And honestly... I don't really get the fuss over the difference between HD and normal definition. I've seen Blu-rays played on an HDTV stuff and it really didn't wow me enough to think, "gotta get in on that". Maybe I'm being a heathen, but I'm happy with what I've got. I'll move over when it gets cheaper.
Does that answer your questions?
Yes!
You're blind.
I love when people claim there's no difference between SD DVD and blu-rays. I keep trying to see what they do, but my eyes won't accept their opinion.
I love when people read what they want to read as opposed to what someone actually wrote.
I can not sell/not sell you a PS3. I can only give you a testimonial.
Only bought mine because I wanted to play GTA4 and there was no PC port yet.
Haven't regretted it once. Got me into Blu-ray.
PSN is cool and apparently free=win.
Have 10 disk games. The ones I've sold back were not PS3 exclusives.
Two things suck about PS3. My friends all own Xbox's, and the lack of true RPG's make me cry.
Seriously, it kind of sucks when all your friends have 360s. I was thinking of buying Street Fighter 4 so i could play it with a bunch of friends when we have our weekly hangout. Then I realized I would have to buy it for a console that I am now using as a very large paperweight.
Sorry to go off on a slightly different tangent, but my question is fairly close to the OP's and it seemed silly to start a new topic.
I recently purchased a new PC after my old one finally croaked. Why not sell my 360? I can live just fine without Gears of War or Halo, though maybe they'll get around to porting the latest renditions of those on PC anyways. Are there really any compelling 360-exclusive games coming up?
As I see it, the 360 is a fantastic gaming PC alternative, but now that I have a gaming PC...well, what do you guys think?
And others i can't think of right now. There are so many console games that aren't on the pc or play like shit on the pc. I say hang onto it just in case.

The biggest thing about the 360 is the local multiplayer games for me. My wife and I play Castle Crashers pretty regularly. You can't play that on PC.
I currently have a nice gaming PC (E7400 OC'ed to 3.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 8800 GTS 512MB, Windows 7 w/ Direct X 11) but I play my 360 more often then not because it's more convenient than the PC. Plus if you ever want to have friends over it's much easier to bust out your 360 on your TV than it is to have your PC out.
PC and PS3 are like the solo gaming machines. The 360 and Wii are multiplayer goodness.
My PS3 is the first PS I've ever owned, I had a Gamecube and and XBox before this. I didn't want to get a Wii because it's not a multimedia device without some hacking, the online sucks balls, and there are only like 3 games I want for it (Mario Galaxy, Smash Brothers, and Metroid). I didn't want to get a Xbox 360 because it couldn't do Blu-ray, online wasn't free, they break constantly (a friend of mine has been through 3), and the exclusives list didn't really sway me (the only one I really wanted to play was Halo 3).
PS3's are much less prone to breaking, can play Blu-ray, the online is free and not terribad, and it had more exclusives I was interested in.
So now I have this awesome PS3 plugged in to my HDTV, with a PS3 media server running on my server and a PlayOn (good software to get no matter what console you end up getting) server running on my gaming comp. It's been great having this PS3 so far. When my fiancee and I got it I was very worry I'd be disappointed with the purchase but I've been nothing but pleased.
Does the PS3 slim have backwards compatability with PS2/1 games?
All PS3s can play PS1 games. The slim WILL not play PS2 games.
Fix'd
Supposedly they are making a ps2 online store, but mostly, they dont want you to buy ps2 games anymore.
They sit in the rafters of your gamestop, screeching for you to psend $60+ instead of 30 or less per game.
It is an elaborate scam to kill off ps2 game buying.
I'm a 360 guy strictly because the PS controllers have always hurt my hands, and the joysticks tend to usually be way too touchy for FPS games. I love Killzone2 and the Resistance games, but I have how hard it can be to aim while using ironsights and moving just a little bit.
I use my PS3 mostly for Bluray movies and the dl'd PS1 games I missed out on as a kid.

I've a sneaking suspicion that I have had a PS3LOLHUGE 160 Gb with Drake's Fortune purchase for me.
Do I want the slim instead? I know the technical differences, and the only 2 things I think I care about are the HD size, the physical size, and the apparently quieter fan on the slim.

You want a fan that's quieter than silent?
Am I showing my age? I thought the PS3 Biggie was supposed to be a little loud for movietime. Maybe that was the original systems only. Good to know.
The only thing that has bothered me so far is that you can't use AA batteries in the controller.
seriously? god i am so glad i have been spared by sony of fumbling around with batteries every time the controller dies. charging by powered usb was a genius move.
Actually, the PS3 seems to have no memory of Blu-ray discs, not even the current one you're watching. Sucks.
However, it seems to be able to remember approximately 2 hojillion DVDs.
Gahhh! And you all tried to persuade me to use my PS3 as a Blu-ray player when I finally make the switch in the distant future. I spent eight hours at work wondering whether you all might be right and I come back to find this!!
Yep, a dedicated Blu-ray player it is. If my DVD player can remember where I left off, I expect any Blu-ray player I own in the future to do the same.

I've got a 2 year old PS3, and I've never been able to hear the fan over anything (even when sitting idle) unless it's a 40 degree day and it's working quadruple time. But then I don't have it on anyway.

