It Takes a Thief...

So this morning I find out that the three laptops that were taken out of my office last month were tracked via to the houses of one of my employees and her brother-in-law. The woman is 60+ years old and was suspended pending review (she'll be fired and prosecuted most likely). She refused to comment on the matter when queried and indicated that her attorney had advised her to say nothing. The only thing she did say was 'The truth will come out, I'm not a criminal'. It seemed like it was directed at me, like I have something to be worried about.

The only thing I was worried about is the lashing I took from my boss a month ago for being stupid enough to keep my office unlocked, but that's overwith.

Still, however, this woman has never liked me since I took over as her boss, she is a generally unpleasant person, and I'm just a little concerned that in her twisted mind she has somehow convinced herself that it was me that drove her to a life of crime, and now I have a nemesis. The real thing that worries me is her brother-in-law is a law enforcement employee and is now positively FUCKED for recieving stolen property. My IT guy and his boss are going to press charges as much as they can, and with corporate involved there really is no hope that these folks are going to get away with a slap on the wrist.

Not sure if I have a specific question, I kind of wanted to share the situation with the H/A crowd and see if anyone had any thoughts. I'm happy to provide more info, as best I can without compromising anonymity, for as my employee found out this weekend YOU ARE NOT ANONYMOUS.

Be confident in the fact that you have nothing to worry about.

She's 60. You're Nemesis will die before you do! :winky:

So a woman is redirecting guilt into anger at you?

Seems pretty standard, don't talk to her, record any instances of her trying to contact you if you're concerned that she'll become aggressive, and just let the courts do their job

Don't most criminals say stuff like that? The truth will come out? Whatever... she may as well have said "you'll rue the day!"

Just ignore it and get on with your life. Also, someone working in law enforcement (who I assume isn't a cop, since you didn't say cop) who is under investigation probably doesn't have a lot they can do to you.

Now that I think about it that's exactly what Blagovich said on the Daily Show two weeks ago.

    I'm starting to feel better.

If it's a cop, you really need to watch your fucking back. Like, seriously.

I'm not saying anyone is going to do anything, but you should be keeping an eye out. A cop willing to pull some shit like this is almost certainly willing to fuck with you or your company over being prosecuted for it.

And there's a good chance if he is a cop that he'll get off scott-free, or with a slap on the wrist at best. Make sure you've changed passwords (like, everyone's passwords), checked for extraneous accounts in any of your security measures (for instance, any extra Active Directory accounts that shouldn't be there), etc. Remember to double-check door codes and things like that, as well.

And thus ends that era. Thanks Thanatos.

Dude, it's Thanatos. If you mention cops to him he will go crazy and rant about them. Don't worry about it.

The corrections officer won't get off scott free, and neither will she. They won't break into your office, they won't haxor your comps. They'll go to court, probably take a plea agreement, and will never bother you or your company again.

Thanatos, you really shouldn't try to throw your paranoia onto other people.

I prefaced my post with "I'm not saying he'll do anything." In fact, even as a corrupt cop, he probably won't. I'm just saying you should keep your goddamn eyes open, and take some basic precautions.

And listen, changing passwords and double-checking Active Directory is something you do when any employee leaves on a sour note, not just one who happens to have a cop as a relative.

10-4, precautions. Note to self: shoot all cops on sight KK got it.

The guy is a corrections officer, I'm not sure if that qualifies as a real cop. The guy who is a real cop however is my IT guy who is charged with running these laptops down. I expect this merry band of thieves will be nailed to the wall.

I guess there is a part of me that still remembers my carefree pre-saturn return days as a drug dealer and all around petty criminal. So even though I am 100% guiltless in this or any other crime in the last 5 years, there is that part of me that spent time in institutions that is programed to think if there is crime going on around me I must be involved.

I'm not sure if that makes sense. Another carry over from those days is shit for short term memory, so even though I'm sure I did not say anything to the nature of 'Of course you can take 3 laptops from my office and give them to your loser relatives', it's just second nature for me to ask myself 'are you sure you didn't?'

These sound like my own insecurities and not something to worry about.

As a free man you have nothing to fear. Corrections officers and police don't party together all that often. The man likely has no better hookups with the real police than you do.

Yeah, a corrections officer isn't nearly as likely to walk away from something like this.

Other than the basic security steps I mentioned (and again, I would recommend those anytime someone leaves under less-than-optimal conditions), I wouldn't worry about it.

I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill, to be honest. Just because you're her boss and she doesn't really like you doesn't mean that you should begin fortifying your house and stocking up on ammunition. I sounds to me like you're letting your insecurities and/or anxieties run a little too freely.

You're not bringing the civil or criminal charges, your company is.

I encourage you to have zero contact with this woman at any time in the future. Print all emails you receive, save any voicemails, and don't answer calls from her number.
