XP bootup problems

Today my computer decided to take a shit at my head. I just moved, plugged everything up and booted it, noticed that my PS/2 keyboard was plugged into the wrong socket so I plugged it into the right one, it didn't work so I rebooted and XP load screen loads and then a quick BSOD I don't even get to read and reboot.
This keeps happening no matter what I try, tried unplugging everything except monitor and keyboard, booting into safe mode, plugging the keyboard into the mouse socket but nothing.
I really don't have time for this I should be working on a school project please help.

Using a ubuntu live CD to do this (god ubuntu is so great you guys)
My XP Partition is using Service pack 3, and worked fine before this.
CPU AMD Phenom 9500 quad-core
memory 2gb 800mhz
GPU Ati Radeon HD4870
MOBO MSI - AM2+ 790FX Crossfire PCIE

BIOS monitors the CPU at around 40 degrees and system at around 35.

What do I do without having to reinstall XP?

Jam F8 before XP starts to load and choose disable automatic system restart. Copy down the error code (should look something like STOP 0x000007F, albeit with a different code) and Google it.

It was a boot disk problem, running checkdisk in the recovery console did nothing so I'm going to reinstall everything tomorrow once I've got everything backed up.
