I would just perception check 20 that shit. It's a trap. Telekinesis the gold off the top.

    What'd you roll?

    A 1.

You telekinesis yourself onto the gold.

One of my favorite parts of the D&D podcast was when I think... Wil Wheaton rolled a history check to see if he knew about the cave of something or other, and the dialogue went something like this:

"Have you heard of the Cave of (whatever it was)?"
"Um... Have I? Can I roll for that?"
    "Yeah, go ahead"
    "4. WHAT'S A CAVE?"
it was a tower, but yeah, that was fantastic

rooms that suck all the oxygen out while pumping in poisonous gas and the walls close in and every brick in the wall is a symbol of pain

I read a thread either in CF or another forum where DMs talked about their most devious traps.

One was a room where the boss/underling was, who upon seeing the players dives down trapdoor. The players look and see the hole is quite deep. They also find a wand of slow fall in the guy's desk.

Unfortunately for them, the walls of the hole have all sorts of windows from which minions fire shit at them as they fall.

Wouldn't magic lubricant be acid proof. No, no this trap doesn't make any sense.

Well you're not trying to kill the magic lubricant with the acid so I don't see the problem

the problem is that a quick-witted adventurer could slather herself with lubricant as she slides towards the acid, giving her enough time to teleport out or something

How could they teleport out of it? It's Magic lubricant.

Reminds me of when Jerry was on the DnD podcast saying the ultimate trap room is 'The party enters the room. They look up at the ceiling. It is a mouth'.

If the acid is truly sentient, perhaps it can be reasoned with.

I'm sorry, I couldn't understand what I assume was supposed to be a well-reasoned argument through all the screaming because you're being dissolved by sentient acid.

Well regular acid would dissolve you straight away. "Sentient acid" implies that it would have to decide whether to dissolve you or not, so perhaps you could use this time to bargain with it.

I've been looking for the podcast page forever, navigating their website is complete bullshit. The strips they do for these are great, especially:

Actually I think it implies that there is no escape from the acid as it is sentient so it can use it's superior intellect to prevent you from climbing out
