However, the ring will never leave your finger, and you will be unable to ever describe to another living person what you see.

okay, I thought of a good example. My dad has a little sailing boat that he loves to race on sundays. It's a 2 man boat, and the races are pretty exciting with sea spray, high speeds and billowing sails etc etc.

I could never get into it though because it takes about 1 hour to drive to the river, 2 hours to set up the boat and then you get about an hours race time. Then you have to pack the boat up and drive home. It's a whole days activity for about an hour of sailing. I'm just like what's the point

So you're lazy and unmotivated, but it'd be easier for you to blame society for it than admit it?

Interestingly enough, I think a lack of responsibility for your own actions is a real problem in today's society.

ok here let's fix this problem

instead of racing for an hour and coming home, race for an hour and then sit around jerking off for another 5

since the activity now takes longer than the planning, you'll love it!!!!!

Not to mention during 'all that setup and planning' in the sailing example, he could be doing plenty of worthwhile things. He could get to know his father better by having a decent conversation, or enjoy the scenery of the ride to river, but no fuck it's all a waste.

I'm kind of lost as to where the planning stops and the activity begins.

Because I thought if you were driving a boat to the lake, that'd be part of the activity, not the planning.

Or does planning just mean the "not fun" part?

So I have an audition in a month or so.

After a month of practicing only an hour or so a day and trying to decide on my audition pieces, i finally picked them and ramped practicing up to 2-3 hours a day last month. Though now I can start relaxing back to an hour a day just to keep my chops sharp on the pieces. It will take me two hours to drive to(and later from) the audition. The audition will last maybe 30 minutes max. I already had pieces learned that I probably could've gotten up to performance and audition readiness in a week of light practicing or so, but I wanted to get the new pieces up to temper to this audition. And I wanted to learn the new pieces, which I might not ever actually perform anyways.

I also am in charge of a pit orchestra for a show and we spend 4 hours a week practicing so that we can perform for a grand total of... 12 hours across three days, and we have been doing so since the second week of September. In addition to that I spend a good hour making rehearsal plans for rehearsals. And my assistant spends probably an hour organizing things.

In fact, I can't think of a single performance I have where the amount of time spent rehearsing doesn't outstrip the time performing by at least double.

But no, the OP is right, it's a problem with society, no one ever plans or does anything that requires any work and it's not just the OP that has this problem.

ironic - characterized by often poignant difference or incongruity between what is expected and what actually is; "madness, an ironic fate for such a clear thinker"; "it was ironical that the well-planned scheme failed so completely"

Irony would be if he jokingly said his father spent more time planning him than it took to execute, when in fact he was an accident.
