There's nothing that says fictional sea people need to be one skin color or another. If you made Batman black, you'd have to acknowledge the fact that the murder of a prominent black family in a city 30 years or so ago isn't exactly the same as the murder of a prominent white family, but with Aqualad skin color is really just a cosmetic issue. You can change his skin color without changing his character.
But how does this help? I mean, isn't that worse than using a character people might not be as well known? You're basically saying that DC's choice is "Well we need a black guy on the team, oh well let's just make Aqualad black I mean who cares as long as we have our ethnic spot covered.
At that point it just seems really condescending and, I don't know, pandering. Like, hey, we don't have any actual black characters for the team, so we'll just make a useless character black because whatever.
It's not pandering if they put more thought into the character than that. Jon Stewart in JL could have been pandering, but he ended up being one of the more nuanced characters in the series.
Well really, I guess there's no judgement until the cartoon actually airs, but it just seems like they could have used a different character rather than just making an established character black. But if they sell it well, then fine I guess.
And I am definitely no expert on DC's Atlantis, but aren't mermaids descended from the classic Atlantis? If that's the case, then why would they have racial offshoots? Wouldn't they all basically be greek-ish or something?
I mean, they're fucking mermaids, it's not like it's a huge deal, I'm just curious.

See, every time Aquaman or his ilk show up they ruin things. This is why he should stay dead. I fully support Atlanteancide in the DCU. General Lane, don't shoot the Kryptonians, point your weapons down!
And I can't find the post but someone made a point about John in Justice League earlier in this thread about how they went a bit over the top in trying to say "hey look we have a black guy on the team!" as John was the leader of the Justice League and a focal point of most of the episodes
It was "over the top" because they used him a lot? What?

No no (I need to find it, it's in this thread I'm going through the pages), the post described the way he on the team as if they (the production team) were trying to say "We have a black character on our team, look!"

Or they were trying to say "Here's an interesting character and interesting stories about him."

Hey, all my friends are black! I'm black! My wife is black! I voted for Obama! It's cool!
And John wasn't interesting in Justice League. You could tell Phil Lamar would have rather been on Mad TV instead of voicing a guy who's two ring constructs were "giant green cylinder" and "giant sphere"
The only good person on Justice League was Flash, and then he disappeared because his voice actor (Luthor on Smallville right?) quit.

JL/JLU
Batman Beyond
Batman TAS/TNBA
Superman
Static Shock
but only because I haven't seen too much of Superman and Static. I've seen a bunch of Batman episodes but I've seen all of JL/U and Beyond so I put them higher

like we just need to establish here that Phil Lamarr did like doing John. If he didn't like doing voice work for the DC people, why would he keep taking more of it? You know he voices Static too right? And that he did like an entire episode of Static voicing ENTIRE SCENES himself when GL guest-starred? John's constructs were a reflection of the personality they gave him on the show, that of a someone with a strong military background, who tends to use his ring in an efficient manner, rather than a showboat-y one. And his background was one of the most explored in the second season.
To think that Flash was the best person, jeesh, and this is coming from someone who loves the fuck out of Flash, I have his goddamn logo tattooed on me. But at the start of JL they didn't know how to use his personality or his powers. In the second season, he developed more, but honestly the focus of the show was elsewhere at the moment. He didn't start to shine until JLU and no Michael Rosenbaum never quit the show, they just used Flash in fewer and fewer episodes. It tended to serve the greater purpose of the threat to kill off the character and bring about the whole time loop, cadmus stuff that Question was ranting about I mean do you even pay attention to things you watch?
When he did come back during the second season of JLU, it was still Rosenbaum voicing him.

This seems appropriate then

Is that like Mutant League?
And I haven't seen any Brave and the Bold episodes outside of a few clips, but Oswald from the Drew Carey show voices Batman and that is cool.
And I didn't care for Batman Beyond because they screwed over Dick with that show.
Would you?
