This game was such a massive disappointment for me. I had heard it talked about quite a lot here and it was one of the first games I bought for my PS3 and man it let me down. It was horribly incoherent, with very short uninteresting levels with little exploration (albeit I will state I've only played the first 4 or so episodes) and I quickly lost interest. I think what did it in for me was the comparisons people made to Silent Hill, especially the older games in the series and so I had really high expectations. That always leads to trouble.
All the other games you listed though are pretty awesome. Especially Uncharted and its sequel.
1. I'm graduating in June and will probably be spending at least the next year or more in a different country/region of the world. When I found out that the ps3 is region free (as far as games), it instantly became about a thousand times more appealing. Does anyone know if the Slim version is also region-free?
Yeah I believe it is.
2. Price cut. Duh.
Very good reason and this is why I bought one. If you don't already have a blu-ray player and you have an HDTV, it's more than worth it for this reason alone. I am really enjoying the quality in Blu-ray movies.
3. Actual games I want to play, but can't. Uncharted 2 is the first "oh my lord I need this game" that's ps3 exclusive. Throw that in with the ratchet and clank series, god of war, Metal Gear, killzone... and suddenly it's looking a helluva lot meatier than it did before.
Yeah, I have Resistance, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Uncharted, Valkyria Chronicles, Heavenly Sword (Albeit I do not recommend this game), Siren Blood Curse (albeit, I think this game is terrible) and Infamous. I am really enjoying the system, even if the interface does feel a bit clunky (But I'm sure it's more me being unfamiliar with it). The PS3 has paid for itself more than enough with sheer entertainment value. I'll say that Infamous and Valkyria Chronicles alone have entertained me enough that I have zero regrets.
Yes, once you have the proper HDTV, the PS3 is a fantastic media center for all your Blu-ray/DVD needs.
The 360's a great machine and all but the DVD upscaler is absolutely horrid.
I've tried a few DVDs on both 360 and PS3, both on HDMI, and the difference is just night and day.
On the flipside... DVDs tend to look better in my 360 than in the PS3. My PS3 is a PS3 exclusive machine, and bluray player. Not that it's a bad thing.
How the fuck is that possible?
Like seriously. I tried it with a few different TV shows and films and every single one of them looked noticeably better on PS3.
In my situation any DVD I play on my 360 comes out tinted pink, so I have to stick with a regular DVD player. :P

How is the XMB clunky? Want music? Go to the music tab. Movies? The movies tab. Games? the games tab. Anything involving PSN? Network tab. Want to sort anything on your hard drive? Hit square to find a sorting style you like. Or just make custom folders for things.

Blu ray makes it region free, since blu rays are region free. DVD playback is still locked to the region it was bought in.

How is the XMB clunky?
Mostly just the arrangement of things and it takes a while to load each tab usually (not a significant amount minding). The main problem I have with it is that if you want to change user profiles, say my flatmate wants to play Killzone 2 you have to quit the game and go back to the main interface. Then he needs to go back into the game, whereas with the 360 I just sign out and he signs in and there is no further screwing around. Mostly this is just a comparison with the 360 that I've been using for a while now, which I find a lot easier to navigate (but again, I have been using one a lot longer than the other).
When Blu Ray players were super expensive and the PS3 had backward compatibility it was pretty easy to justify.
Now both of those things no longer apply, it would be a tough thing to justify unless your list of "must play or die" games includes Uncharted 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Heavy Rain, MGS4, etc.
Full disclosure - I have a PS3 and like it, but if I were looking to buy in now I'd be pretty reluctant.
i think he's asking if it's the right decision for him as opposed to other systems, not whether or not he should buy it
it seems like he's going to buy something, he just wanted advice from people who, y'know, own one already?

Except that in his original post, he talks about being a microsoft fanboy, and can't believe that he's considering a ps3. He's already interested in one and he's asking for validation on whether that's okay or not. He also mentions nothing in his post about the possibility of purchasing an alternative.
So, dick, if you put the same amount of thought into your other posts, I can see why you're jailed.

