Remember your favourite 8-bit RPG/Adventure games? Well get ready to re-imagine them in 8-bit HD 3D... or something.
New Trailer March 25th, 2010Official North American Trailer by Atlus
3D Dot Game Heroes is a game by FROM Software (makers of the surprise hit PS3 Exclusive - Demon's Souls) and should be out now in North America and Europe/Australia for a ridiculously affordable price, compared to most PS3 games.
From the music to the character designs, it invokes inspiration from popular 8-bit games like Legend of Zelda and Dragon Warrior and heck, even a couple of townspeople look like Mario and Luigi from the original Super Mario Bros. There's even Spelunker!
Wait, who?
How many Zelda references are there?
The game also has an awesome character creator (see screenshots behind spoiler tag) that you can use to share your 3D 8-bit mans online. It's not done as simply as it could be, like say the method in which LittleBigPlanet does it, but you can save your creations to a USB storage and upload them through your PC. This is called
The Hall of Heroes and is the official online hub to up/download your 3D creations!
Instructions for how to install your new 3D characters to your PS3:
http://www.3ddotgameheroes.com/hallofheroes/3dmodeltransfer.html
In order to transfer characters to your PS3, you will need a USB storage device (USB flash
drive, USB portable hard drive, etc.) that your PS3 can recognize.
1. On the root of your USB drive, create a folder called "PS3" if it is not already present.
2. Within that "PS3" folder, create another folder called "SAVEDATA" if it is not already
present.
3. Download a character from the Hall of Heroes. The downloaded file will be in a compressed
format with a file extension of .zip. After uncompressing the file, you will have a folder whose
name begins with "BLJM" followed by a string of numbers and letters.
a. Copy the BLJM folder and all its contents into the "SAVEDATA" folder you created in step 2
on your USB device. Note that you may copy more than 1 character folder at a time.
4. Insert your USB drive into PlayStation®3 system and turn the system on.
5. Go to the "Game" column and select the "Save Data Utility" icon.
6. Scroll to the top and select the "USB Device" icon.
7. Locate the character file you downloaded. The save file icon will have a picture of the
character on it.
8. With the file highlighted, press Triangle to bring up the file options.
9. Choose "Copy".
a. If you've downloaded multiple characters, the "Copy Multiple" option may work better.
The character is now ready to be used in 3D Dot Game Heroes. Next time you start a new game
or continue, select the "EDIT DATA" box at the character select screen. A list of all your custom
characters will appear, including the ones you've created yourself as well as those transferred via
USB.
Alternatively, you can view the custom character by selecting "EDITOR" from the main menu and
then selecting "LOAD" to bring up the same file list of custom characters. From here, you may
modify the character or preview it before taking it into the main game.
NOTE: The PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system does not support the NTFS file format found
common in the most current versions of the Windows operating system. To ensure compatibility with your
PS3 system, please use a USB Flash Drive formatted with the FAT32 file structure. For more information on
this subject, please reference

Love Your Blacksmith. He loves you.
Lots more media and game play in the spoiler.
Character Editor
The North American and European releases should have all of the base characters originally packaged in with the game, along with a bunch more like a pirate, ninja, or Santa Claus. Not to mention that there's already a large database of created characters from the Japanese release, which you should be able to download to your USB storage and port over to your PS3 seamlessly.

Gameplay Modes/Difficulties
In addition to the regular game, it will have 3 extra options. The classic "New Game +" exists for anyone wanting to carry over their equipment, gold and items to a new adventure. Presumably to pick up things you missed like quests and life/magic containers.
Then there's the "From" mode, which is like, hard mode ramped up to 11. More enemies, more damage, more fun for those who like that sort of thing. As From has proven themselves with Demon's Souls in the difficulty department, players should find this mode challenging, while at the same time fair. From mode lets you keep your money, Small Blocks and any adjustments you made to your weapons in the previous game, while starting you back with base health and mana and none of those swords you collected.
Finally, there's "Spelunker" mode. If "From" is an 11, Spelunker is over 9,000. This is basically the one-hit death mode, but you're given a brief moment of invincibility if you dash into a wall. Use those moments to help defeat challenging situations and bosses. Reserved only for the hardcore.
Mini-Games
Most games will have some side-quest or mini-games to break up the monotony of the main game. 3DDGH has 3 mini-games with which to amuse you when you don't really feel like saving Dotnia Kingdom (and you call yourself a hero?) Winning with high and perfect scores will result in Life Pieces and new weapons.
Dash Circuit: There's 2 courses to run - Block and Monaca. You receive prizes for dashing through the courses in as fast a time as you can manage.
Block Course: Under 25 seconds: 100 Gol.
Block Course: Under 20 seconds: 1 Small Block
Monaca Course: Under 80 seconds: 200 Gol.
Monaca Course: Under 60 seconds: 1 Small Block
Clearing Block in less than 25 and Monaca in under 80: Life Shard
Clearing Block in less than 20 and Monaca in under 60: Wing Sword
Blockout: Classic block-breaking action using your ball and sword/shield to smash the bricks at the top of the screen to clear the stages. 5 stages in total.
Beat all 5 stages: Life Shard
Beat all 5 stages without losing a life: Luck Mallet
Block Defense: This could give Triple Triad a run for it's money as the best mini-game in an RPG. It's Tower Defense! There are 5 main courses that are unlocked as you beat the game's dungeons.
Clear Road To Dotnia: 100 Gol.
Clear Cactus Desert: 200 Gol.
Clear Klovis Volcano: 300 Gol.
Clear Wasteland Oasis: 400 Gol.
Clear Dark King's Garden: 500 Gol.
Clear all 5 courses: Life Shard.
Clear any course without letting an enemy through: Small Block.
Clear all courses without letting an enemy through: Wyrm Sword.
There are also additional challenging courses with special rules offered in Dotnia Castle once you've cleared the game. These extra courses were originally DLC for the Japanese version, but come included in the NA/EU releases.
Clear any course: Small Block
Clear any course without letting an enemy through: 2 Small Blocks, and depending on the course, an additional permanent Block Defense adjustment, such as cheaper Tower costs.
And
finally, if you needed one last reason to go out and purchase this game,
Tycho loves it.
3D Dot Game Heroes has been good in this regard.
It's been good in many regards, actually. It's just good. This is probably mean, because it doesn't come out until April[sic], but God Damn. Games offer a broad spectrum of experiences, but it's rare (at least for me) for a game to produce raw delight, pure brain sugar. This must be how my son feels, powerless to avert his eyes from the taffy puller. Dot Game Heroes secretes globules of honeydew at regular intervals, and my proboscis is always at the ready.
It's candy, in essence: candy optimized by engineers for our distinct palette. 3D Dot Game Heroes also knows it's candy, and is constantly winking at the proceedings. The intro is a thing which is all smut and carnal machinery for devotees of the Adventure RPG form. An immaculate cataloguing of a world which has progressed through every ancient generation of gaming, it reveals a culture where 2D is the traditional way of life - one which converts to 3D by royal decree. I'd say that more or less captures the spirit of the affair. "Inside Baseball" doesn't begin to describe the fractal, perpetually unfolding nature of its appeal to the enthusiast gamer. It bookends the medium beautifully - it captures it, and does it honor.
EDIT: Updated with character porting instructions, updated Mini-games sections with rules and prizes.

