I actually have to recommend a book I just read but that came out a couple of weeks ago. Wolverine: First Class #19.
There's no way on Earth I'd have read this book or even given it a thought based on the fact that it's got Wolverine in the title and the cover was pretty uninspiring to even catch my eye. But then I had someone tell me that it was written by Peter David and drawn by Dennis Calero and was actually mostly about Kitty Pryde. And then I was intrigued.
It turns out that it was a great book. Especially Kitty being awesome and the last page reveal of a special guest star whose reveal I was actually excited about in spite of the fact that there is almost no way I'd have been under most any other circumstance.
I think I have to give my MotW to The Astounding Wolf-Man. Which had a werewolf wearing a mecha suit, and fighting something that looked like it stepped out of Shadow of the Colossus.
It was ridiculous in all the right ways.
Wow, I thought I was the only person in the world still reading Wolf-Man. It really was a fun issue this week.
my store had a small selection of the upcoming Blackest Night corps rings. i think i saw two of each so it must have been an advanced preview.
the requirement to get them is that you must buy the blackest night tie-in associated with that ring when it comes out, which is what i expected. they have my name, so i'm getting the rings!
Yeah, I saw that they sent out samples to retailers that were doing it.
I'll have to see if my usual store is gonna have them or if I'll have to go to another store next month
We got a set at work, but my boss won't let me have them. He's probably going to ebay them. :x
My MotW was the House of Mystery Halloween Special. I don't read the ongoing, but I will now.
I don't get all the Prof X hate. I've always liked him. Sure he subjugated a new life form and got a team of mutants killed but just about everybody on the X-Men have done something evil in the past - or at least something ethically questionable.
Hey, I don't hate Professor X, I just like seeing Cyclops refuse to let someone try to pull rank on him when he's leading his own team. Xavier doesn't run the X-Men anymore. It wasn't his call to make that they should go whack-a-mole on Magneto. My constant concern with the X-Men books is that they'll keep backsliding into the same tropes and resurrected villains and it'll be "X-Men standing in a high techy room<-->X-Men flying a jet<-->X-Men punching Mr. Sinister/Apocalypse/Stryfe/Whomever" forever. I am a big giant fan of them being integrated with the daily life of the Marvel universe in any way possible.
That and Magneto as Cyclops Fanclub President is an interesting angle. I don't know if they will do something good with this or if Necrosha will turn into Lame Zombie Story #5million, but the "I'm Malcom X, you're Dr. King, Jr., and both of us are are having an argument about the past and these dudes are the new face of mutantdom," could be a storytelling step in the right direction.
And now I'm getting optimistic about an X-Men story arc so I'm setting myself up for heartbreak and traced porn ass, so I should stop.
My moment of the week was reading the first Madame Xanadu trade. I was tentative when I bought it but I'm really glad I did now, it's fantastic. I'd go so far as to call it my favourite Vertigo book at the moment, though I'm only reading Madame Xanadu, Fables and House of Mystery at the moment (I intend on reading Jack of Fables too, when I've got a couple of trades to read through).
There wouldnt be an X-Men or a coallition of people to fall behind Scott if not for Xavier.
If we are going to torture the civil rights analogy to its furthest extent; if Prof X is King, Magneto is Malcom X, then Cyclops is Obama. He wouldn't exists without the former, but he is the guy in charge now. Its his call to make the decisions for whole of mutantdom, not theirs.
Its one of the things I think Marvel can do better then DC is to show the changing of the guard. Old heroes grow old and let the new generation take over. Cyclops used to be the young pup leading the field team, he isn't anymore. Artificaly keeping him a young pup would only ruin the storytelling eventually.

The sky was full of stars, every star an exploding ship. One of ours.

Madame Xanadu is great stuff. It's probably my current favorite comic right now.

While I don't think I read past #4, I actually did like his art in it. When he posted the pictures like a year ago or whatever, I didn't like it, but it looked really nice in Wednesday Comics. Less like stylized Poser models than that Deadpool scan looks
I think it's kind of unfortunate that Baker, whose work has always been extremely kinetic and unique, has decided to start tracing CGI models, making his stuff look both stiff and very boring. He went from working in a style that few other people could really imitate or match, to doing something that pretty much anyone with a little knowledge, skill, and time could do.
But then, he's stated that his traced style is much quicker, and has gotten some editors excited about his work, so I guess I can't really fault him for going with it.

God I love the Punisher.
Sure, the art didn't really match the dialog in that scene, but hey. Professor X got lippy, then he got told to simmer his ass down. I chuckled.
Also, good Magneto is not as good as bad Magneto.
