We were sent a review copy of Borderlands to check out for the VGAs, and after an hour or so of play I went over to my computer and ordered that Borderlands four-pack. I decided then and there that I wasn't going to deal with any "should I buy it" or "I don't know man" bullshit from potential comrades. I'm just going to drop a Steam code in their laps, and then gesture in the direction of the wasteland. I didn't really understand that the PC version was coming out later than the console iterations, even though it said as much on the screen, so now I've got several days to itch and sweat while console players learn what I already know.
I know they're real busy over at Gearbox, but a demo would go a long way. I suspect that most people won't understand what they've accomplished here, which is to make good on Hellgate's promise in a kind of Weird West milieu. Thief: The Dark Project was sometimes called a "First-Person Looter," though it is even more apt here - God help you when the shakes start, and your awareness narrows to a dark funnel that only slight variations in statistics may penetrate.
I agree with his sentiment, but I think word of mouth is going to power Borderlands just fine. A demo would always be nice for any game, but I don't think BL is going to suffer because they haven't released a demo yet. I've already gotten several of my "Halo buddies", who play nothing but Halo/CoD/TF2/et al, to commit to picking it up...so yah...empirical, but I think it's happening quite a bit.
Yeah, shotgun accuracy is ass. They're practically melee weapons. You can't hit reliably with most of them (that I've found) at 20 feet. But at melee range, holy crap do they shell out the damage.
Not true, shottys are great you just need to find the awesome ones. You clearly haven't. I have an acid spewing monster that churns out daamage of 48x4. It also has a zoom, which sounds stupid but actually works really well for relatively far opponents. Obviously its a short range weapon so its an added bonus to be able to take out folks from a slightly further distance.
As I pointed out about a page back, I've got a blue shotgun with +4 projectiles and 4x flame with a 2.x scope on it. It can two-shot a bruiser my level at close range. It takes 10-15 from medium range, though.
Some shotguns fire in a much tighter radius, doing far more damage. Others fire in a wider radius which makes them useful at close range but bad for a little further out. It's much more noticeable when you have two different shottys with the same zoom levels.
You bum my government job had everyone on meebo and shit.
You SHOULD get on AIM more often though
I'm on AIM most of the time my PC is on (which is mostly all the time unless I shut it down at night).
I just simply can't login to AIM while at work unless I go to a "break" PC.

So I've got my brother lined up to get this as well, but stupid Paypal won't have the transfer finished until Monday. Anyone looking for people to go in on a four-pack but not in a hurry to do it? I'm fine with being the one to purchase the game or sending money for the purchase, but for me sending money would have to wait till Monday.
Anyway, if someone wants to get in a four-pack sooner rather than later, PM me and I could grab it today and distribute the games immediately following. If they'd rather wait a few days, they can still PM me and I'll get the cash to them when Paypal clears. It'll be a US purchase and I'd only need two more people since I've got my brother in on it too.
How does the four-pack work on Steam, anyway? Buy the pack for yourself and then send three copies out or do you buy it as a gift and gift one of the copies to yourself?
EDIT: Oh shit, Assassin's Creed PC for 5 bucks. Curse you crazy Steam deals!

Speaking of word of mouth on Borderlands.
My best friend and I have pretty much equivalent taste in games. We like them. All of them, for the most part. RPG's, FPS, you name it. That said, we do have tastes, and we're both recovering WoW addicts, and both have too much time invested in to Halo 3 and TF2. So he was grilling me for info about Borderlands, and I'm going on and on....and he stops me and say "So, what you're saying is, they basically made a game that might as well have been designed using feedback directly downloaded from our minds". He hit it spot on. That's why I'm so addicted to this game. It's like Gearbox said "GnomeTank, what would you like in an RP shooter?"..."Well Gearbox...I'd like real skill based FPS combat, none of this dice roll shit, I'd like WoW style skill trees, and loot, lots of loot...oh, and keep the loot colors exactly like WoW....purplez = phat epix lootz"....and shazam, Borderlands.
oh, and keep the loot colors exactly like WoW....purplez = phat epix lootz"....and shazam, Borderlands.
Yeah, I laughed out loud when I saw that in the game. I knew about the skill trees, but I didn't know they copied the rarity color scheme exactly from WoW.
I'll poop myself if/when I encounter an orange.

OK, thanks. I would've felt pretty stupid if I bought the four-pack for myself and Steam is all like "Congratulation! Install all four copies now?" and I couldn't send them out.

My first orange was kind of meh.
Then again, it was a sniper rifle, which I'm not using.

Wow, you found one already? What level are you, if you don't mind my asking?
Though I know that's largely irrelevant; I found a pretty badass blue-quality shotgun last night, but it's requirement was level 25 and I was just level 13 at the time.

I'm 26 or 27 (I can't remember off hand). I don't remember what level it was, but I couldn't use it yet.

This happened to me in Arid Highlands. I opened a weapons cache and it was full of level 22-23 gear. I wonder if this is a bug? Not that I cared, I just sold it all off for big money.

I found a orange Cambat rifle and it really sucked. Like really really.
although I also found two Gold Sniper rifles that were for level 13 only (I was level 7) I kept those fuckers and once I got to 13 I laid waste to everything in my path. They we're totally worth keeping.

Gold? Gold is not a loot color that I am aware of? It's White -> Green -> Blue -> Purple -> Orange. If you meant the combat rifle was literally orange (as in, on the screen), that's not the color we mean
Gold coloration is a brand thing, I think. Dahl, maybe?
Maybe, yeah sorry. The thing was Purple. And badass.
It had a shock / stun effect that sort of threw everything around the hit everywhere as if a bomb went off.
It made short work of Super Psychos and those berserker guys.
Hmm. So I just now bothered to read the system specs for the PC version and noticed that my box is just below the minimum recommended threshold. Several of my friends are also in the same boat. We all own 360s. Our idiot fourth coop buddy who only owns a Wii is insisting that we still get it on PC anyway because we'd be excluding him or some shit if we got it on the 360 instead.
Grr.

Here's how much of a genius I am; I didn't figure out until this morning that you're supposed to select and use the BDU upgrades.
I had 4 of them in my inventory, and it just kept getting smaller (less available slots). I was very confused. And stupid.
I did that with the backpack upgrade. I was trying to buy more meds and it kept telling me there was no room. I'm like "fuck you there's no room, I just got a backpack upgrade".

So upgrade?
As posted in the last thread, 4GB of DDR2 800 RAM goes for $50 right now. A CPU faster than the recommended? $50 again. A video card that'll run this at 1920x1200 on high settings smoothly (based on other UE3 games)? Less than $150.

How far below? It's on Unreal Engine 3, it should scale down fairly well.
Alternatively, tell your buddy to stop being such a knob and get a 360 so that he can join in on the fist-pounding Bro shenanigans that come with owning one.

Well, no, technically other people are stereotyping you, but that bracelet's definitely something they're keying in on.

I need to play some PC games tonight to remove the taint.