How awesome are those Atlus preorders going to be?
Is there any hope in translation and release here? Or is this something I'll have to import?
this is ginormo sword but in awesome form
http://babarageo.com/flash/ginormo/ holy balls why do people know what i want
This. All of it.
Hopefully given Demon's Souls positive reception someone (hey Atlus :winky:) will pick this up for NA release.
There's no doubt that it'll be brought over eventually, last I heard several companies were competing for the rights to localize it.
Can't wait for the inevitable Atlus/Xseed localization.
I played this on my lunch hour today, thanks to you. Simplistic graphics, but that's part of the charm. OMG, enemies are one-shotting me left and right. And I think I made a mistake purchasing the Gauntlet. I can't spam my Magic Missile spell as fast now.

Yeah, the gauntlet makes it so you hold your sword out for longer, meaning you don't have to click as much; you found the negative side effect of not getting your magic as much.
Anyways, I'm really looking forward to 3D Dot Game Heroes, looks like a really good game just to have simplistic fun.
I would say this is definitely an homage to gaming of yore, rather than any kind of blatant copyright infringing, particularly given that each image alters from the original in small details.

Castlevania

Pretty sure this one is exclusive to PS3 only. Unlikely that's going to change if it sees European/North American translation.

God Fucking Damnit
Why would FROM do that? It's pretty unthinkable that Sony's paying them to make it exclusive and it's not like the 360 is difficult to program for.
First Afrika, then Folklore, then Gran Turismo 5 Demo, then Heavenly Sword, then Disgaea 3, then MGS4, then Haze, then etc, then Demon's Souls, and NOW THIS?
God damnit, PS3. You monster.
Man it's not my fault that there are maybe three exclusives (counting this) worth playing on the PS3 and that it was more expensive than a night of hookers and blackjack until like last week.
Oh, I know, I'm just teasing.
Thankfully it's only as expensive as a night of hookers, like the 360!
Wait, Haze? Really? I remember hearing buzz about it, but when the game came out, it was not all it was hyped up to be and died with a whimper.
Shame about Afrika. Gets released on the same day as Demon's Souls, but I doubt it's even managed 1/10th of it's sales.
Steam: TheArcadeBear
I dunno, I got a slim for a friend for 250 and a handful of really good exclusives...namely...
little big planet
metal gear solid 4
valkyria chronicles
uncharted 1 & 2
Ratchet and clank 1 & 2 (coming next week)
Demon Souls
lots of downloadables
There's a lot out there on the xbox360 and ps3. I think the only console that hasn't been producing really ridiculous titles at a high frequency is the wii, but even that is sort of a short sighted view with all of the wiiware games that are out + new releases this fall.
...sorry, what a tangent.
According to one of the comments in the link, the premise of the game is pretty standard fare. You are the hero(ine) charged with finding 6 people, and collecting 6 light orbs and must then defeat the Demon King.
The video doesn't show much new in the way of gameplay that hasn't been seen in other released trailers and clips. Admittedly, the segment in the dungeon is something I haven't seen before, but I'm sure it's pasted in from another video somewhere.
It's nice to see that the more that comes up about this game, the more excitement seems to build around it. Hopefully Atlus is aware of this and has a plan to pick up the rights to publish it outside of Japan.

Sony's Twitter announces 3D Dot Game Heroes will be definitely coming to North America. Mysterious developer not mentioned, but I'd bet the world we all know who it is.
More news will be forthcoming, most likely to be updated on Sony's Playstation Blog whenever they get details.

this has be very interested. I really hope it gets a US release.
As a PS3 owner, I'm glad to be getting a great looking exclusive.
This is a Japanese game being made by a Japanese company for (primely) a Japanese audience. The PS3 is pretty far ahead of the 360 in sales there so they want to sell a lot of copies without increasing the cost hence why it is not on the 360. Remember the US is always an afterthought for a game like this.
But Atlus thrives on this stuff. Not a surprise.
I....what?
Can this much awesome be true?
Now I just gotta' get myself a PS3 before then.
I should hopefully be done mucking around in FFXIII by the time this game comes out. I'll get it either way, but I'd rather not have my time divided.
