I got (I got tired of trying to navigate the
    body of the many
and quit at that point). Remember that you must also prioritize your maintenance skill more than usual and that portable batteries are ammo.

Because it can be the difference between brutally bullshit and not, especially in the later parts of this game. Also, the game is still difficult enough, there is a reason impossible difficulty exists :P. I just completely and absolutely hate
    the body of the many
    for numerous reasons.

Oddly, that's where they suck most :P

    Also, I was using the

It makes a cool sound at least!

Eh you can take down a rumbler in 7 overcharged laser pistol shots (which seems to take about 7 seconds) so I didn't quit because it was too difficult at that point, I was just tired of trying to navigate that place. It was worth not having to worry about ammo and weapon degradation through the entire game in any case.

I remember saving ammo all through an entire Impossible playthrough. It was worth it in the end.
I snuck through all the teeth in the Body, got to the land of the Rumblers, and then went all out. It was like the entire game I'd been waiting and then suddenly I was constantly firing, shooting grenades, and killing everything.

Now I want to play again :(

This is exactly how I do it. The end of the game feels like you've gone totally space marine on their assess and the shit just got real.

And yeah, I want to play it again with the weapon rebalancing mod linked earlier. It really helps make all the various weapon/path choices feel more viable.

Okay, so I just finished the game now for the first time, having started on Friday.

I looked at no guides, helpful hints, spoilers, or anything other than the first page of posts here that pretty much all said "Go Navy" with no explanation as to why.

    Long thoughts:
Whoever made the "points in your sphincter" joke was spot-on. "Oh deary me, I don't know how to swing THIS particular club-like instrument, I need to research it first. Oh no, an assault rifle. Surely this operates in a far different manner than the pistol, shotgun, laser pistol, EMP rifle, grenade laare you fucking shitting me

Speaking of Research, what a waste of fucking time researching ... well, pretty much anything except the +% damage against target things.

Fuck toxins. After the first bullshit egg-hit that left me with one fucking poison point and a long trot around several floors/areas to find a Value-Rep that sold anti-toxin hypos, all the while watching that damned -1HP tick off my life like a WoW damage-over-time effect, I bought about fifty of the damned things. And then never needed them again. :x

But that's OK, because by end-game I had thousands of nanites. I bought so much AP pistol ammo at that last Value-Rep in the Body of the Many.

Speaking of, someone point me to what that thing calls its eye, because I'm going to rip it out and skullfuck it. What's that? You're used to spaceship corridors and lighting? Hey, here's a few dozen identical squishy tunnels with the same texture, dick-all for illumination, oh, and you don't have a map.

Regeneration is both awesome and game-breaking. That big irradiated pool in the Body? Swam right through it, tanking both drowning damage and rads. When I started to get low, I just popped a Psi hypo and filled up in a few seconds.

Speaking of - there has got to be an easier way to change Psi powers. Tab, click, click? Yeah, how about hotkeys? Ever heard of those?

    BUT
with all that shit that I'm bitching about it was still a totally awesome game that gave me a few good starts at times and now Bioshock seems totally lame :P

Doesn't Soma Transference work directly on the heartbrain-thing, bypassing the stars? I remember that being one of the workarounds in case you got the missing star bug.

Anyway, great update. I love how completely unprepared he is for each new enemy he encounters. And of course he already blew through most of his one working shotgun, so he'll be in trouble when he REALLY needs it.

Regarding laser pistols (with some major spoilers):
I'm playing on the second hardest difficulty and having a second laser pistol is a huge help. I breezed through the whole Hydroponics section with no problem because of strategic use of power stations and two laser pistols. My largest expenditure of solid ammo was against the eggs since I didn't feel like mucking about with getting poisoned or trying to kill the stupidly small worms.
Also, something that's a big help in general and I don't know if Helloween knows is that at least some of the sections which require a load for the next section have a small area right in front of them where you can put stuff and they'll go through to the next section. It's a big help when space is at a premium so you can move large quantities of items to easily-accessible areas without running all over the ship to grab something you saw an hour ago.

    And for chemicals
should we tell Helloween to move all the chemicals he comes across to that first chemistry room? I remember the first time I played the game how much I hated having to search multiple separate storerooms to research an item. I think we should tell him since it cuts down on running around immensely and it doesn't really spoil anything.

Did you pick up the chemical storeroom manifest logs? There is one in each chemical room, and it takes about two seconds to look through them and find the location of what you need. Plus, there are so many jars that it would take about two forevers to move them all to one room. And once they're all there, there would just be a massive pile of jars that would take ages to sort through to find what you want.

In other words, yes. Yes, we should tell him to move all the jars to one room. Laughs at Helloween's expense are what make his LPs so enjoyable.

Marine weapon choices are +2 standard weapons, +1 energy weapons and cyber affinity (free laser pistol) or +1 heavy weapons and cyber affinity (free grenade launcher+5 frag grenades). I think. Also you get a free maintenance tool if you choose maintenance (the free weapons start in a pretty bad condition). I'm guessing the disadvantage is that it's worth less cybernetic modules in total?

I'd think so. Would have to actually go through and find the starting prices for each stat you get for free during training to determine that. And even then, it's heavily dependent on what the player wants to do.

I have no problem with it. If you want an explanation, Ken Levine (I think?) made a post detailing that The Many's presence was filling the air with spores that broke down the metal in the guns. This is heavily paraphrased, as I couldn't find the post quickly; I believe it's on the strange bedfellows website.

Installing a mod that removes weapon degradation just seems wrong.

There was more than one occasion where I was furiously backpedaling down corridors with enemies bearing down on me, hearing that awful chunk "Weapon jammed", turning around, opening the inventory, repairing the thing while running at full speed, and turning back just in time to unload another couple rounds of buckshot into the enemies which were now right in my face.

You're telling me I should remove the chance of that happening?

    No way. :D

Also, having played and beaten this solo, I feel like I made the Right Choice. I'm also totally psyched about the idea of playing this with two or three other people in co-op, preferably using the mod that lets you set the difficulty in multiplayer.

Installing a mod that removes weapon degradation just seems wrong.

You don't need a mod to remove weapon degradation, the patch gives you that option.

What I didn't like about having it on is that the game already provides a lot of reasons for you not to use the guns you pick up. You might not meet the skill requirements, or the stat prerequisites. It might be out of ammunition. It might be ineffective against the enemies on your level. And then it might break. Great. It was tense a few times, but mostly I found it incredibly tedious and ended up wrenching my way through most of my first playthrough.

I have my degradation turned down to half, I think. Remember it's not an on/off thing, it's a number between 0.0 and 1.0

I always play with weapon degradation. It's not nearly as big a deal as people are making it out to be.

As for realism, it's not like the weapon is falling apart when it hits quality 1. 100 shots of very rough usage without any cleaning causing a weapon to jam does not seem that far fetched to me.

So as it turns out I also had spawns off, so even with that, and with degradation at half, I was running out of supplies on Impossible.

Aegeri tell me all your secrets I wanna be awesome at this game again.
