"Doug Lombardi had to take a swipe at the PS3 again, and I thought it was foolish," Pitchford told OPM, according to AnalogHype.
I read it the same way I read fanboys," he added. "Like there's a guy who bought the Sony platform and he's a Sony guy, so he decides he's going to spend a certain percentage of his time bashing Microsoft. And there's a guy on Microsoft doing the same thing. Those guys are childish and narrow minded; It's the same kind of thing.
I'm actually kind of mad at Doug because with the Orange Box, he said the 360 and PC versions are the good ones and the PS3 version is like the stepchild because some other developer made it. Well you Valve don't really think that, because look what you've done on the PC side. You've supported that, you've added all this content to Team Fortress 2, and you've left us hanging. It's hard to accept that genuinely, because I know the business, I know you guys make half the money on the PS3 version because you've got other fingers in the pie, and other developers getting a cut. It benefits you if nobody buys that, and only buys the PC version, because you make the most money. There's this underlying sleaziness.
I'm not sure how that is sleazy at all unless he somehow expects a company to give a shit about a version of the game they didn't develop nor make as much money off of.
Why the harsh words? After all Gearbox and Valve have been tight in the past, with the former developing Half-Life expansions for the latter. Pitchford tells MaximumPC that, even though he loves Valve games, "There's so much conflict of interest there that it's horrid."
"It would be much better if Steam was its own business," he says. "It's actually really, really dangerous for the rest of the industry to allow Valve to win."
"I love Valve games, and I do business with the company," Pitchford notes. Borderlands is currently available for pre-sale through Steam. "But, I'm just saying, Steam isn't the answer. Steam helps us as customers, but it's also a money grab, and Valve is exploiting a lot of people in a way that's not totally fair."
I love developers with a persecution complex that causes them to complain about vague unfair business practices that every single company in their right mind would probably do.
Well, just counting from the last few months into the next few:
September --> 428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya (You've probably never heard of it, but it got a 40/40 in Famitsu)
Tales of Vesperia
October --> Ninja Giaden Sigma 2
Bayonetta
November --> 3D Dot Heroes
December --> Final Fantasy XII
Janurary --> Last Rebellion
Not to mention New Super Mario Bros. Wii. But a lot of Japanophiles don't count Nintendo games for some reason.
428 (which I have heard of), Tales of Vesperia and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 are ports though (albeit they did redo a lot of NGS2), so I don't really think that list proves that much.
Anyway, to be fair to Pitchford, Valve have made some idiotic comments about the PS3 in the past but they haven't come from Lombardi, they've come from Newell (who I believe actually apologised for them at one point).
Pitchford's being a little too vocal for his own good though, probably out of some belief he may be able to pull in some L4D dissenters to pick up Borderlands instead. Probably won't work though.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
To all you people now just getting a HD console... what the hell took you so long? (But also congrats) :P
I had a Wii since launch, as the rest were outside my acceptable price range. $100 is well within my acceptable price range for a second console. Plus I only have a 32" SDTV, which makes 360 text in most games near unreadable.
I will be crawling through CAG trying to find a cheap Gold subscription if anyone is looking for me. :P
I don't think the 360 supports bluetooth. If you want the wireless headset, you have to get the one MS makes. ($45-60)
Ugh, I'll stick with a wired one. I think my friend has a spare he could let me use since I don't think the Arcade comes with one. It comes with internal memory now, right? No more memory cards? May pick one up to store my profile on so I can just grab it and go if I'm going over friends house for some Rock Band or something.
I'm so giddy with excitement it's funny.
Ha, welcome to the fold. I did the same thing when I semi-impulse bought my 360 Core when it was clearanced out at Sears for $200. You can easily find a used 20GB hard drive on eBay or somewhere for like $40 or $50 now, and it's worth the investment to try demos, install games and load up on XBLA games. Definitely check out Rez HD, Braid, Geometry Wars 2, Shadow Complex and Splosion Man, but there are dozens of great XBLA games and they all have free demos.
Also check out CAG, since you can usually find Live Gold subs on sale for $40 or even $30 at good times.
If Rock Band is even remotely a possibility (including The Beatles: Rock Band and its DLC...), then find at least a 60 GB HDD. I personally only have about 350 songs and combined with copying the game itself to the HDD, it's about 15GB. A 20 GB HDD only has a functional space of about 12 gigs.

Almost exactly the same story here. I got a Wii at launch, only have an SDTV of modest size, and thought that both the HD consoles were too expensive. I got a copy of Bioshock, which I was always curious about and it is indeed awesome, and a used copy of Dead or Alive 4, which is far less awesome but was very cheap.

