"Man you now what would be awesome? If there was a publisher with a great sense of humor that published awesome games at reasonable prices. That would be cool"

There's a lovely theme for this game up on the Japan PSN, if anybody's interested. It's not dynamic, but it's nice looking all the same, and it's free. I couldn't tell you how to get to it, since I mostly just stumble around until I find what I'm looking for or give up, but it's there! Somewhere.

I found this the other day too, looking for the Afrika Dynamic theme (which I never did find, but after finding this, I don't need anything else).

Sometimes you'll only move a couple of inches on the screen and BOOM, another loading screen. It is seriously annoying, and in the least the game could have given you an option to install it to the HDD.

Anyone else feel like if Atlus got enough e-mails about this concern, they might put an option on the disc to allow for installation? Atlus is usually pretty good about listening to it's ridiculously loyal fanbase. I can't really see this being a big issue or something too difficult to add.

    Oh, hey.
From Software's 3D Dot Game Heroes may be inspired by the 8-bit Zelda, but it's truly a modern game -- it has both patches and paid DLC. An update and DLC pack were set to be released in Japan on Christmas Day, but were delayed until sometime in January.

The free update adds a viewer for the loading screen images, hard drive install feature and the infrastructure to download the DLC. As for the paid content, one pack adds stages for the "Block Defense" minigame (basically tower defense), and the other adds downloadable character models, many of which can be downloaded for free from the website. In the case of 3D Dot Game Heroes, the idea of extra content is a lot more exciting than the content itself.

    So, there's that.

    Excitement is now higher.

This game looks like SUCH a rip-off of Zelda...
...and that could not make me happier. Truth be told, the Zelda games themselves seem as though they've been lacking something that made the early installments so enjoyable, and I think this may have it.

Sigh, now if only I had a PS3...

Well, I just loaded up the game again to install the update. The HDD was mandatory, but it did increase the loading speed by quite a bit. I'd say that it's at around 2 seconds between zones now. That's much better, though many people are still going to take issue with the screens popping up every 2 mins to take you out of the game.

It can't be worse than the goddamn Batman and Robin SNES game. Before that game, I'd never seen or heard of a cartridge game with "Now Loading..." breaks. Note the italicized word. That game had so many Now Loading moments and it wasn't like it was merited. It's a pretty awful game, and the loading sections just helped drag it down.

Isn't Eurogamer usually pretty tough when it comes to scoring? I rarely ever take video game reviews into consideration (movies are a different beast) and the Eurogamer one seemed to be mostly pleased with the game, citing too much similarity with Zelda and not enough innovation as faults. As we've seen with Darksiders, too much similarity to one type of game is not the worst thing you could ask for, and as long as it's done well, it won't get in the way of enjoying the game's complete offerings.

I'm still very optimistic about this game's release in 4 more months.

Yeah, I also like how they say there's very little handholding and all sorts of stuff to find if you wander off the beaten path. A 7 from Eurogamer is hardly a damning score.

    Euro gamer brethren rejoice!

Joystiq announced a few hours ago that 3D Dot Game Heroes will be seeing a European release, published by SouthPeak. No specific date was given, but they plan to have it in line with the North American version, so it's safe to say it'll be on or around the 11th of May.

I don't see which comments you're referring to. Honestly, they're tame compared to some of the comments I've seen there. But that's neither here nor there.

Anyways, that blog post is fantastic. I gotta say, Atlus is one of the few companies that's continuously entertaining on all fronts. Their blog stuff, the games, and their press releases; it's all always wonderful.

I'm excited and also kind of dreading 3D Dot's release. Excited for it, because it's going to be awesome, but dreading it because it's the furthest I've looked into the year as far as game releases. I know when it gets closer, I'm going to find out about things I've avoided.

The US Playstation Blog has a video post of a partial walkthrough of the first dungeon. It stops around the point where you get the Boomerang, and the quality of the vid is a bit tarnished by a glaring spotlight on the TV that doesn't go away until 2 minutes in.

It's nothing new, but if you want to see the game in action for more than 5 second segmented clips, have a look.

    Walkthrough.

Man, I'm glad you included the reference commercials, because the 3D Dot one was 10x better than it would have been otherwise. Also because they were pretty neat.

I'm now in the position where this is the only game on my horizon finally, since I have God of War 3 and Yakuza 3 and the other games I set out to get. It's kind of relieving and nice, since it means, I can actually play all these games I got from Christmas and Christmas 2: The Warfare-Dodgening before another one joins their ranks.

Updated the OP with details that have been known for a while, but figured it was best placed in the OP so it would be all in one section.

Tycho's news post today mentions his love for all news about this game, which is fantastic. He states that the game is coming out in April though, which is a typo, I think. All sites and media I'm looking at still show the NA release date as May 11th, with the Euro release a few days later.

Can't remember where I read it, but it's implied that the $40 price tag is the bonus. That's not to say the game will cost you $60 if you don't pre-order, but the bit I read about the price was merely suggesting that there wouldn't be any extras for pre-ordering. No strat guides, soundtracks, keychains or plushies.

I practically jumped for joy. I'm excited as all-out for this game. The nostalgia factor is probably the biggest reason, but that's irrelevant. It looks entertaining as hell, and I can't wait to try it. :)
