Okay, I finished recording the first part of my VVVVVV Let's Play, after finagling things around in Windows 7 to record sound and video at the same time.
Then I went to edit it, and installing Windows 7 apparently uninstalls Windows Movie Maker. What's some good video editing software I could use?

You can download Windows Movie Maker Live for free.

My understanding is that it's a crippled version, though. I'm going to be needing multiple audio tracks. Will it still do that?
EDIT:
I guess I can just find out for myself instead of wasting time asking dumb questions.
Also, my IWBTG LP is gone forever because YouTube consists of bitches and they took my stuff down because some goose somewhere told them I was violating copyright or some nonsense.

Damn it josh, you can fight that shit you know. The copyright violation process on YouTube is automated up until you fight it. All it takes is a report of copyright violation for the auto system to kick in. When you file to fight it, actual people review the damn thing.
Problem is, I don't know where Lets Play videos fall in line with this. Is it Fair Use?
Just claim Fair Use. Your videos should be re-enabled.
Edit - I'll run a thread update tomorrow if I remember. Just ran some quick updates for WoW related stuff (not that its hard but it was enough to make me go "all done!" for the night).
What's a good video compressor? Mediacoder allows me to compress my AVIs into MP4, but I sort of just want smaller AVIs...can I do that? Cause the raw test files I've been doing are WHOAMG huge.
edit: Also having to switch between my XP partition and my Win 7 partition is hella annoying. Damn Capture Card without Win 7 drivers! I want to start LP work this weekend!
The old one let you have multiple audio tracks split from the video feed and was a lot more powerful. I'm going to need something else.
Oh I forgot, you can also download "Windows Movie Maker 2.6".
That works for Vista/Windows 7, I used that too.
Some might say 2.6 was shit as well. The one MS is pushing now, Windows Live Movie Maker removed the time line.
That's the entirety of the program!
Well, excuuuuuuuuse me for using Windows Movie Maker :P
Fine,if you want to,i'll do it like all the other "cool" LPers and write "I use Sony Vegas 9.0 for editing" into my channel thereby declaring to everyone that I like to use illegally obtained software.

... HAHAHAHA, what the fuck?
It didn't "really" remove the timeline. I mean,it did remove the timeline how it was in the old WMM but basically you can zoom in and out of the "scene" view and have it act like a timeline. It's not hard to use at all.

Hey, I'm not making any judgments. All I know is that I have no idea what I am doing with WMM. Apparently it dislikes overlaying MP3s as audio over videos. WAVs work fine, though.
Fuck it, I might just use Text To Speech like JoshOfAllTrades, except that it might seem completely weird coming out of a foul mouthed assassin. (Also, totally need to make sure I know how to edit out stuff because I get the feeling I can't do what some LPers do and just play straight through. Especially since I'd be going in blind. Because I get the feeling I won't want to play the game more than once.)

Not that I can't import MP3s. I just can't get them to actually play. Even when I mute the audio from the video entirely. I don't really mind, though. WAVs can't increase the file size by that much, can it?

They don't change the filesize at all since the audio is being encoded anyway.
I just went ahead and bought Pinnacle Studio. I've been using it for my last couple of videos and it works pretty well, except the video preview window is all kinds of janky and makes it really tough to watch what's going on. Only when it's playing though, if I scroll with my mouse it looks just fine.
I recommend getting decent software to anybody interested in doing LPs. It costs a little bit to do so, but in the end it's worth avoiding the fucking headache from testing out all the free shit that is shitty shit.

Yeah, I guess it's my fault for being cheap and getting an EasyCap with its outdated preloaded software. Apparently EasyCap is reliably decent, just not for a Win7 machine.

Aside from the thread content update I'm gonna run later, tonight I'm gonna start a series of PM'ing of people to get precise feedback on tools they use to get their LPs accomplished. I'm hoping to use this info to enhance the section for making LPs, but it'll also give me answers on hand to give to people since I tend to hawk over this thread.
PS, I have a job interview on Monday.

Man, I just had what is probably a really terrible idea. So we all love Deus Ex, right? And Deus Ex: Invisible War is the horrible bastard stepchild everyone loves to beat, right?
So how about an LP of Invisible War with the main character being a total moron? I mean stupid total moron. Then it halfway makes sense why all of his augs are broken and dumb and he uses one ammo type for everything. I dunno how tough it would be to cut out the original VA work and replace it with my own (or where the hell I came up with this awful idea), but I think it could actually make for an enjoyable LP of a game everyone otherwise hates.
It's also possible this is just a stupid, stupid idea, but I'm thinking of what to do for an LP next and somehow came up with this.

The pseudo-plan would be to play first, get most things recorded or at least get a feel for things, and then do the actual voiceover stuff during editing. I'm fairly certain trying to ad-lib everything would make things pretty awful. But there has to be some way to get some decent enjoyment out of Invisible War, right?
On the other hand, I might just do a Just Cause 2 LP instead or maybe even a Crysis LP.
EDIT: Um, wow. Just did a quick test recording for Crysis and got a solid 30 FPS off of everything on High settings at 1920x1080. I thought FRAPS might slow things down too much, but I might actually be able to do a Crysis LP which looks really good.

Crysis would be great if you could show all the intresting dicking about you can do in that game.

I finished Crysis immediately after I got my system up to full capacity (last year at some point), but I actually didn't like how limited the suit functions were. So just doing a little bit of goofing around while doing some test recording I found out that I still have some tweaks in place to take the suit from entertaining to pretty awesome. Not stupidly awesome, but far, far improved over the stock suit.
As in so awesome I can sprint fast enough to insta-kill myself by hitting a rock.

Crysis definitely has some issues. The suit abilities can be absolutely tedious to work with due to the stupidly low power supply and could often be underwhelming to the point of useless. However, I tweaked those to make them a lot more fun. Then there's the fact that attaching a suppressor to gun completely neuters it which is one of my top video game pet peeves; suppressors don't do shit to bullet velocity. Ever. If anything, they would give the bullet a very slight boost since the barrel is extended (though gasses are bled off by the suppressor so the gain is minimal). All this time and effort spent on so much detail and the game has suppressors which work completely contrary to reality.
Gripes aside, Crysis does some insanely neat stuff. The real-time weapon interface is great, tagging enemies through binoculars is neat, structures are very destructible, the areas are huge, and the scale of some of the fights get pretty insane. The AI can also be pretty damned smart, even frustratingly so.
I remember some dude being pissed and making a video of him comparing Modern Warfare to Crysis and having a lot of justifiable points about Modern Warfare being completely overblown. Crysis wasn't perfect, but it tried a lot of great ideas instead of rehashing an ancient campaign formula with a modern setting.
Didn't someone mention once how silencers and suppressors are only like that in media because people assume they are? And people need their expectations fulfilled?
I'm playing around in Adobe Premier now and I'm trying to find a good compromise between lossy video/audio and massive, nearly 2 Gig file sizes. Any ideas on how to export something that doesn't look like complete ass and isn't going to bend my hard drive over the nearest PCI slot and go to town?

Screw public perceptions, suppressors don't work that way. Fulfilling this expectation makes everyone dumber.
Really big pet peeve of mine.
You might want to try some tiny test files and see just how much you can compress the audio before the compression actually becomes noticeable. Audio compression should be less noticeable than video compression, though I'm pretty sure you'll need to have to put up with some loss on both ends if you don't want to spend ages and ages encoding.
Ugh. I can't delete them off my hard drive now or I know they'll get taken down from the web. I don't want these hogging my space from now till kingdom come.
In any case, this one will be a huge file, I guess. Any recommendations on compression programs?
