We arn't a hive mind or anything, people here have the same differeing views as they do there.

Thats why you are given time to stalk your santee, find out what they like and buy accordingly.

But yes sweets and foods that are local to you are always good :P

Yes I'm aware that Americans have developed individuality, I was just looking for general suggestions.

I just buy up one of everything I like from the chocolate bar section of my local supermarket and use it instead of packing foam. Any chocloate you send from here will blow their minds. Have you ever eaten American chocolate? If this is what independence bought them I think they paid too high a price :P

Kinder eggs are a good novelty as well as their crazy FDA won't allow non-food within food.

I'd just like to point out that in Canada, this is not the case.

Not only do we have Kinder Surprise eggs, we have specially themed Kinder Surprise eggs.

That's why this year, my Santee is going to be receiving some fantastic Barbie Kinder eggs.

I included quite a few of those last year for Secret Satan, the receiver liked it, so there might be more coming my Santee's way :D

So if I, a filthy American, get to buy for somebody from the UK, can I purchase stuff from amazon.co.uk so that there is less chance that it falls in the ocean? And maybe cuts down on shipping costs for me which means more money for presents for them?

Or is amazon not that cool yet?

I'd just like to state ahead of time that whoever has me as their Santa may need to either put up with my gift in several parts, or may need to just put up with a gift that gets sent in the second week of January.

The flipside to this is that it would be sent in the second week of January because that's when I will be returning from Japan...so you can either hope that you get your full present earlier so you don't have to wait, or you can hope that you get it later because you are tantalized by the thought of getting something hand carried from Japan. Which would you rather have?! :)

if its not from japan, im throwing it away anyhow

I assume they don't sell them here because some kid choked on the toy.

I do recall getting candy with toys in them as a kid though. Maybe it's a more recent ban, or perhaps I was made avail to an off brand of Kinder eggs?

I remember there being some sort of hollow chocolate candy (possibly an egg) with something inside, but I don't think it was a toy. I know they make them now with M&Ms sometimes.

My personal favorite chocolate candy is cadbury creme eggs. I can eat a 4 pack of them in a single sitting. Probably more if I was ever able to find them at a decent price. The week after Easter is amazing for finding stuff on ridiculous clearance. The caramel ones are good too, but the regular creme is still the best.

Not for everyone. I really like the idea of a gift that's been chosen and packed by someone specifically for someone. Last year, I got werehippy an Obama doll that came to England from the US just to be packed in a box with the other stuff and sent back over the Atlantic.

I completely understand wanting to cut down on shipping and import tax, and that's fine, but I find it just a little impersonal, and gift-giving shouldn't be. Even if you've picked the best gifts ever, receiving it in a nondescript box packed by someone else seems a little off to me.

Dunno, didnt sound douchey to me. I kinda agree though, it's rather impersonal, and this way you can't add any nice local sweets or something. I understand not wanting to do that though, it is rather expensive. I know that I won't do it though, I think it's just more fun to do it personally.

Dude, I know that personally made stuff MIGHT be more awesome, but the difference in cost and risk is really big. I'm really torn. I could make something really cool (I don't think I'm awesome enough anyway) and pay A LOT to ship it from Rio, only to have it disappear along the way... That would be so terrible.

Or I could pick some really nice stuff from amazon that my Santee would really love and ship it from inside the States.

I think it really comes down to how much care you're putting into it. Yes, Amazon makes it easier to say "fuck it, I'm just going to ship you every book in the Twilight series", but you can also come up with a gift that's equally (or almost as) awesome and thoughtful as something homemade.

In my mind. Secret Santa is about giving to someone else. So I will really try my hardest to get them a great gift that I think they'll enjoy. Or some random crap that I like and I think everyone else should like. So on a personal level, I really want to actually get them something to send them. (Although I've been in that situation where I didn't have all the money that I wanted and saved on the shipping with amazon too.)

If I get anything back, at all. (except bleach... books are kinda gay too). I'll be happy. I've never been disappointed with my SS gifts, regardless of whether people bought stuff from my amazon wishlist, or sent me a care package from across the ocean. But that's just a cherry on the cake of giving to someone else, seeing what everyone gets and taking part in the entire event.

I finally got around to signing up... things aren't so great, but I can still afford to spread a little cheer around without putting myself into debt or anything. This is my favorite time of year in G & T, so there's no way I'm missing out.

Re: The whole shipping debate... personally made stuff is cool, true, and so is getting to sample local goods or whatever (I'm a big chocolate fiend, myself... sorry, just providing a little stalking info for my Santa should I get in :P ). But if shipping ends up being a breaking point for somebody, I wouldn't want them to bankrupt themselves just to make someone else happy. I'm just happy to be here, and the main point of Secret Santa for me is the "Santa" part, that and watching everyone get neat stuff and posting pics about it. If it's easier/more affordable for someone to order from Amazon or whatever vs. dealing with overseas shipping, and that's the difference between them participating or not, then that's fine with me. Especially in this economy.
