The original D&D podcasts by Gabe and Tycho grabbed my interest and got me interested in the game, initial interest with my group of friends fizzled out though and left me wanting to play but no one to play with.
Which sucks.
When Tiamatz was taking applications for his Scales of War campaign there were a lot of people that missed out and had wanted to play.
Which also sucks.
So with that in mind I'm going to try my hand at DMing by running a Keep on the Shadowfell game so that more people get to play, due to it's ease of use for new players/DMs. The party size will be six players so as to allow more people to play. I'm not going to stop people who are somewhat familiar with Keep on the Shadowfell, since I've listened to the podcasts too but please have your character act as though they have no knowledge of the area. Once we get through this we can always continue on another adventure if people are up for it.
I
will be giving priority to people who have not played a PbP game before since I'm pretty sure we had a half a dozen who missed out on Scales. Feel free to enter even if you have played one before, on the understanding that first timers will be given first picks. You are limited to two character submissions and each a different role, but you can draw from any of the source material available provided it currently is in the Character Builder. The only class I'm taking off limits is Hybrids, all races are fair game with the exception of those from Monster Manuals provided you can explain it away. Psions can be submitted, just don't be a dick with them and turn it into something broken.
So, basic synopsis:
- You may submit up to two first level characters. Each must fill a different role (Defender/Striker/Controller/Leader)
- Your character has 100 gold and a level one magic item to begin the adventure.
- You must be able to post once per weekday.
- Priority will be given to those who haven't played a game before, then those who are not currently playing a game.
- Once you've made your character with character creator, upload it to Orokos. or convert it to a .pdf file and throw it up on Google documents if you an account.
- Rolls will be used from either Invisible Castle or Orokos if IC is down.
But mainly the idea is to enjoy ourselves! The PA community is always good fun to deal with, so ribbing, creativeness and terrible puns are always encouraged. To keep things interesting, experience gain will be accelerated until reaching level 6.
Get thinking! Character submissions will be open for about a week, unless I get a flood of them.

My two characters in search of a home right now are:
Nex, Changeling Assassin
William 'Chocolate' Harris, Gone Bard
Their equipment at present lacks a Level 1 Item; if either gets in, I'll give them a +1 Implement to use.
I'm not a player in any PbPs, though I am a DM for the Vathirond game who'd love to be on the other side of the screen (though this is a PbP, I'm on a laptop, and it has only one screen, but I suspect you catch my meaning).

Intro:
A chill wind blew across the land and whistled through the trees to either side of the old dirt road. Moonlight flickered through the branches momentarily, only to fade as wispy clouds covered Sehanine’s face once again. A lone figure walked through the darkness, soft robes like the night sky fluttering in the breeze. He stopped and looked about as another wolf’s cry echoed through the gloom. He quickened his pace, pulling his dark cloak about him to ward off the cold and muttered silently under his breath.
“You’ve brought me to this desolate land, My Queen, all that I ask is your leave to see why before you call me home.” One alabaster hand absent-mindedly rubbed the amulet that dangled from the iron chain about his neck as he walked, his eyes scanning the horizon. Nothing, just as it had been for the past three days. He crested a small hill and his hand fell silently to his side.
In the distance his eyes spotted the distinct flickering of lights. A town possibly, at least an inn he hoped. The wind kicked up, catching his cowl and pulling it back. The light of Sehanine flittered down from above, bathing his alabaster face and jet-black hair in its soft glow. Lustrous eyes as black as coal watched for a moment, judging the flickering of light before the moon’s own drowned it out. Definitely a town. The harsh call of a bird in the trees startled the man as it took flight, and he grasped the amulet that hung about his neck tightly, giving a silent prayer in answer to the raven’s call. He took a deep breath, pulled his hood down low about his face, and began the long walk down the hill into town.
Pelor’s light had begun to crest the horizon as the buildings of the small town came into view; still the traveler wandered on wordlessly. He squinted in the light, his eyes more accustomed to the gloom of his homeland than the intense brightness of this accursed land, yet he pressed on, pulling his cowl lower to shield his eyes.
Voices came to his ears, indistinct as they were carried on the wind, but human. The chatter of early risers echoed in his ears as he approached the still-closed gates. A guard called out to him as he approached, and the man stopped.
“State your name and your business in our fair town, traveler,” the guard said as he stifled a yawn.
Two alabaster hands reached up, pushing back a dark, velvet cowl to reveal to the guard what lay underneath. The man’s pale white skin and monochromatic black eyes obviously took the guard aback, but the human merely coughed and fidgeted with his sword hilt as the traveler approached. The early morning sun glinted brightly off of the silver studs that pierced the traveler’s cheeks, the fine chain suspended between his left nostril and ear wavering slightly as he gave a small, polite bow.
