I don't think Klyka and I lost a single match, did we? Oh wait, our very first one playing as drowning doom on Feeding grounds.

So we went what? 11 - 1? Pretty good if you ask me. More of you guys should join in some time.

Klyka, if you don't mind my asking, where do you live, geographically?

I'm curious in regards to latency, as I'm living in the midwest of the states. Illinois specifically.

damn... atleast it doesn't say kill, if that makes anything better.

Except for using a buddy, the only thing i can think of doing is sacrficing your base.

In other words, let a whole bunch of headbangers and/or other melee units tackle your base, with you and your painlifter parked on the side aiming at them.

That's what I've been trying. I got the bleeding death and baron ones like that vs. normal difficulty DD. The problem is using a rock crusher or pain lifter vs. DD is ridiculously dangerous and if you don't get their first wave of grave diggers, they don't build T1 units again. On the difficulty below normal, the enemy seemingly never builds more than 1-2 squads of anything and will tech up to t4 and barely have any units.

I guess I can try and trade them. If anyone needs the do X with Y achievements, my GT is in sig. I'll be driving around looking for my 3 missing serpents for a while :(

So was anyone else completely unsurprised when Yahtzee pretty much hated the game? Or at least disliked it or something?

I'm starting to wonder why I think this game is absolutely fucking awesome when so many people just plain don't like it. Every reviewer/critic/journalist/webcomic artist that I admire or hold respect for tends to hate this game, and finding myself in a gaming minority like this when I see such a brilliant game in front of me is beginning to be irksome.
Do you play a lot of videogames? I haven't played much of anything since the PS2/Gamecube generation, aside from Rock Band. So for me, I think I enjoy Brutal Legend because it doesn't automatically coalesce into some preconceived notion of genre.

But for people like Tycho and pro game reviewers who constantly play games, I'd imagine that their preconceptions are ossified by established genres. Tycho, for example, insists it's an RTS game and was frustrated when he tried to play it as an RTS game. Maybe it's because I read the comic (and Schaffer's response) before I picked the game up, but I don't think this would have even occurred to me.

I do think the game could have done a better job focusing the player on the action aspects and simplifying the RTS aspects—it could have been "blended" better. But I wouldn't be surprised if the game appeals to less hardcore players with less expectations of how an RTS "should" play.

Actually, I play a lot of games. I actually attempted to try to beat 37 of my games for this current school semester, but I got sidetracked by RL and then by Brutal Legend. I consider myself an avid gamer.

Which makes me even more confused as to why I fucking love Brutal Legend. It seems other people who have a background similar to mine dislike the game, but I'm totally sold by this metal masterwork.

It's not just the presentation I love either. The multiplayer in my mind is brilliant. So yeah, I'm confused.

    Maybe it's the laser panthers.
    Houn wrote:
Yes. People don't like Brutal Legend because it's hard to classify. That's totally it.

The largest complaint by far for the game was it's stage battles, i.e. multiplayer. That's my favorite part of the game. This is what worries me. Am I that out of touch or are a lot of people not looking at this game in the right way.

Admittedly, a game should be show it's grandeur and glory from the get-go and not require the player to dig into the game to find its brilliance. I think Yahtzee nailed that part, and to me it's Brutal Legend's real flaw.

This game doesn't present itself well, in game and out of game. The advertisements and trailers don't really show you the core of the game (barring the multiplayer tutorial, which is presented as a fucking side item), and the game never flat out says "don't hover around the battle and do nothing! Wade into combat and DOUBLE TEAM!" The game doesn't hint at what it takes to be good, which gives the illusion that there's no depth to the gameplay. There is, and it's awesome.

Y'know what I hate? That when Battlezone came out, reviewers flipped the fuck out, hailing it as the birth of a new genre. But now when a game has RTS elements in it, everyone loses their fucking minds and it's a cumbersome snoozer.

I just got some help and finished all the kill X with Y achievements.

If I played long enough, it is entirely possible that I would have hit 15 units with one agony ball.

There is NO WAY that ANYONE would grind 20 enemies with the rock crusher in any MP scenario. That damn achievement is designed to be traded.

On the subject of this game and enjoying it, I find it interesting that Shadow of the Colossus has been mentioned...

Personally, I love this game in spite of its flaws and the fact that I can never seem to find a multiplayer match (try living on an island in the pacific and getting a decent ping to anywhere). Hand's down one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had this generation - before I've even attempted multi.

I also love ICO, but it reminded me of this quiz I took a while back which tried to determine where I got my satisfaction from games, or at least what parts of a game I seemed to enjoy the most; I came out as a Seeker primary -
You like finding strange and wonderful things, or finding familiar things.

Your behaviour often shows curiosity, sustained interest, and a love of stimulating your senses.

Favourite games of Seekers surveyed so far include Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Grim Fandango, Okami, Shadow of the Colossus, and Zelda .

ICo and Morrowind probalby make my top 5 games of all time. Shadow of the Colossus, if I hadn't had such a horrible time with technical difficulties, well up there. Grim Fandango / Monkey Island 2 also highly placed.

And I'd have to say this is knocking on the top 10 somewhere, or at least, the single player is. I certainly loved exploring the world - found all the NPC's in the epilogue, 100% completion, still drive around just looking at the world and reminiscing.

Anyway, the mention of SotC and this as being favourites just jogged this from my memory, and I was wondering if that might be part of why some people seem to have a much better time with this than the general gamer populace; it's a flawed gem, but for some the parts it gets right (and it gets them very right) more than outweigh the little nitpicks on gameplay or pacing.

I hope this can give people who haven't seen much of the "RTS" elements of the game a better idea of how Stage Battles work.

I take it you're not a fan of death metal?

There's a reason bands refer to them as "vocalists" and not singers.

Eh, people with an open mind can enjoy that song.

And that "random note vomit" is actually under-charted :?

Why are we talking about Rock Band? MORE BRUTAL LEGEND NEEDS TO BE IN THIS THREAD!

I have yet to do any match other than 1v1's and that makes me sad. I don't like how you have to invite friends to get multiple players in one map (because none of my friends seem to play Brutal Legend when I do--they all like Borderlands :x), but I guess at the same time if you don't have a microphone things would start to suck (everyone would try to build the army and chaos would ensue).

Oh yeah, a couple of videos of my match as Drowning Doom versus a Tainted Coil player. Even with my crappy skills I pretty much own the guy (except he kicks my ass when dueling each other). Not exactly a great show of skill (of which I have yet to really see on YouTube), but hopefully y'all will like it.

Holy shit that match was insane. They would of had that match if they actually ATTACKED with their Razor Girls, but instead those chicks just sat at their stage as defense.

I think there just was some strategic counter we weren't thinking of though. Maybe if we had a full troop of debuffers (3 Brides one or two Organists and a Derigible) with a Treeback and some Reapers/Broods with us and Veil of Deceit'ed our way there we could of had that. That and we probably should of waited for our armies to be fully massed, I know at some points we were just sending a few units and still had some lagging behind. Either way, I never knew that Razor Girl spam could be so insane D:

    EDIT-
