Left Trigger, fully depressed locked onto an enemy. Left trigger up to half depressed drew your gun but allowed manual aim with the right analog stick. Right trigger fired.
I was wondering how the gunplay would control. The only other gta Ive played was San Andreas, and you had to use circle (it was on ps2) to shoot.
If I drop into this thread again and see people talking about Deadwood, Clint Eastwood, Westerns or anything that is not Red Dead Revolver I'm going to start throwing infractions. This thread is only about the game, it is not about the entire Western genre, we have a forum that you can make a Westerns thread in should you so wish. Last warning.
Honestly I'm surprised the thread hasn't just been closed by now, as that was something like the third or fourth warning. After the cowboys with Godzilla I figured it was only a matter of time. I think it really would be best if someone would just go and make a thread about westerns in SE++ or something, give people a place to get their western out.
Seems to me the hype got a bit too big a bit too early, and people have run out of game-relevant things to say. How long is left, 3 weeks?
It's a bit early but any indication how the engine runs? GTA IV was an amazing game but there certainly were a few slow/iffy moments with the engine. Nothing that took me out of the game. In a way this is more simplistic (no giant high rise buildings, no cars flipping over) but the landscapes/draw distance looks stunning.
BTW I've steered clear of all videos up to now so I can't judge from them

I've been following this game for a year and a half. They didn't start advertising it until about two months before release. Trust me, the hype has most definitely not been getting too big too early.

Agreed.
Right up until PAX Prime 2009, i'd barely heard a rumble about it. Then, they had the Live Demo of it, got all excited and...a whole lot of nothing. I finally started seeing articles and the like about 2 months ago in various magazines and sites.
By this time, I think Rockstar had been throwing GTA 4 adverts up on the telly, but I don't think i've seen one for this game yet.
To be fair, with how much of a crunch and how many delays the game's been under, I can't say for sure how long it's been that they were able to run the game for 10 continuous minutes.

i dont recall any games that have even attempted a lasso before
Well, in some videos its mentioned on how it works, hogtying criminals, and capturing horses. Although, wouldnt you just bring extra rope for criminals?
well i mean that i'd like it to feel unique. not like some redressed hookshot
if that makes any sense
I think I get you. Something a little more "organic" and involved than point-and-shoot. It's hard to say, really.
Something like having to perform a timed button press (or release) in order to cinch the lasso around a certain part of a guy's body would be interesting. Early to get it around their neck, later to pin their arms to their torso, or even later to rope his ankles.
I also wonder if there's other things you can rope and get actual interactivity with, like say a fencepost or a gate to a horse corral.
In general, multiplatform games tend to be made first for the 360 and then ported to the PS3, so the 360 tends to be a liiiiittle bit better, but not usually anything you wouldn't notice unless you were doing a side by side comparison.
Well, we do know there was a slightly better version of GTA4...and I want to say the 360 had the upper hand there. Of course, it's been nearly three years since that came out, so maybe they've polished up the engine so that some of the console specific issues were taken care of.
I really hope they led development on PS3, just because it ends up being better for both systems.
I don't think so. I'm fairly certain they lead with 360. At PAX, that's what the tech demo was shown on, it's what most of the magazine screens have come from and for some reason, I seem to think that all the gameplay videos shown so far were pulled from the 360 version.
Also, I believe they're using the same engine from GTA 4, which lead on 360.
Yeah, you're gonna be real disappointed then, Talon. Hogtie badguys or catch horses, that's pretty much all it'll do.
Dont forget lassoing fools and dragging them twenty miles through the desert behind your horse.
Maybe if you time your turns right you can have them bash into various things.
Rope up some passersby and go jousting in multiplayer.

So we're all assuming that the lasso mechanic is physics based and it will be possible to do crazy shit? Or has this been confirmed?
Because "This game lets you lasso horses and hogtie people" sounds to me like a quicktime event, a context sensitive thing or, at best, a ranged item on a timer that either "hits" or "misses."

This isn't Just Cause 2.
I think we've all just canceled our preorders and decided to wait for a rope simulator.
EDIT: For the folks who haven't actually seen it, check out the Life in the West video in the OP. Marston is shown roping a horse, and it looks pretty straightforward. Aim at the horse, press a button, and now that horse has been lassoed.
Don't really know where it goes from there, though.
EDIT: Ceno, Life in the West Pt. 2 doesn't work.
PROBABLY THE LAST EDIT: ...but Life in the West Part 2 does have a glimpse of Marston roping a dude. Again, not very involved. Marston throws the rope at the guy's torso instead of over him so that it may fall around him.
Because obviously GTA4 on the 360 was terrible and rockstar has no idea how to make games.
No no, the other way around. I'm hoping the PS3 version doesn't have any issues like I've heard GTA4 did.
The only issue the PS3 version of GTA IV had in comparison to its Xbox 360 counterpart was that it ran at a lower resolution, 640p instead of 720p. This gave the PS3 version a slightly blurry look when upscaled to large resolutions. It's not that noticeable, though, unless you put the two side-by-side and look for it. Other than that, the two were pretty much on par graphically.

Frame rate was a bit iffy too. I've just recently delved back in to the game, I originally had it on PS3, got bored of it and sold it. I've picked it up agin on the 360 and it runs considerably better. I mean it ran well enough on PS3 but it was clear it struggled at times.

That I didn't know. And that sucks! I hope this game is much smoother. Perhaps that's why they haven't been showing off the PS3 version, though? I hope not.

Pretty as this game is it's nowhere near as complex (visually) as GTA4. You don't have hundreds of pedestrians milling around, cars flipping over or huge high-rise buildings. I can't imagine the engine struggling to cope even if it hasn't had a bit of an overhaul.

Nothing with continuous gameplay yet. Everything we've seen so far is in-game, but it's all chopped up.
Heh, no kidding.

Though perhaps I ask too much.
Take Bayonetta for instance. The PS3 loading was truly awful. Not sure if it was fixed, but it was a thing for awhile at the very least.

For the man who wants every last bit of RDR content, here's Gamestop's commercial for the Deadly Assassin outfit.
I still say it looks dumb.
i mean, its not the best thing ive ever seen, but then (statistically) most things arent
edit: And man, that announcer was trying way too hard.
I'll see you yellow cowards on the high plains.

Man I so want to test this because even if it fails something funny will happen.
I'm liking this idea. Or imagine the reverse, riding after a train in order to save somebody from tumbling off a cliff.

Remember in Batman:The Dark Knight, he uses that plane to yank him out of the building.
That.
But with rope and a bridge.
