I enjoyed hellgate, but it was really a ranged game, the meele was a joke especially with orb bosses. The worst bug was when they made it so you randomly couldn't see your co-op partners that destroyed the player base.

One thing that does puzzle me is that, while the vendors inventory seems to change and improve every so often, the vendors at Fyrestone always tend to offer poor product. Given that it's the main town (in at least this first part of the game), I would think you'd want the best items for sale there. Or at least upgrade the health kits and ammo upgrades.
I haven't gotten past fyrestone area, I think there are different quest hubs later though? Its not all just treking back to fyrestone.
Yeah, there are different places to score quests. They seem to be localized in 3 or 4 different areas so far.
So anyone else see skags just attack bandits? I went back to the windmill area in the arid badlands and the nearby skag pit had attacked the bandits. And the best part was, the skags were winning.
I've led named skags i've had to kill to bandit camps before. Then i sneak away and point a bazooka in their direction. Its pretty great.
I like how enemies don't have the "ALL ON THE PLAYER!" style that other games do. I mean a bandit wouldn't like a skag anymore than I do.
Also anyone who did the badlands recording quest from the board, man that bitch was crazy.

Oh I figured that much, it's just that for the amount of time that you do use Fyrestone (through level 17 as of this writing), the vendors there just offer oddly poor inventory. It's just strange to me - you have to go back there to check the bulletin board and such, but you can't re-stock med-kits or get ammo clip upgrades there since they never improve past the initial "minor" offerings. Just strikes me as odd.

As far as I can tell, the more hidden/protected the vendor, the better the loot it sells.

I buy ammo there, that's it, and only if I'm low when I visit (so like a 50 50 chance at level 17).
I do love the little mini woot thing the vendors do, the arena vendors have offered some choice selections. And by arena I mean the npc one, I haven't done the player one.

it could be they're trying to approach the diablo method of items/buying.
like when you're lvl 15-25ish in diablo, you'd be in Tier 2 and all weapons in the main town would be Tier 2?
Anyone know what the +2 Team Scavanger things do for a hunter with a character mod on him? I mean, obviously it has something to do with finding items, but it doesn't really say what. Does +2 mean better items, or more items?

It seems to be level based (the gear is level appropriate), it's just crappy gear for the most part. 8 white guns, two green, done. But if you wander around and find an out of the way vending machine, it'll have 8 green guns and 2 blue.
One thing I will say, the raks are annoying bastards, not hard to kill but a swarm of them can put you in a hurt locker if you don't spot them ahead of time.
"Ok skag I've got you sighted and I'm sending you to the big bitch pen in the FUCK FUCK RAKS SHIT!"
At level 26, my shields fully regenerate before the rakks make another run.

Man I just ran around circle strafing psycho midget guy, only had to use second wind at the end due to a lucky punch that sent me into some rubble. I mean his head was the size of a fucking adult skag, it was headshot city in there.

I fought my first named rakk late last night. I was doing some quests and it popped up over the waypoint for one of them. I figure it's a good time to try out my nifty new electrical rocket launcher with the 5 round clip.
I didn't realize what "+500% burst size" meant. Holy crap.
The rakk dives, I level my weapon and fire. 5 rockets fire in the second after I pull the trigger and all of them impact this dude's face. Half his life is gone. Then the blue numbers just start boiling off of him (5 missiles at x3 electrical) and fries before he finishes his attack dive.

Which psycho midget guy? I've fought several named psychos, one of whom was actually a midget.

Ah. Yeah, that guy wasn't too hard. I like that headshots basically guarantee elemental damage. My new (as of 5 levels ago) revolver that does x2 explosive damage makes for some awesome headshots.

That spoiler was a pretty epic fight.
I am loving this game so far, rolling with a hunter, and making bloodwing a death machine. A corrosive, loot producing death machine.
Also found a scavenger class mod that pretty much maxes out all of the loot related skills (I already had 3 points in each). Does anyone know if you can exceed the max skills with class mods and the like? Enemies are already dropping way too much stuff, but I am always open to making them drop more stuff.
Had a lot of great fun playing with PA guys last night. Sorry to anyone that I ignored, as I was in a full group. We were just steamrolling through quests till we got to Sledge's lair and got promptly beat down. The weapons we got through the night were pretty great, one guy got a shotgun that basically created some sort of electrical-temporal-vortex of doom. We had two Bricks and to see them both 'zerk out coupled with the hilarious sound effects were priceless...not to mention turn everything into a red paste.
The game really ramps it up when you're in a party though. It's not uncommon to run into several groups of adult, elder, spitter, corrosive or wahtever skags with a few badasses with them. I think the group that finally took us down was just inside Sledge's area we had a group of badass psychos, and badass bruisers just start punishing us.
I like how respecing is pretty easy. I was going for a turret spam type build but when I play more tonight I might go for more medic abilities.

Someone may have already pointed this out (I was out to lunch, catching up on the thread):
There are bounty boards dotted around the badlands, it's not just in Fyrestone. Look for the !'s on the map.
Yeah, shotgun accuracy is ass. They're practically melee weapons. You can't hit reliably with most of them (that I've found) at 20 feet. But at melee range, holy crap do they shell out the damage.

Not true, shottys are great you just need to find the awesome ones. You clearly haven't. I have an acid spewing monster that churns out daamage of 48x4. It also has a zoom, which sounds stupid but actually works really well for relatively far opponents. Obviously its a short range weapon so its an added bonus to be able to take out folks from a slightly further distance.

There are also a LOT of quests not given by bounty boards. But yeah, once you move out of Fyrestone the quests basically move with you. With a few exceptions that will make you backtrack for the quest itself, though usually not to get it in the first place. You won't have a reason to go back to Fyrestone unless someone specifically tells you to.

Two-shotting badass bruisers is really great.
And pretty crucial when your gun only holds two rounds.
We were sent a review copy of Borderlands to check out for the VGAs, and after an hour or so of play I went over to my computer and ordered that Borderlands four-pack. I decided then and there that I wasn't going to deal with any "should I buy it" or "I don't know man" bullshit from potential comrades. I'm just going to drop a Steam code in their laps, and then gesture in the direction of the wasteland. I didn't really understand that the PC version was coming out later than the console iterations, even though it said as much on the screen, so now I've got several days to itch and sweat while console players learn what I already know.
I know they're real busy over at Gearbox, but a demo would go a long way. I suspect that most people won't understand what they've accomplished here, which is to make good on Hellgate's promise in a kind of Weird West milieu. Thief: The Dark Project was sometimes called a "First-Person Looter," though it is even more apt here - God help you when the shakes start, and your awareness narrows to a dark funnel that only slight variations in statistics may penetrate.

Also, for those of you who were with me on the "what the fuck does daze do?" bandwagon, I have an answer: exactly what it says.
When you smack a mob with daze, this glowing orange, cloudy particle effect goes off. It's extremely obvious when a target is dazed. The speed and accuracy reduction is very substantial, and the daze lasts for a good 10-15 seconds.
A control-heavy Lilith might have some of the worst damage output in the game, but I'm doing it anyway, because holy shit do I love me some daze.
I think the melee daze skill is a mixed bag, though. Generally, if something's nasty enough to be something you want to daze, you don't want to get close enough to melee it. I can see it being awesome for melee-heavy builds, though.
