Agreed. However, I modded my PS2 to play games off a built-in hard drive to cut back on load times, so I feel like I still get a benefit out of having two gigantic black monoliths under my TV.
I want one for disgaea 3 and that fat princess game. Also lbp. And everyday shooter. Maybe some other games? I do not have a ps3. It is not backwards compatible but sega tells me they are going to sell me my games again.
Don't worry, Fat Princess isn't that good.
I started to suspect after I got to thinking I don't see the thread around much and my friend who bought it has done zero talking about it.
It -is- a good game, but it's hard to enjoy with random people because nobody wants to work together unless you're lucky and some people know how to play proper, or have mics to coordinate. If you can actually organize games with friends, it's a guaranteed blast.
This, so much this. Not only will random pubbies not cooperate but most of the time they will not harvest resources either, all the while screaming about whatever upgrade they want to happen first.
There is a reason I've put in more time as Worker than any other class.
Advice time for a new PS3 guy without games. What do I do on R&C and Uncharted? Do I wait for the new releases, or are the originals good enough that I shouldn't wait?
No, there is goddamn nothing at all you can do with the PS3 as a linux box. Shit's walled up so you can only use one core of the cell processor with no access to the GPU. It's a non-feature.
To be more precise about the cores: you do have access to 6 out of 8 or the auxiliary SPU's, but most linux programs are not compiled to take advantage of them and only use the main PPE.
You can get some software that takes advantage of the available cores, but it's largely experimental and on its way to obsolescence due to the slim not supporting linux. It might be interesting to experiment by yourself with parallel programming using a PS3, but it goes far beyond just using threads and requires learning tools and techniques which are specific to the Cell architecture.
Advice time for a new PS3 guy without games. What do I do on R&C and Uncharted? Do I wait for the new releases, or are the originals good enough that I shouldn't wait?
Both of those are at Greatest Hits prices now, I'd say go for 'em.
The system itself is a gorgeous, effective piece of machinery; when a developer gets it on the right track it makes for a great gaming experience. The exclusives, while not being the glorious stable of gaming bliss that a SDF agent would have you believe, are worth the purchase, though one should keep in mind the following:
PSN is free for a reason. No private chat, no cross game chat, voice chat doesn't work correctly in some games; no parties and no truly effective cross game invites. Worst of all, the port for a wired headset is the USB port on your system; if you don't want to be tethered to the system you have to buy a bluetooth headset.
Sony's marketing department is run by a bunch of drunken monkeys: the useless introduction of 16-player text chat (outside your game) and the current bomb that is the Go prove this beyond a doubt. Further evidence: they spent the entirety of the PS3's approaching launch espousing the magic of 1080p, yet, did not include the necessary cables, or a headset, or much of *anything* with their six hundred dollar system. Meanwhile, their competitor, the $200-cheaper-360, came with component cords, a headset, and by that point, I believe, a basic game (Forza 2 and Marvel, wasn't it?)
As you can see, that failed spectacularly. Sony's marketing dept. expected the brand to sell, not their toy. (Also, Sony seems to inspire idiocy in greater quantities than either Nintendo or Microsoft--the SDF's cries of "you get what you pay for" have turned to "online should be free!" hmm.
So really, the console itself is fantastic; it's the people surrounding it you should be concerned with, I suppose. The company behind it seems determined to commit financial seppuku, as well.

So....any chance of those sweet Euro bundles coming our way with the same tiny price increase? I'm trying to decide if i should wait for the possible bundles or just go for the slim now.

