Windows XP install cannot copy file

Hi.

Trying to install WinXP on this laptop:
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/product/24945/review/hp_nc8230.html

It is a fresh install on a cleanly repartitioned HD. The setup portion where all the files are copying fails at what seems like the last file before the install. I apologize that I can't remember what the file is called but it's something like Winmx.dll...

I tried a bunch of times, with no luck. I have done some research... Tried removing the extra stick of RAM thinking it might be bad. have used the CD many times, but haven't tried another, as I don't have one. Haven't tried a different cd drive, for the same reason.

Would copying the i386 folder to the HD help? is this possible by booting to the CD somehow? (No floppy drive)

a second issue is that the BIOS is protected, as this is a second-hand computer from a college...what is the best way to reset the password?

Thanks in advance.

Generally there's a jumper you move that will clear the BIOS password. Where exactly it is depends on your mobo, but it'll usually be a little block of 3 pins, with a jumper across 2 of them that says something like BIOS RST, or whatnot. Finding the manual for your mobo would work too.

As for the rest of it, I'm not sure what else I can say other than give copying it to the HD a go or try a different disc.

If you don't have a disc available you could also try DLing the installer for your version(and verifying it against the checksum for a known good one) and then using your valid XP key with it.

You do have a valid XP key correct?

    Yes, I do.

Thanks for the tips, I will give them a try.

I see that a lot on my XP backup CD's. try burning another copy of that disc, there's prolly a scratch preventing it from copying that file.