“I am called Aiden Darkbroaugh, and I merely seek a small respite in your fine town before I continue on my journey,” Aiden said in a quiet voice.
Marek Wellington, Human Fighter
It was basically his routine. Every day or so, he'd go around town looking for odd jobs that would get him just enough money to make it through the day (or the next one too, if the pay was good). Usually it was some sort of gig that involved heavy lifting, which he was quite good at. Sometimes it was bouncer work. Or helping out at the woodmill just outside of town. The various employers around town knew he worked hard to earn his wage.
At night, he'd hit the taverns, where he'd spend most of the money earned during the day. Ale or spirits, it didn't matter, as long as it had a punch. But he didn't just go out to drink a few and then pass out under the table. Oh no, he also went out looking for a fight. And on most nights, he'd find it. What is there to say? He liked to scrap. Nothing like a good fistfight to get your heart pumping.
Because of his tendency to end up in physical confrontations, he was also no stranger to the local jail and the town watch. He couldn't count how many nights he'd spent behind bars. One day, after being thrown out of jail in the morning, he saw a poster on a nearby wall.
BE A MAN! IN THE MILITARY!
Are you MAN enough to join the MILITARY?
Join your comrades and fight valiantly beside them!
Unsatisfied with the way things were going, he made the first good decision in his life. He decided to join the military. He spent a few years there, and while he did acquire discipline and skill in martial techniques, his wild streak was still present. And so one day, he got into a fistfight with a superior officer, which earned him a hasty discharge. Lucky for him though, he had spent just over 4 years in the military. After serving 4 years, you got to keep your armor and weapon, which was a very good benefit compared to the otherwise meager pay.
Now, Marek is back on the streets, only this time armed with his training and the sword he got to keep. He's thinking of guarding caravans maybe? Or being a sort of mercenary? He's yet to decide. But right now, what he needs is a strong drink.
Victor La Roche, Human Sorcerer
They hated it. Did they hate me because I had it? Maybe, a little. But it's not like my gift was a choice. It's not like I decided one day, hey, I want to just randomly shoot flames from my hands (and burn yet another priceless carpet).
Haha, one time my parents had some other nobles over for a fancy dinner and I managed to almost burn down the whole mansion by setting the drapes on fire. Needless to say, those people never came over for dinner again (or tea for that matter). But boy was my father mad! I half expected him to kill me right there. You could tell that he wanted to beat the crap out of me but my mother didn't let him. He's just a boy, Cedrick! It's not his fault! He can't help it! She always did stick up for me when my father got mad, but she was almost as bad as him sometimes, although in a more passive aggressive way.
After some time, messing with them just sort of became fun. Maybe it was standard teenage rebellion, but the more they told me to suppress my illness (that's what they called it, can you believe it?), the more I got a kick out of just burning stuff up for no reason. Anyway, I decided to just go it alone after finishing school. My father wanted me to be a good noble like him, to go out and chat up the other rich people (fancy a popkin? Tra ha ha, smashing!) and just be a good example of the La Roche family and carry the lineage. Well, father, no. I don't care for your money. I'm out of here.
So I went out to create my own life. I'm fairly competent, and with my gift, I think I can achieve great things. You know, bootstraps and all. They'll see.
I must warn you, I'm not a very good roleplayer or writer. I've only ever played 4 games of D&D(None were PbP). I know the rules pretty well, though.

Elaia, Tiefling Invoker
I've never been in a PbP D&D game before, although I am involved in a PbP game of 3:16 Carnage Amongst the Stars here. I have played a fair amount of D&D before, though. Posting frequency won't be a problem for me.
*rolls the dice to see who makes it in*
Well, there goes the Dragonborn Warlord.
Reita Kilvas, Tiefling Warlock (Ranged Striker)
When Reita hit puberty, she began to hear dark voices in the back of her head. Slowly they twisted her, made her into a more... agreeable person. Once she became an adult, the source of the voices was at last revealed. Beings of darkness had decided that she had potential to obtain great power, and offered her a pact. By this point, she was more than happy to accept...
She is not heartless, she merely has an inherent disrespect for those that uphold the law. She is witty and manipulative, but overall a cheerful person. Just don't get in her way if there is power to be obtained.
Mika Sorvas, Human Paladin of Avandra (Defender)
Three years later, she found herself wandering through a desert running dangerously low on water. She climbed over a tall sand dune and finally spied an oasis, but she collapsed before she could reach it. She was sure she was as good as dead.
However, she woke up sometime later at the oasis. After drenching her thirst, she saw an Eldarin angel. The Eladrin told her that he was a servant of Avandra, goddess of change, freedom, and luck. The angel told Mika that Avandra had taken pity upon her, and had spared her life. Mika knew that the gods were fickle beings, and asked how she could repay the goddess. The angel told her that all that she would have to do is worship the goddess. Upon consent, a sandless wind seemed to blow through Mika, and it was like opening her eyes for the first time.