Look, bro, you're more than welcome to waste your money on whatever you want. If you think not having to reselect a chapter on a Bluray is worth $150, then go nuts. Although really, you'd be better served shoving it up your own butt since you're so anal about it.
EDIT: It's also got internet connectivity for firmware updates, so it's not like they can't add that feature in down the road.
I want one for disgaea 3 and that fat princess game. Also lbp. And everyday shooter. Maybe some other games? I do not have a ps3. It is not backwards compatible but sega tells me they are going to sell me my games again.
Don't worry, Fat Princess isn't that good.
I started to suspect after I got to thinking I don't see the thread around much and my friend who bought it has done zero talking about it.
Two things suck about PS3. My friends all own Xbox's, and the lack of true RPG's make me cry.
Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles, Demons Souls?
I have both Folklore and Valkyria Chronicles, and I love them both dearly. However, I don't consider them true RPGs in any sense. More of action/strat games with RPG elements.
Being close to 40, my perception of RPG's still consist of Wasteland, Fallout, Might and Magic, Ultima etc.... There is nothing like this on the PS3.
I haven't tried Demons Souls, and I'm looking forward to buying it.
Edit: I do consider Fallout 3 and Oblivion "true" RPG's. However, I purchased them for the PC.

It -is- a good game, but it's hard to enjoy with random people because nobody wants to work together unless you're lucky and some people know how to play proper, or have mics to coordinate. If you can actually organize games with friends, it's a guaranteed blast.
Why would fairly cold temperatures make his PS3 louder? Don't fans usually....
Damn you American Standard Units! Damn you to hell!!!
Yes, I'm Australian, so I was going by Celsius. The PS3's pretty quiet unless it's a furnace, or you are playing a game that pushes it a lot. Watching movies? Never hear it.

I mentioned it once. That's not exactly anal. (And my post was intended to be more humourous than serious. I probably should have used smilies, but it's late and I was eating some chips )
And quite honestly, it's a moot point. Like I said, it'll probably be at least three years before I think of going to Blu-ray (my current telly should easily last that long). When the time comes, I'll take a look at the prices of everything involved and make my decision based on them.
At the moment, my instinct is to go with a separate Blu-ray player because it's a set up I'm used to. One machine for gaming and another for watching DVDs. Three years down the line... well, there's a good chance Blu-ray players will be like my DVD player, which I paid £30 for. If they're that cheap, I won't think twice about getting a separate Blu-ray player.
If they're still around £150... well, maybe things will be different.
One of the quickest ways to turn a civil discussion into some sort of miscommunication-fueled fanboy war is to start to confuse a personal preference with a recommendation. Be careful please. :-(
Remember, there is nothing wrong with you if you don't want a PS3.

Wow, five pages?! And here I thought I'd get page after page of nerdrage, and all we've got brewing is a debate about the Blu Ray aspect of it.
The more I look into it, the more I want it. I almost always go overboard with buying consoles; last generation I purchased a gamecube at launch (originally a Nintendo fanboy), bought a ps2 for Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2 and a few other games, and then eventually picked up a used xbox for Halo and all the exclusives.
I think the ps3 will sate my hunger, at least for a while. And I suppose it'd be nice to enjoy the benefits of BluRay and my HDTV for a few months before heading abroad. I think my current plan is to wait until I'm back in the states, since the extra bit of Canadian taxes (another 6 or seven percent) actually adds up for a decent amount. is there any reason to pick up the Slim over a refurbished older 60 GB? Most of the used consoles I've seen online come with HDMI cables (I think) and if I were to pick up a Slim I'd have to buy those separetely.
Choices, choices.

I'll second this. As long as you have a decent library of PS2 games to go with it, the backwards compatibility of the old 60Gb models is a major plus.
Disclaimer: I picked a used 60 GB so I'll be biased toward encouraging that decision for others.
Here's the way I weighed the pros and cons of used 60 GB versus new slim:
Pros:
in-hardware (non-emulated) PS2 compatibility (MAJOR decision making factor for me)
four USB ports (doesn't matter much to me)
built-in memory card ports (which I don't care about)
Cons:
hardware failure rate is allegedly a little higher, although still very low (I expect it'll beat the pants off of my personal 360's average of 98% availability)
no warranty -- repairs would cost some amount I can't remember, $150 or something
larger and more power hungry. I'm expecting another $60-$100 in power cost over the next couple years.
I think the failure rate is what worries me the most, and if you have the money to be buying a third current-gen console and accessories and games for it, I'll assume you could absorb a surprise $150 hit if something improbable happened and you needed warranty service. So the failure rate shouldn't be a huge concern.

Ooh wait that's right. I'm a huge computer nerd (CS grad student). I plan to use my PS3 for mostly gaming, but is there anything interesting I can do with Linux on the PS3 that I can't already do with a dual core Linux box that's a couple feet away from my PS3? Games or interesting computing apps or something?

No, there is goddamn nothing at all you can do with the PS3 as a linux box. Shit's walled up so you can only use one core of the cell processor with no access to the GPU. It's a non-feature.

I've played one PS2 game in all the time Ive had my 60GB. People greatly overestimate the value of BC.
eh, i'd agree but when people have large PS2 libraries and are selling the PS2 to help pay for it, it'd be nice to have that function there
hell, me and my friends have stints where they just play PS1 games like spyro, old tony hawks, and MGS1

It also upconverts, I think. I just tested it on Ferris Bueller, but I only have the cables that came with the box so I don't know if the print was just good or it's crisper due to the PS3.