Just sat and watched Sunshine, the Danny Boyle film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/ in Blu Ray on my PS3 which rocked. Also really enjoy streaming AVIs onto my big screen TV.
The fact that I also get to play games is a bonus so far tbh Bought the slim recently and haven't regretted it at all - just waiting for lovefilm to send me that chronicle rpg game that crops up in these threads in HUGE type now
I have a brand new Slim.
I opened a brand new copy of VC three weeks ago? (whenever the slim came out)
I installed VC.
I have yet to even hit new game.
HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?
Anyways,
The PS3 at $600 was ridiculously priced. $400 was hard to swallow but $300 is an excellent price point for the features and games. If you have $300 (or $270 through dell) of disposable cash, it makes for a great wireless bluray player that happens to play PS3 games.
If you already have a 360, then do you think 300 is worth it for a blu-ray player and a handful of exclusives?

To answer your first paragraph;
Sorry for you.
To answer your second paragraph;
300 is definitely worth it for a blu-ray player on its own if you have an HDTV, let alone a Bluray player that also plays Uncharted and Valkyria Chronicles. I had a 360 for a few years before I got my PS3, and I absolutely love them both. They're like my children, except when I play with them in the middle of the night, they don't get taken away by social services.

Rumour has it cross game chat is coming in the next firmware update - it was dropped from 3.00 (when it was supposed to be implemented) because it wasn't ready in time.

They're both still awesome, no reason to miss out on them. Though I'd suggest playing Uncharted before Uncharted 2 if only for the fact that you'll be trying to do all the cool new stuff after playing Uncharted 2 (stealth, improved melee, traversal combat, etc) and it obviously won't work.

$300 is most certainly not worth it for just a blu-ray player to me. Movies are great, but c'mon $300 to watch them? That's a total ripoff.
Yeah, I don't regret getting my PS3 thanks to MGS/Uncharted/PSN/Last Guardian/Gow3/Heavy Rain, but I can almost never make myself spend $30 on a blu ray.
Valkyria Chronicles is the kind of game you might want to rent first. If it clicks, it apparently clicks in a big way, but I just couldn't get into it. The writing, characters, and general atmosphere was just so bad I felt embarrassed to be playing it, both in front of other people and by myself.

No offense to you, but Cross-Game Chat has been 'coming in the next firmware' since before 2.7. I'll believe it when I see it.

Be fair damn it, the last two PS3 commercials have been pretty good! Especially the cliche'd fat internet elitist trying to stick it to Sony and the $299 rumor. It's as if they're pulling a Shatner.

Isn't it 3 with the new Uncharted 2 commercial, with the guy complaining that his girlfriend thinks it's a movie?

Haven't seen that one yet. I like the one where the exec is clearly going to get some three way inter-species mixed erotica with that guys wife and new puppy while his two kids blissfully play LBP. There was a lot of implying going on in that commercial, most of it confirming that Sony execs are depraved schisters with no morale compass to speak of. Sort of like Al Pacino in The Devil's Advocate, just not as intense.
God I love those new commercials. Much better than those horrifying launch abominations.

Figures. I was really hoping he was a real exec. I know it's blasphemous, but I can't help but feel Reggie couldn't pull off that particular brand of smug/awesome.
Valkyria Chronicles just reminds me that we're never going to see a Skies of Arcadia sequel. So I stopped playing because it was making me sad. Fuck that game.
Skies of Arcadia 2: Vyse, Aika, and Fina travel to the far ends of the earth only to find a small country on the verge of war. Their can-do attitude inspires them to join a local militia, and together, they kick all kinds of ass. Then some whiny biology student gets all the credit.
Its like, games used to be great in the Dreamcast days. No epic struggle in a WW1 alternate reality. No political machinations or any of that bullshit.
Just 'I'M AN AIR PIRATE. IT'S FUN BEING AN AIR PIRATE, LET'S PIRATE THINGS IN THE AIR'
It wasn't that it was kiddy, which many confuse it for. It's that it didn't have an edge. It was unlike Final Fantasy in almost every way. And orders of magnitude better.
The only JRPG that I thought made JRPGs actually fun. And Valkyria comes close to recapturing that magic, very close. But it falls short because it has that brown sheen to it. Like it has been corrupted by the modern gaming landscape.