Now she wanders the countryside, hoping Avandra will lead the way.
Jindal Meriel, Elven Archer(Striker)
Malorian Al'deloth, Eladrin Swordmage(Defender)
Been gaming and playing D&D specifically for years. Since the old Red & Blue basic D&D boxes. Relatively new to PbP games, and new to 4e. But I'm dying to get involved.
Here are my submissions:
Thrall Skullsplitter: Half-Orc Rageblood Barbarian
(Striker)
Thrall Skullsplitter was born as a result of a Orc raiding party in his small village. His mother dying in childbirth and his farmer "father" doing no more to raise the boy than he did for his pigs. A result of the endless childhood taunts and bullying was Thrall's hair trigger temper and quick use of his fists to squelch disputes. Growing big and stong in his older teen years, a group of older youths pushed Thrall too far during a woodcutting excursion. In a rage, Thrall planted his axe into no less than three skulls that day. Without looking back, Thrall fled his village for a long road of adventure.
Thud Barrelhead: Dwarven Battle Cleric of Moradin
(Leader)
Thud Barrelhead was raised in a brewery. Not just any brewery, but the justly famous Barrelhead brewery. His fiercely devout mother imparted a great faith in Thud, and his ale brewing father instilled a hard work ethic, responsibility to his clan, and a love of good strong drink. Thud merged both his passions, greatly impressing his parents by brewing up curative potions based on his fathers ales. Thud had free reign to both his mothers small shrine, and his fathers test kitchens. Thud's experiments in Holy Drink came to a devastating end one cold winters morning, when the most recent concoction fermenting in its vat exploded! Fully half of the Barrelhead brewery was engulfed in flames. It was a sad day for Dwarves from sea to sea. It took them 2 days to put out the fire. In shame and embarrasment, Thud devoted his life to Moradin, and pledged not to return home until he could repay his father in full for the damages caused, and with a perfected new product that any Barrelhead would be proud to put his name on, and throw down his gullet.
(Pictures are linked to the character's theme song)
Aradace Palar, Dragonborn Paladin
As a young dragonborn, Aradace was encouraged to find his path in life and to follow it with his whole being. He was instructed by his parents and the elders of his home village to live with honor and to help those who cannot help themselves. As he grew up, Aradace came to realize that the best way for him to aid others was to be as strong, intelligent, and devoted as he could possibly be. He learned about the different gods and their commandments from the elder cleric, and has chosen to follow Kord. In his studies of the thunder and battle god, Aradace knew that he had chosen his god wisely: his unwavering devotion to bettering himself and proving his strength and tactical ability in battle were all that Kord asked of his followers.
It was during last week's evening prayers that Aradace's destiny was laid out before him in stark contrast to the tangled mess of a future that had plagued him previously. One of the clerics approached him and spoke to him about a rumor of a group of cultists headed for the town of Winterhaven. The cleric further explained that, through his research, the cultists are reportedly performing some sort of unholy ritual in the area. Aradace doesn't wait for the cleric to ask if he would look into it, but instead volunteers to travel to Winterhaven and see if there is any truth to these rumors, and if need be, to stop the rituals.
Wander, Human Swordmage
"No, I do not know where I have come from. I know only where I am going. I head to Winterhaven. We have been over this." Wander sighs as he replies, yet again, to your questions. He stares into the distance, as if looking for answers to questions he isn't even sure that he knows. "The only past I have is that I awoke with a sword in my hand and a burning power in my soul. That is my magic. I go to seek knowledge of my power, to perhaps learn that which you wish to know."
The man shakes his head and looks at down at the ground for a moment before meeting your gaze once more. He stays silent and allows you to stare into the depths of his thoughts, the darkness of his memory that he tries to unshroud even as he stands before you. "Is your curiosity satisfied yet? I have answered and answered, each time the same. I am hiding nothing."
That's what we're going to try and avoid. I check the boards a couple of times a day so I can update the maps fairly often.

Scosglen, Samurai and Bladecruiser, I'd like to have each character be a different role if possible. I know you each had one of the defenders set up as leaning more towards striker but I'd like to keep submissions to one of each role rather than one of each class. Feel free to change one of the entries if you like.
The party set up will most likely be something along the lines of:
1 Defender
2 Strikers
1 Controller
1 Leader
1 Leader or Defender with Striker leanings
Background
The one time Corellon seemed to smile upon Veris' efforts, when his fingers moved with the expected grace, when he could put not a foot wrong, was when he stole. In a village as poor as his, thievery seemed like no blessing at all. With no desire to bring shame to his parents, but unwilling to smother the one gift he possessed, Veris took to the road. He roamed north, into the Nentir Vale, to see what his fortunes held. Soon after his arrival, the gem vaults of Hammerfast found themselves pilfered of their choicest baubles on more than one occasion. After one particular attempt upon the storehouse of the Stonecutters Guild blew up in his face, Veris was forced to flee with little more than the clothes on his back. He recently found himself in Fallcrest, relatively confident that he's shaken his pursuers, and ready for a new challenge.
