and unlike everybody else in this thread I'm not just recommending my school, I don't even go there
trust me
I've visited Reed, some of my friends/acquaintances go to Reed, I've interviewed with Reed, I've done a lot of research on Reed
If she's academically motivated (the one thing you didn't mention, and it's a rigorous school) she belongs there
Reed is pretty tough to beat as an academically-minded music/culture/drugs nerd.
do you go there?
nah, I just live in portland and am friendly with a number of graduates. I wasn't trying to be sarcastic either; people I know from/at reed are some of the brightest people out there.
On the other hand the school has very much it's own culture and if you're not with that it might not be the best place to go

I go to UC Berkeley. It's a pretty fun environment, and San Francisco is a short BART ride away! I'm in the humanities, but I hear we have a pretty fantastic engineering program.
The larger student co-operatives all have fairly large drug scenes too. But I think that goes without saying.

the university a city up from me here in new zealand is the best engineering school in the country (I'm pretty sure there's only two that do engineering) but it is the other side of the world. Prostitutes' corpses also end up in the river that runs through it a couple of times a year so you'll have to warn her about that just in case.

I would totally pimp my alma mater but it looks to be getting worse and worse with each passing year. I think I hit one of the last entrance dates where it was worth it.
I went to Humboldt State for a year. Does she like weed, vegetarian restaurants, hippies, and more weed? I went there not really knowing about the surrounding culture but ended up liking it to a point. In the end however, I found myself wanting both a bigger city and cheaper housing.
I now go to Linn Benton Community College, though I can't really suggest that to her unless she's looking to get some cheap general ed classes. OSU has a great engineering program, but I can't really suggest Corvallis as a city as it is a really boring place to live. Due to this and the nearing completion of my Associates of Arts transfer degree, I am moving over to Eugene to attend U of O. While I haven't heard much about the engineering program it definitely fits the liberal environment bill. It also has a pretty nice music scene, and a lot of options for things to do. It's not quite a big city at least not for those acquainted with real big cities, but certainly is not a small one. As goes for all of Oregon though, there is non-stop rain.
Not so much with the weed. She's never had it. It's not like she's looking for a place that's all work and no play, but drugs aren't themselves a draw.
Whoever said Carnegie Mellon & MIT -- she's already thinking about those.
The story: I have a little sister choosing colleges to apply to. Tell me why your school is awesome (or not) and I'll pass along your sage advice.
My sis:
1. Is American. Most likely she'll be going to school in the US.
2. Is crazy smart and wants to be an engineer. (Civil or Operations Research, probably.) Loves physics.
3. Is bi. Needs a school where that doesn't ruffle feathers.
4. Is kind of a cynical, worldly, music-freak type. A city girl till death. She disdains sorority girls, preppies, and places where everyone is white.
Fire away!
I man I guess she could come here to Columbia
Our Op Research department is quite good. Dunno about Civil but I have some friends who are civil. Physics is obviously good.
Obviously no one cares who is gay or bi or whatever here.
Everyone here is definitely not white. Far from it. Obviously frat scene is minimal.
Music shit here is very good too.
Ummm, but then there are a lot of things I don't like about Columbia
But it IS a good school
There is a bloated shitty bureaucracy at every school. My first year at HSU when I was with my lawyer dad moving in to the dorms and trying to figure out where all my financial aid forms were supposed to go, the school actually got mad at him for helping me fill out the forms that required information from him because they wanted me to learn how to deal with their bloated shitty bureaucracy by myself.
I was pretty much the only student who had any of his financial aid shit in on time for the financial aid department and ended up, because of my dad's help, showing a bunch of other guys in my dorm how to fill out the forms and where to drop stuff off. A lot of them didn't even know that they were supposed to have certain forms turned in, and would've ended up in serious shit if I hadn't mentioned it. I mean yeah, it's good to try to figure this stuff out on your own, but students are already busy people and they really could learn a bit about customer service. It's slightly easier with community colleges, but the BSB is still there, especially in the Financial Aid departments.
Villanova University! It's where I went. The engineering dept. is tops. It's relatively close to Philly. But it's kinda preppy and superwhite and a catholic university, though they've had a big push for diversity lately. I still met lots of cool diverse good peeps there.
But you should send your sister to the university of Alberta, in glorious Edmonton, Alberta!
We've got Engineering! We've got Physics!
Hell, we've got Engineering Physics!
Go to U of Alberta if you're a douche. U of Calgary is the superior option.

i think the university of miami has a good engineering program
i assume it must be good because most engineering students sleep on cots in the engineering building because they are always doing some kind of project
The only reason to go to U of S engineering (or that school in general) is if your grades aren't good enough to get into either Alberta or Calgary.
Or you're scared of changes in elevation and/or trees.

A minimum of five years of winter, racism and rote mathematics will cure her shitty attitude, make no mistake.
Heh, this was a hilarious response.

Right now I am too lazy to type what I don't like
But fuck the bloated shitty bureaucracy for one

But as a girl she has a much better chance of getting in too
But I didn't apply because it too nerdy

Yeah, I dunno, if she has any questions let me know, I'd be okay to answer them. In a non-creepy way. I'm in the Engineering School btw.
Michigan!
Worcester or Renesselaer Polytechnic
UIUC
Johns Hopkins
Villanova
Penn State
Georgia Tech
Second this one. Wife graduated from there and she loved it.
excellent aerospace program

go to U of Saskatchewan
i assume it must be good because most engineering students sleep on cots in the engineering building because they are always doing some kind of project
but the us news and world report rankings might be useful
this is undergrad:
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/engineering
then i would be relevant to this discussion

whoops
Also, they're big into Nuclear Physics, so I might even end up doing grad school there.
I'm just a little afraid that when I go there, everyone will be like shank
no offense, shank; you're just not the sort of person I'd like to be surrounded with at college
"Yeah baby, swirl that Erlenmeyer flask the way daddy likes it".

yes, the feeling is mutual
:O
but I would probably be pretty pissed if I turned up to college and everyone was an internet caricature too
