in all seriousness, all i am saying is that metallica is largely awful, and a central inspiration for many things that you would probably agree are awful

the grimdark seriousness of contemporary metal is abhorrent, and metallica is a large part of what legitimized and popularized that mindset (although certainly not the only one, nor even necessarily the driving force in metal subculture at the time; perhaps the most popular one outside of the subculture)

Most modern -core bands derive more inspiration from early 90's MDM (At The Gates, DT, In Flames... who got a lot of their inpiration from BM) than 80's thrash. If you think Metallica was the main inspiration behind the modern metal mindset, you really do have no idea what you're talking about. Being the most popular band in a genre does not make them the most inspirational.

Henry Rollins has more influence on them than Lars Ulrich ever did.

I still don't really like them.

How are the new podcasts? I haven't gotten them yet.

There hasn't been a transcendant moment like Jerry's consecutive ones so far, but they're pretty entertaining. The first three sessions are mostly roleplaying and then they raid a mansion in what I think is Thunderspire Labyrinth.

I also love Mike's D&D posts on the front page. The way he approaches each session and goes to town on the physical setting and atmosphere is really nice.

that really depends on what you mean by the "modern metal mindset." musically, i was referring to metallica inspiring bands like linkin park and other pop-metal; i wouldn't make the claim that they are a huge factor in musically inspiring "real" contemporary metal. in terms of the metal zeitgeist though, the cultural values and attitudes, you can't ignore the influence of one of the most popular bands in the genre. they are not alone but they are a massive presence. i get the impression that a lot of contemporary fans aren't even necessarily directly influenced in their attitudes by metallica; it's more of a ripple through two generations.

    Night dude.

Also, Scott Kurtz's comment to Wil Wheaton regarding the traveller in the podcast is choice.

I think people are talking about Metallica between And Justice For All and the latest album, which is silly because Metallica ceased to exist for that period in time and did not release a single song.

And I would also say that modern pop metal is far more closely related to glam/hair metal than metallica.

    I'm replaying through Twilight Princess.

    And enjoying it a LOT.

I had recently replayed through Wind Waker as well.

I'm a big Zelda fanboy, though.

    Hm.

I'd say double hookshot. Sky Temple I believe it is called.

    Also fun boss battle.

Hmm, that one was pretty cool, but I'd have to say my favorite was the Arbiter's Grounds.