I recently joined the forums and I've been dying to get into some PbP, but no luck so far =(. I'm able to post several times per day.
I'll likely submit another character later on, but if its between the two, I'd like to play the rogue.

I've never played D&D, but same thing happened here, the podcast got me interested. And I don't really know anyone IRL who wants to play
Character - Foreblack, a Teifling Warlock
When are submissions to be judged/picked/made into an amazing wine?
If you download a program called CutePDF and install it, when you go to choose print you select CutePDF and it'll let you save the file as a .pdf.
From there just upload it to any site or google documents so I can see it.
I said a week initially but we've had a lot of submissions already. I'll probably close it off on Tuesday once everyone's had a chance to apply but might have been busy over the weekend.
Despair Foreblack: Warlock Extraordinaire
Backstory and possibly a doodle of foreblack to come.
Is he wearing the Emperor's New Clothes?
I've never played D&D before, and also never PBF before. I've listened to the podcasts, however. And in a sudden surge of madness and fiscal irresponsibility I bought PH and PH2.
Edited to add:
I'll also throw in Mindartis, Eladrin wizard.
I'm able to post multiple times during weekdays.
I'm praying the pants aren't invisible.
That said, here are my characters:
Alek, Human Inspiring Warlord (Leader)
Baradin, Dwarf Battlerager Fighter (Defender)
Thanks for your consideration. I actually only registered for the forums in the first place to get a chance at this after my friend told me about it, so here's to hoping
When I first made Jabez, I was like "That would be a cool, but odd combo. A dwarf all about death, and hater of the undead." But now, since the Raven Queen is the most popular god out there, and everyone seem to be her followers now, I just tired of playing him. I think that everyone loves the Raven Queen (emos) and Dwarfs make kickass clerics with the whole Heavy Armor thingy.
Well, the party is only getting one magical item each to start with, so I couldn't get the invisible shirt AND the invisible pants. But it'll be fine - when Foreblack is bloodied he takes a minor action to remove his pants. Just part of his job
Aelar, Elven seeker
Ever since then, though, Aelar has felt more connected to the world around him and, shortly after taking up the bow, he discovered that he could channel the energies of the world into his arrows and cause all sorts of mayhem. As he grew in power, so did the amount of trouble he could cause, until eventually, he was "encouraged" to seek his fortune in the wider world...
And because you're looking a little light on Leaders too:

As for this game, Kelor... I give you 2 :^::^: .
My two submissions are a brother and sister.
Khameel Katydid Human Warlord
and
Kouri Katydid HUman Druid
The children grew up with only each other to count on. Khameel became obsessed with history, especially that of great generals and brilliant military strategists. Kouri often ran from home to explore the nearby canyons and oasis' of her desert home. They fought often, but stuck up for each other, because they knew no one else would.
Khameel was shipped to Brightenese Military Academy. He made few friends, especially once his low birth was known, but excelled in his studies. He began to drink early, and made a sullen, bitter drunk. His expertise in strategy and quick-thinking moved him to the top of his class. He served as a field sergeant in the military for 4 years; he hated the bureaucracy of the military and was glad to leave at first opportunity. He took a few guard jobs, but fell in to adventuring as a way to call his own shots. Khameel isn't personable, but his presence and talent is evident to all who serve with him. He is primarily self-interested; he doesn't go out his way to help anyone without reward, but he has little patience for tyranny, cruelty, or strict rules either. He picked up Dwarven from his military training and often finds himself more comfortable around dwarves than humans, though they do admonish him for his preference of wine to ale.
Kouri left the familiarity of home in the company of the old crone. They left for an oasis many miles from her home. The oasis was home to all manner of exotic flowers and animals, and Kouri learned that the old woman was named Alissoun and she was a powerful druid who watched over the deserts. She explained that she saw the potential for greatness in both Katydids, but that Kouri especially intrigued her because she had same mark on her eye that her own mentor had. Kouri trained for years to master the druidic arts, but her restless nature didn't make her well suited to stay put in the small oasis. She left to pursue her greater destiny. She hopes to learn what her great destiny is. Unlike her brother, she is a champion for the greater good and she will drop whatever she is doing to help anyone in need. Like her brother, she is headstrong and distrusts authority. Alissoun taught her Elven to help her deal with other druids out in the world.
Kouri and Khameel try to meet once a year or so and send messages to each other fairly often. They often butt heads quite a bit when they do meet though.
