You know, I feel a lot happier about Evans taking the role than a bunch of the guys who were first up for it. Still not entirely sure but it is a tough casting choice to make and Evans, at least with a shave etc, will look the part.

Im still surprised by it though, its kinda like Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool and Green Lantern. Just seems weird.

But at least maybe Topher Grace can now be Spider-Man.

There's a bit of a difference between playing characters in different movie franchises and playing two characters in the same franchise. That would be more like Chris Evans switching from being the Human Torch to the Moleman.

I just see them as the live action incarnation of these characters. Playing the lead in Batman and Terminator? Ok.

But playing the lead superhero in two comic based franchises? In this case 2 from the same universe? Seems weird, to me at least, I mean look at how hard theuninformed found it to differentiate Batman Begins to the previous 4.

But at least this means F4 is dead.

Eh, it seems that FF is going to be rebooted which probably means different actors anyway. Even if it doesn't, there's pretty much no chance of Captain America and the FF ever overlapping as they're being done by different companies, so it's no biggie for me.

I don't really see a reason to put superhero movies on a separate pedestal to other sci-fi/fantasy movies, where there is tonnes of cross-casting.

And honestly the F4 movies are best forgotten, though there were some good bits (mostly the bits with Chris Evans, anyway).

I didn't hate them, but I didn't love them either... I'd love for them to do a reboot like the Norton Incredible Hulk, FF style. Just skip all the intro rubbish and go straight into the zany imaginaut fun.

Chris Evans accepts 'Captain America' mantle (exclusive)
Chris Evans will play Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America.

Sources tell us the actor has not only accepted Marvel's offer, first detailed on Friday, but that the dealmaking moved so fast it's now all about dotting the i's and crossing the t's.

Marvel would not comment on the development, and CAA, which reps the actor, declined comment.

Evans was offered the role in Marvel Studios' production last week, but there was some question of whether he would accept. Factoring in to the choice was the fact that Evans played Johnny Storm, the flame-covered superhero known as the Human Torch in Fox's "Fantastic Four" movies. Was he ready to play another superhero and take on the trappings that come with such a high-profile part?

Evans took a few days to think it over, and once he decided he was willing to wield the shield, negotiations moved quickly over the weekend.

If this is true, Evans is really going to have to step up his acting for this. I'll consider his role in The Losers as his audition for my approval.

He does at least have a good physique, though I wouldn't have said he was anywhere near big enough, Cap should be a Conan-era Arnie freak.

I disagree, Captain American shouldn't be muscled like a weightlifter/bodybuilder he should be hard and lean like a soldier. Whenever you see pictures of the guys in special forces they aren't mountains of muscle their just in really, really good shape. Thor is a built like a brick shithouse, Cap is an agile, powerful combat machine.

Bart Sears gets a pass on his sometimes bulky art because he has a hella American name. Bart Sears, he sounds like someone Davey Crockett would look up to.

That's the way I want. Roth wasn't about to win any bodybuilding contests but he looked hard and fast, which is Captain America to the core. The ultimate soldier.

Chris Evans was pretty good in Sunshine, and the only person to actually attempt to fit the role in Fantastic Four so I am pretty okay with this.

I just hope like hell that Chris Evans can do Captain America without making him into a smug douche, because how the hell would that work out in the Avengers movie with Tony Stark being the witty bastard he is.

The Avengers script is based off of The Ultimates - in which Captain America IS a smug douche bag. An awesome smug douche bag, but nonetheless.

I wouldn't call him a smug douche, but he's definitely way more quippy then his normal universe version. I mean, he did drop a tank on the hulk and kick him in the junk.

I think it will be more like the Ultimate Avengers movies as regards to Cap's personality, he's less sanctimonious but still retains that air of being the "good guy" and isn't a silly goose.

How is Ultimate Avengers Captain America racist or jingoist? Sure he goes into Wakanda in the second one even when they say no. But honestly, that's their own stupid mistake and Wakanda weren't exactly playing ball when it came to whole "defense of the world" thing. I really can't see the racist thing at all either.

Has Evans been in anything that required him to convey gravitas? I like him, but every role I've seen him in thus far has required him to be a combination of cocky, smug, and bewildered; but I've really only seen him in Push, Fantastic Four, Cellular, and Not Another Teen Movie.

Maybe he'll pull it off, but I'm not sure I see Evans as the kind of guy that can convey the humility and leadership that I think are at the core of Cap's character. Plus, this dude's going to be front and center in the Avengers franchise, and have to compete with and pretend to lead the likes of Sam Jackson, Robert Downey, and maybe Ed Norton. And I'm really not sure he's a good enough actor to do so.

    Wait, what?

I quit reading Ultimates with #6 of the first volume, but I've read enough of the preview pages and stuff highlighted from the book to where this would have been a bigger thing throughout the online comics community.

As for jingoistic, that's fine, it's what I expect from someone called Captain America (and I would think it would be a smart move to put Union Jack in the Cap movie as a supporting character in maybe some battle, a nice way to make the movie more international which is one of the big things these days)
