What software are you using? Are you doing it via Wireless? Do you have any codec packs installed?

Wireless media streaming would not be my first choice.

I would try using TVersity, and install the k-lite codec pack (or install the codec pack that comes with TVersity).

Also if you have multiple wireless devices working at once that'll hurt it.

I had a similar problem with staggering. My wireless router only supported 802.11b, while the PS3 can use 802.11g, which is much faster. After getting a new, relatively inexpensive router, I can stream stuff fine.

I use PlayOn for streaming, but I think the connection is your main problem.

Windows Media Player has built in abilities now which work quite well. I use that and have no issues (though I do use a wired setup).

I've streamed stuff wirelessly using the Java PS3 Media Server before, even HD-MKV files, with barely no stuttering or lag, so it's certainly possible. But I definitely noticed much, much better performance when I went wired.

The bottleneck may not be the wireless though - try playing a file that doesn't require transcoding (in other words, a format the PS3 can read normally) and see if the problem goes away. If it does, either your computer isn't fast enough to transcode on the fly, or you've got some software problems.

I'll echo the suggestion of Tversity. It's super easy to set up, I stream my stuff wirelessly with no problems at all.

TVersity works quite well, so long you're not working with MKVs. Another vote for that.

CCCP will also work, though there's nothing wrong with K-Lite Codec (I've been using it for years, and only recently switched). You don't need to install TVersity's codec pack if you have either.

If you're wanting to stream MKVs...well, I think you're stuck with PS3 Media Server. Which I really don't like for handling AVI and other formats. But it is the only thing that seems to handle MKVs easily.

PS3 Media Server is "slow" on my end as well, and I use a wired connection; and by slow I mean how long it takes the PS3 to communicate with my computer. PS3 Media Server works flawlessly and quickly on the XBOX360 (but I hate their media controls), so I would assume it is a PS3 issue.

Once a file starts playing though, no lag.

TVersity works fine if I am watching episode-long things, but movies just stutter like crazy. I have been thinking I need a new router for a while anyway.

I had issues with slowness, choppyness, and even random disconnects (while wired, but oddly enough not while wireless). I threw a custom firmware on my router (Tomato) and now everything works perfectly. I'm got PS3 Media Server installed on my server and PlayOn on my gaming rig

Having Perian installed means that he's on a Mac, so most of the "install x, y, or z codec pack" suggestions are unlikely to help. I mention this only because the OP left it out and it seemed a rather important point.
