I always got confused playing Zelda 2 as a kid.

I'd get to finding the candle to light up caves, but then, I'd never know where the fuck to go.

I mean, sure, I would get lost and stuff in Zelda 1, but there was always something confusing about Zelda 2 to me for some reasons.

Ahhh, aye... the world was a lot bigger (kind of) and more varied in a lot of ways, and as a result it was definitely easier to get lost. I think in your case, once you get the candle your primary goal would've been to make it through the cave leading south from the starting area, to make it to... I can't remember for sure, but I think it was the dungeon that was at the end of a big marsh pit. I think that was the next "linear" one.

The nice thing about Zelda 2 though was that some parts of it weren't quite as directly linear as Zelda 1. Whereas in Zelda 1 the only real use for the item you got in a given level was usually just to directly solve whatever was in the way of getting you to the next dungeon, Zelda 2's items opened up a wide swath of varieties. For example, once you get the candle you *could* make a beeline for the marsh dungeon. Or you can say "F--- that" and go through Death Mountain to get the items in there.

Also, for the person having the problem with that last boss...
The shadow link is probably one of the hardest bosses I've ever played on the NES (which is another testament to the fact that it was a great game =) ). However, the big trick is that once you hit him, don't let up until he recovers from the hit... and make sure that you have the upward thrust technique learned first. If you can get him to make the mistake of downward thrust-attacking you, a quick upward thrust will get him pretty much every time. When he goes on the offensive, just play it cool and hang back or try to downward thrust him. (if I remember correctly, he either can't or doesn't frequently upward thrust to counter it... but he does backpedal very quickly so beware) Don't go toe-to-toe when he goes on the offensive, he'll beat you almost every time unless you've gotten *REALLY* good at the quick upward and downward thrusts to fool the AI. You have to be able to beat the hardest shield-wielding knights without taking a scratch before you should even consider that kind of strategy though.

Speaking of beating the shield-bearing knights, in the end the one technique that destroys them and breaks their difficulty also breaks shadow links' difficulty (though shadow link can defend himself better than the knights can, who just stand there dumbfounded until they're cleaved in half): jump, and then JUST as you're about to hit the ground slash. You'll end up swinging for basically their heads, and their shields will not be able to block it if you time it right. They're left defenseless. It's kind of a cheap strategy so don't use it unless you don't care how you win as long as you beat it... but if you're going for the easy win, train yourself to do the last second sword hit after a jump.

Also, it's good to see so many Zelda 2 fans! =) Usually whenever I talk Zelda with people, everyone bashes Zelda 2 (mostly for things that I at least think aren't true ;) ). I honestly think I had more fun playing Zelda 2 than I did playing Ocarina of Time. Maybe it was just the "magic" of the 8 bit systems or maybe because it was in my less jaded youth, but I remember the days playing Zelda 2 very fondly. =)

Muscle March! Hahahah! I'll be checking that out provided it's not too costly.

This is the most terrifying news I've heard all day. Imagine some frat boys breaking this out during a bender and not being able to figure out whether to laugh uncontrollably or feel extremely awkward while playing. It's stuff like that which keeps me up at night, y'know?

As far as Zelda 2 goes, it's not exactly one of my favorite entries in the series, but I'll give it credit for trying to do something fresh. The high difficulty doesn't win it many points, though.

Ahh, aye I can understand that. There were definitely parts of Zelda 2 that were a total pain in the butt.

For example, that strategy I came up with above for the cheap way of beating
    the shadow link
? It probably took me a whole day of facing off against him over... and over... and over... before I finally figured out something that kind of works. So I do feel your pain.

But oh it was so much fun too. I really loved the feeling of non-linearity... even though it was *almost* as linear as Zelda 1, it felt a lot less linear because it wasn't so heavy with the "you'll only be using this so that you can access the next level" items, and because there were some important things that you literally could go the whole game without getting and still beat the game... so they were like actual secrets - or at least, actually special.

Zelda 2 is really only hard at the beginning before you've leveled up at all. One or two dungeons in, as your power and personal skill increases, it becomes really fun.

Aye, that is true as well. I think that situation I mentioned above, and perhaps one or two of the other bosses before, were really painfully tough in my opinion... but indeed, most of the game is just golden and fun and fantastic. =)

Gorram, now I want to play it again. I think I have some Wii points left over. I should be working on the NaNoWriMo count site or the MMT registration... bah. Maybe tomorrow I'll start up some Zelda 2 action. =)

I still haven't beaten Zelda 2. Last time I tried I got to the very end, but can't beat the damn Boss (not
    Dark Link
    , the other boss).