Egads! Only 350 songs? That's considered few?!
Compared to some.
8-)
Maybe average, then. Keep in mind that's out of about 1000 total songs and I probably picked up about seventy or eighty during the recent Pepsi Promo.
Fils-Aime: New Super Mario Bros. Wii Will Outsell MW2 — with One Stipulation
That stipulation is, it'll beat either the 360 or the PS3 versions of the game, but not both, the Nintendo boss Reggie FIls-Aime told Gametrailers TV. Still, that's a hell of a Pepsi challenge.
Granted, New Super Mario Bros. Wii only releases on a single platform. Modern Warfare 2 is still expected to be an enormous seller for both Xbox 360 and PS3, take your pick. Fils-Aime is unfazed by that and sticks to his claim. "Absolutely. I say that unequivocally," he told GTTV. "Now, you've got to give me the entire holiday selling season. Right? So let's take it all the way through the January NPD data. Yes. I'll put that stake in the ground."
Or maybe he means it'll outsell Modern Warfare 2 on the Wii?
I always like these bets.
Do we think this is reasonable? Going through the holidays to January NPD makes it much more plausible, given Nintendo games' long tails.
It'll do well and all, but it has 'legs' rather then upfront, and MW2 has a fairly good chance of beating Halo 3 and being the biggest entertainment launch* ever.
Well there is a non zero chance that NSMB Wii will outsell the PS3 version, because maybe all of the shipments of NSMB Wii will be destroyed in some ridiculous manner.
NSMB Wii beat 360 MW2 over the lifetime of the product? Great chance. Over the holidays alone...hmm, it could happen.

*based on £ not individual copies shifted.
Based on cash totals? No question it will with all the special editions and PS3 sales. There is no way that won't happen.

NSMB DS outsold all platforms of CoD4 combined. Over the lifetime it will easily outsell a single platform if not all platforms. Outselling it in the first 2 months, however, won't happen. Nintendo doesn't hype their products that much.

Yeah. Outselling MWII on the PS3 shouldn't be that hard.

Oh I meant sales numbers as well. I was just clarifying the biggest entertainment launch ever thing.
So the 'bet' is NSMB Wii will outsell the 360 version of MW2 by the end of January? That seems likely. There are a lot of new PS3 owners looking to show off their new toy, and the 360 has a lot of high profile games this holiday. The Wii has one.
Edit: sorry, the 1up report said Reggie specified the 360 version. I still think the share will be split enough that Mario could lead the way, though.

It would have to outsell it by quite a few units for someone opposing to not be able to site revenue, since it has to overcome being $10 less MSRP and not having an additional $Texas edition.
A lot of people will buy NSMB Wii, no doubt. Maybe in the long run it will outsell it, but I'm thinking a Mario Kart DS kind of situation.
What I don't see are hundreds and hundreds of people that pre-ordered coming out in the masses for NSMB Wii. The man is certifiably batshit insane if he thinks it's going to outsell MW2 on the 360 by January.
It's the kind of batshit insanity that results in free publicity and doesn't involve your company slowly going under. And heck, maybe he'll even be right.

This is his job, he knows what he's doing.
Exactly. It gives NSMB a great publicity boost now. If they succeed, that gives it even more publicity than it would have otherwise, most likely further boosting sales. If it fails to outsell MW2, Nintendo's not exactly going to be getting hordes of angry mobs with flaming pitchforks burning their offices down.
Because Disaster: Day of Crisis is the spiritual sequel to some of my favorite PS2 games, Disaster Report and Raw Danger. It was one of the reasons I initially got the Wii along with SMG and Brawl (back when I thought I'd like Brawl).

Then why aren't complaining that Disaster Report 3 hasn't made it to the US?
I am still pissed that Disaster Report 3 never made it here.
But then again, it was never planned for release here, only to have a top-ranking executive say "Nope! Never mind. Don't think it's a right fit for the U.S. audience."
Why Disaster and not the half-dozen games that weren't localized and were actually good?
Where is my Soma Bringer, Nintendo.
Soma Bringer is the only one I can think of that is any good and had zero western release.
Disaster isn't that bad, but not great, Tingle was awesome but got a UK release, as did Trace Memory (Trace Memory still has a chance for the US eventually) and Captain Rainbow has a lot of mixed opinion.
I mean, it's not amazing or anything but it's definitely solid. Basically you go around in disaster areas and rescue people, and then you shoot at dudes, rescue some people, beat up trash cans for supplies, and shoot some more dudes. Occasionally you also drive and sometimes you do QTEs to escape danger.
The combat is pretty much Time Crisis. You can upgrade your weapons between levels and stuff. Rescuing people generally involves some kind of minigame-type action once you find them.

Are there knock-off xbox harddrives out there on the internet? I've found some cheap ones that seem too cheap.

Don't risk it. If MS detects a non-MS HD on your console, you'll get banned from Live.

There's a well-known hack for buying an off-the-shelf hard drive and using it on a 360.
Anecdotally, it seems that any drive that ships from Hong Kong is almost certainly not official.
As was said above, don't mess with illegitimate drives. MS might ban you for it.

On Reggie's bet though, I don't think it's too farfetched. Bright red box + Mario + Wii = a lot of in-store impulse buys for kids for Christmas.
