HDMI cable trouble. LOCK PLEASE

I bought this HDMI cable off Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002L5R78/ref=ox_ya_oh_product Now at $2.99 and that includes shipping I couldn't pass it up.

I also have this TV: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9235142&type=product&id=1218064394100 On sale for $399

And a 80GB BC PS3 got for $250

Now the problem is the PS3. I tried setting it to 720p w/ HDMI support and it made the letters smaller and generally very ugly rather than how it was.

I plugged it in and I think it's Hi-Def. I have no Blu Ray discs to speak of yet(waiting for Star trek), but have tried it on Drake's Fortune.

I don't think I see the HD. I want to believe it's there but still should it be "super OMG awesome" or just look like really clear and fine?

It will look clear and fine.

As for Blu-Ray, it will look quite a lot better than a DVD, but if you don't have a 120hz tv then you won't get all the benefits.

Check your PS3/TV settings? I am 95% sure I have the exact same HDMI cables from Amazon and mine works great, especially on Blu-Ray movies. Crisp.

Make sure the PS3 really knows it's outputting 720p. When you plugged it in, there should have been a menu that popped up asking you to auto-configure visual settings and all that; if that didn't happen the tv might not support hdcp and the PS3 is silly about outputting HD resolutions without it.

Here's what the problem is. I set the ps3 to hdmi. No problem on the 480p setting. However, we have a 720p tv, and when I try to set the video settings on the ps3 to 720p, it resizes the screen to what appears to be full screen settings, where we have a wide screen tv so it looks awful. It makes it so that instead of using the whole tv screen, everything is centered and there are large portions of unused space on the screen to the left and right of what is being used if its on the 720p setting. It looks just fine on the 480p setting but since we have a 720p we'd like things to look as nice as possible.

This is a problem with the TV, then. Check for any widescreen/letterbox settings. It may also just be a technological limitation for that model

If your ps3 output is set to 480p you are not seeing high definition by definition, no pun intended.

the different standards are defined by the number of vertical pixels in the image,

    480i is your "standard" definition
    480p is considered "enhanced" definition
720p, 1080i, and 1080p is "high" definition, with 1080p being the best as it is 1080 vertical pixels, with the entire screen replaced every cycle.

    edit:

as far as fixing it goes, I second the "check your tv settings" recommendation.

Thank you everyone who tried to help.

Turns out the TV isn't right for that setting.

I am locking this. Thanks again.