What did the update DO, anyway? I can't find anything at all new.
When the ThunderBird first appears, cast the Thunder spell once. He will turn red and a face will be visable in the center near the top. Slash at that to beat him

Incently, the first time I fought him when I was a kid...
I was using a Game Genie with the code for infinate MP (the final palace is consideribly easier when you can obliterate everyone on screen with a push of the Select Button). Anyhow I got to the Thunderbird and cast Thunder repeatedly. He turned red like normal but then I kept using the spell over and over to damage him; this took quite some time as he took the damage very slowly but I eventually killed him this way.

However when he died the key didn't drop so I was unable to 'finish' the boss fight and scroll to the next room, effectivly ending the game.

Two weeks in a row of two VC games...I hope this trend stays.

Overall kind of crap week other than Viking Invasion which looks interesting.

I'm glad Nintendo seems to unload all of their crap games all at once, so that next week we get Excite Bike and maybe even a ReBirth or Cave Story? I can dream.

Heh, the original Street Fighter. Back when the special moves were a pain to pull off but did a shit-ton of damage.

Like I said, it makes me think that it could be two things.

First: It gets a bunch of the crap out of the way so good stuff can come later.

Second: It keeps people from spending their money this week so we can all afford to buy Excite Bike: World Rally next week.

    It's a genius move on Nintendo's part. :P

Heh, I suppose. Nintendo might have a problem if Cave Story releases next week, though.

Oh, who am I kidding? The Apocalypse will happen before Cave Story is released.

I want Cave Story too, but I figure by not worrying about it, it will eventually show up and make me very happy when I least expect it too.

Darn, still no Cave Story. I'm sorely tempted to do another runthrough of the PC version, but I really want to wait for this one.
This time I will save Curly, dammit!!!

Heh, the original Street Fighter . . . didn't they botch that port to the TG16?

It's a faithful port. The controls are pretty rough, but that is in fact a faithful recreation of what it is like to play the game in the arcade. The TG16 controller had fewer buttons than most SF1 arcade machines, but considering the rudimentary nature of the original arcade game, button loss is not really even terribly relevant.

The earliest arcade version had two pressure sensitive buttons instead of six, and I believe the TGCD version attempts to emulate the feel of the two button layout, by changing your attack based on how long you hold down the button. That is my hazy memory of it, anyway.

And here's a good video review:

I remember I had to do this in the past, but it's happening again where on certain VC games it's all black on the screen (I can hear the music) but when I press the home button and the menu pops up, I can see the shaded image in the background. I remember when I first hooked the wii up to my old tv I had to go to home and put in some button combination. I have a new tv and the problem has come up again. I don't remember the button config.

Also, is pokemon snap on vc? That game was tits.

Yes, Pokemon Snap is on the VC with the added function of being able to transfer your taken pictures to the message board so you can put them on an SD card or send them to someone.

I keep waiting for Excitebike 64 on VC. I never had the pleasure of playing it, but everyone I know raves about it. Will this remake be 3D N64 style or old school 2D NES style? Sorry, can't click the link from work.

    It's NES style.

N64 version was fantastic, but I never had the opportunity to play 2 player.

Well, we know when Bit.Trip Void is coming out now.

    November 23rd.

There are lengthy videos showing the game in action, but I'll just post this short trailer instead:

Hadn't seen this around here yet, but it looks like we might get WiiWare demos yet...

The story got buried pretty quickly at IGN, here is a link: http://wii.ign.com/articles/104/1041407p1.html

or just read the story below:
    IGN wrote:
November 3, 2009 - WiiWare is slowly becoming packed with content, especially in Japan where the service often sees four titles released in a single week. Wouldn't it be great to be able to try out some of those games before handing over your precious WiiPoints? Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata appears to think so!

During the Q&A session at a recent earnings briefing, Iwata told investors that Nintendo would begin a test program for WiiWare demos some time this month. The test will cover just a few titles.

According to Iwata, Nintendo is undertaking this test to see if it can get more players shopping on the Wii Shopping Channel. He admitted that the market for WiiWare and DSi Ware is currently small, with the Wii Shopping Channel and DSi Shop browsed only by people who already know the game they want to get.

Iwata also said that he doesn't feel demos are necessarily the solution to the problem. He may or may not be right, but we're sure some players would appreciate being able to try out certain WiiWare games in advance.

Nintendo hasn't officially announced this WiiWare demo program just yet, so we don't have specifics on titles or a start time frame. It's also unclear if the test will be limited to Japan, or if Nintendo will let the entire world take part.

Once we hear the specifics, we'll be sure and pass along the info to you.

This would be awesome. I am more excited about WiiWare games than full blown releases these days.