someone wants advice on whether or not he should buy the least popular system this generation and you jump all over him for wanting to be an informed consumer. you are like, the coolest dude
if someone asked if you liked haiwaiian pizza would you say they should stuff it and found out themselves?
I picked up my PS3 largely because I'd had a PS2 and was very pleased with the games that came out on that. I only ever use my PS3 as a games machine - I have a dedicated DVD player for my DVD's and when I finally make the jump to Blu-ray I'll get a dedicated Blu-ray player - and so far I haven't regretted the purchase once yet.
I don't quite know the details with the Xbox's tendency to RROD - for all I know they've sorted that problem out - but most games these days are multi-platform so moving over to a PS3 probably wouldn't be too bad in terms of game selection.
Honestly, unless there are any Xbox exclusives - current or upcoming - that you just can't bear to live without, you probably won't regret picking up a PS3.
Seriously. You already own a Bluray player, and a damned fine one at that. And now you want to buy another Bluray player?
Seriously seriously. There is absolutely nothing a stand-alone Bluray player will give you that the PS3 doesn't. If it's the remote control you want, then go buy a PS3 remote. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a whole new Bluray player.
On the topic of things to shot off Bluray spectacularness, look no further than Planet Earth. Yeah, it's a documentary, but it is narrated by David Attenborough and is full of awesome plants and animals and amazing scenery porn in glorious HD.
This thread is exactly what I'm looking for. I just got $250 for my Bday and I'm considering a PS3. However, I already own a 360 and a gaming PC. What's compelling me to this is Uncharted, God of War III will make me buy one eventually anyway, and Metal Gear Solid 4. I'm not into console shooters, so I doubt I'll get Killzone 2.
However, I have a 36inch Sony Wega, so it only puts out 780P, so the Blu-ray doesn't really sway me much (...yet). But this TV is still gorgeous and I can't see myself getting rid of it (even though it weighs 300lbs).
So, I'm still contemplating it.
If I did get it and I'm most certainly going to get the first Uncharted before #2, should I get the 120GB $299, or get the Uncharted Bundle for $350. Uncharted is $30 now, So I guess the question is, is the extra 40gb needed and worth the extra $20?

To note, the Blu-Ray player in the PS3 recieves firmware upgrade pushes if connected to the internet. You are not gaining anything in buying a second "dedicated" blu-ray player.

Not really. 120 gigs is more than enough, and if you want a bigger hard drive you can install a bigger one for cheaper probably.
Can't really go wrong either way though, honestly.
OKay, lemme clarify a few things so you can understand my thinking. I picked up my PS3 solely as a gaming machine. Blu-ray discs didn't enter my consideration because I don't have an HDTV. The only reason to go to Blu-ray is the high definition quality and with my current TV I'm not going to see the benefits. So I'm sticking to DVD and already had a dedicated DVD player when I got my PS3.
I won't pick up an HDTV for a long while yet cause they're damn expensive. I probably won't do so until I can pick up a large HDTV for about £100. By the time I do shift over, Blu-ray players should be dirt cheap and I'll pick up a standalone player to avoid wearing out my PS3. (I watch a lot of DVD's).
And honestly... I don't really get the fuss over the difference between HD and normal definition. I've seen Blu-rays played on an HDTV stuff and it really didn't wow me enough to think, "gotta get in on that". Maybe I'm being a heathen, but I'm happy with what I've got. I'll move over when it gets cheaper.

Now it all makes sense. He wants to buy two perfectly good Bluray players in case he can't see where one of them is when he wants to watch a movie.

I love when people claim there's no difference between SD DVD and blu-rays. I keep trying to see what they do, but my eyes won't accept their opinion.
Can't say enough about the Bluray/HDTV combo. Consider it a mid-range player with the option to play games (some of which are exclusive) and it's an easy call.

I love my PS3. I use it to watch downloaded episodes of House and Dexter currently, rented Blu-rays from lovefilm, quirky PSN games and dirt cheap games courtesy of UK online retailers. It does everything(tm).
Also seconding that anyone who can't see a notable difference between DVDs and Blu-rays at 720p is lying or has poor eyesight. Even on my poxy 26" LCD Blu-rays look fantastic.

Also it has polar bears in it.
One very tiny feature that I've been made aware of could offer a difference. Are there Bluray players that have a disc "memory" of several discs? So that watch five movies and stop each of them midway and you want to pop them in and immediately start where you left off. I'd bet the PS3 only remembers it for one movie.
Are there no bluray players that might have better set-top box capabilities?
Have any other Microsoft fanboys taken the plunge over to the other side of the pool? Any comments, regrets, rants?
The PS3 is the first Sony console I've owned, and I picked mine up this past weekend. I still plan to buy multiplatform games for the 360, mostly due to controller preference.
Recipe for selling a PS3 to this MS fanboy:
1 price drop
2 existing games (Uncharted and Valkyria Chronicles)
4 upcoming games (Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, and the Team Ico title)
+ a pinch of blu-ray
The only thing that has bothered me so far is that you can't use AA batteries in the controller.

I've got a 30 inch wega CRT. There is a difference, but not much. DVDs look great when upscaling on that size set. Now, on my buddy's 50ish inch plasma, HUGE difference.
Any chances of these European bundles coming stateside? I know there's probably a chance, but any rumors or news of them coming? If they keep the same Euro pricing here (roughly $50 more) it would be a steal. I've got my PS3 money all set to go, but i'll spend a bit more for an out of the box larger harddrive and a game.
