My little sister's friend and ex was 19 when he was on his way home in the middle of the day when some idiot trashed out of his mind crossed the double line and hit him head on. Craig was on a motorcycle and was killed instantly, less than a mile from his house. I don't care if the guy who did it is sad he killed him. He can rot in hell and drown in his crocodile tears for all I care.
The punishment for drunk driving should be personally apologizing to all the families in your community who have lost someone to drunk driving. Kill someone, and you're owned by their family for life.

not only should drunk drivers have to do time, they should also have to be tattooed for it like old timey criminals

Man.
That is awful.
What's even worse is a weak prosecutor who makes deals with these fuckwads because god forbid too many tourists get in trouble for doing this shit or they might stop coming and we won't get their money. So unfortunately this shit happens several times a summer. The prosecutor wanted to give this douche a plea deal! Luckily Craig's family is really well known in the community and his dad started a letter writing campaign to make this prosecutor take their job seriously and put this guy behind bars.
Goddamn, hearing about this really sucks. Words like "tragedy" and "unfair' are hardly sufficient, but that is really fucked up that he went out like that. Especially upon reading that he already had scars from being hit before. Ugh.
Einhander was just one of those people here that I always liked to see online. I went back and forth with him on at least a couple occasions. More than anything I remember he was pretty funny and was never afraid to throw in his 2 cents. He came off as being opinionated but also really insightful and intelligent, so I always liked seeing what he had to say.
Thank you Smoke Stacks for letting everyone know and condolences of course seeing as how you knew the guy on such a personal level. I had a friend who died in a car accident during my Freshman year of college and a few years ago had the misfortune of hearing that one of my best friends from junior high, who I hadn't heard from in some time, had since committed suicide. Either directly or indirectly I've known way too many people that have passed before their time and its a depressing thing to experience, so you have my sympathy.
I used to work in a courthouse, scanning old court files and case files and such in so they could transition to digital images and whatever. I can't tell you how many god damned DUI files I saw, and how many of them got complete shit for jailtime. It's insane. And taking their license away? They try. All that does is make it so they drive drunk while unlicensed.
Many states are trying to fix this by adding in caveats that if you don't take the breathalyzer test when they pull you over you get a much, much harsher punishment. And I know of a couple of states that make it so that if anyone dies due to drunk driving, the punishment is the same as murder.
I have a friend who drove really drunk, side swiped a parked BMW, and was forcefully pulled out of the driver seat by an undercover detective who was outside with his family and neighbors. He almost hit another car driving directly into traffic down a one way street, but he came to a full stop just in time and it happened to be right in front of the guys house. Anyway, due to this reckless display he had a breathalyzer installed in his car. He was still allowed to drive because of his job, but his car wouldn't start unless he was completely sober.
Also heard about this from a conversation had while I was bartending. Suffice to say, I heard a lot of DUI stories when I had that job. One person in particular that I knew had three DUIs. He was a cool enough guy but he was basically slapped on the wrist considering the amount of offenses he wracked up.

You can kill someone on a bike as well as with a car. A bike moving at 15-25 hours has enough force to twist a thick chromium pipe. What chance do your ribs have?

No cop in this city is going to breathalyse a biker unless you're obviously intoxicated.
Regardless, don't most major cities have drunk buses and shit? We have a bus here that goes from the Bottom (where a lot of bars are) and all the way up then back down the important drunk people streets

the chances of drunkenly killing someone on a bike are really absurdly low
if you're getting up to and maintaining balance at those speeds, you're fairly sober

You wouldn't want to bike to a bar a good distance from where you live. Planning ahead with other friends is always good though. I always try to avoid the "so who has had the least to drink?" scenario.
I liked the last place I lived because there was a great bar a couple blocks away and whoever I went out with would just park at my place and then we would all just walk down as a group.

Up until recently the only bar the town I live in had was out several miles in the country so not many (if any) people wanted to walk there. Of course it was just a little shitkicker country bar but a bar's a bar.
I am not very familiar with Einhander, but reading this has made me very touched. I am sad that these things happen. I'll probably be thinking about it all night.
This is why jesus invented taxis. People who kill other people when they are drunk driving should have their hands cut off.
In Omaha you can get free cab rides from bars on holidays like New Years Eve and Saint Patrick's Day. Its great that they do this but I wish they would expand on it. Allowing a couple hours or so for people to get free cab rides from bars after last call at any time during the year in major cities (and eventually elsewhere) would be great.
There are plenty of simple things like this that could prevent incidents and threads like this from popping up. Most of it would come down to hoping that people would actually use something like this if it were at their disposal of course, which isn't always the case unfortunately. I bet quite a few would though.

i didn't know Einhander too well, but my condolences to his friends and family.
and good lord, the DUI part makes me really freaking angry. it takes all of five minutes to figure out a carpool with a designated driver. five damn minutes. if you're going to get plastered, all it takes is a little planning so that everyone including random people on the street will have a good time for the evening.

WaM, enough damage is already done to society by these people. No need to hurt designers.
especially not the people looking at that dudes forehead

Because they'll fall into stuff and hurt themselves. Way worse than killing other people.

Tonight at 11: ten killed by apathy of others.
10 isn't many people.
If someone doesn't get this I will be upset.

We got free corn from them once.

Or a really good biker
Condolences to Ein's friends and family.
Only technically, though.

Just because you don't have a license doesn't mean you can't still put your handicapped drunken ass behind the wheel of a car.
I saw a guy on cops one time who was being chased and already had 14. He died in the ensuing police chase, all caught on camera.
as a designer, I am willing to make this sacrifice for the greater good
a big part of the point of this kind of thread is to share fond memories of the deceased
