maybe i shoulda decided to go to graduate school

maybe i wish i had done a lot more research in my college career and been more scientific and made better use of college but i didn't

now i'm just applying to corporate jobs like a putz

i really regret not finding an academic passion and putting effort into doing that
just now i'm starting to think of things that would be cool, but look i'm a senior already, it's too late

i wish i had done some more stats stuff and done some NLP stuff and gone and done some content analysis research, i find that interesting, but i wasted college

    what a waste

    of college

i better get a job at one of these places

    Thanks Moonkus.

It looks like I get to start university, start working towards my GRE, and start researching graduate programs all at the same time! FUCK YEAH!

thanks for the tips, munkus, ill have to remember that by junior year

One key is that you want to have enough time to take it again before you apply in case you get a bad score.

If you keep taking the GRE do they only view your most recent score, or take them all and average it, or what?

    Depends on the school.

Some require you to list every score, some only care about your most recent one, some will average your scores together.

    Here's a FAQ for you Cal: http://www.testmasters.com/faq-gre.html

Graduate school is fun. I get to teach undergrads and get paid. Plus I get my own desk and workbench.

Also there's the risk of getting silicosis and subsequently lung cancer due to my research on silica nanoparticles.

How did you get waitlisted with a 170?

Your guess is as good as mine. I heard from a lot of other people who didn't get into places they were expecting to because of the economy; I guess the idea was that a lot of people didn't like the looks of the job market so there were a lot more applicants. Then far fewer people made it in off the waitlist than usual because people were hanging on to the acceptances. I'm trying to take the explanation with a grain of salt though, I don't like to feel like I'm passing the buck. I'm getting more recommendations this year and rewriting my personal statement and working on extra projects at the law firm I work at; not sure what else I can to to increase my chances.

The LSAT is a percentile based system though, so if you scored a 170 that means you're in the top 96% of all applicants.

    I know that 95% starts at 168 and 55% is around 155-160.

The LSAT grading system is so retarded, it could only have been designed by people who never took math past high school.

ETS will send them all of your scores from the last 5 (?) years, and it's up to them as to how they interpret it.

GRE Math (Quantitative in their language) is easier than SAT math, but the Verbal (Qualitative) is much harder. GMAT Quantitative is a real mindfuck, but GMAT verbal is really easy.

As for me, I'm applying to the Evening MBA program at Georgia Tech since I work for GT and it's free if I get in :winky: (since it's night school, I still get my full salary too). My GMAT score (700) and UGrad GPA (3.57 in EE) are above average for the program, but now I'm trying to figure out which professors to try to use for LOR.

I'm a junior undergrad right now, I've already got a good idea on what I want to go to grad school for and where to apply, I just have to get around to the GRE process, making a personal statement etc. and then hopefully I have a good gpa come graduation senior year. My cumulative right now is a 3.16, major-related courses is a 3.9... hoping the cumulative goes up since it's major-related courses from here on out.

Oh and i should probably try and do an internship related to my academic interests.

I'm going for a history masters. they don't give a fuck about my quantitative scores.

Still, I got a really good verbal SAT score (and my skills have DEFINITELY improved since then). We'll see.

An example of something an English grad student did that I thought was impressive:

she was my English professor's student, so I heard about this from him. Apparently the most popular plays in the 18th century were written by women, and they had been almost entirely forgotten. This isn't tokenism -- the grad student looked up the box office receipts to prove it. These were romantic comedies that ran for as long as a hundred years. These made Cats look like a seventh-grade drama production. And some of them were borderline-feminist; at least, there would often be a witty, beautiful female protagonist getting her way through cunning and teaching the men around her a lesson or two.

So basically a good grad student in the humanities can redefine the way we think about something. From now on, the 18th century in English drama, instead of being sort of a blank spot that nobody writes about, is now going to be known as the Era of Female Playwrights.

    This is great stuff, thanks.
