I've been vaguely aware of this game for a few months now but wasnt really sure what it was.
wikipedia:
In the world of Shattered Horizon, Man is back on the Moon and the companies that took him there are reaping huge profits. Their greed soon leads to the largest mining accident in history, which then throws billions of tons of rocky debris into near-Earth space. Fragments of the Moon settle around the Earth and become known as the Arc.
With Earth surrounded by debris there's little chance of rescue or return. Survivors on the Moon are forced into conflict with those trapped on the battered International Space Station. Control of the Arc means the difference between survival and death in the cold of the moon.
[edit]
Gameplay
Shattered Horizon is a multiplayer first-person shooter where players fight in zero gravity surrounded by the broken remains of Earth's orbital infrastructure and billions of tons of rocky debris thrown into orbit by a huge explosion on the Moon.
In Shattered Horizon, players have complete freedom of movement. They can make full use of the space setting and zero gravity to set up tactics and strategies that would be impossible in games constrained by gravity.[1]
The game's designer states that without gravity players will experience gameplay that is both familiar to fans of the FPS style and yet different from any game they've played before.[2]
That looks pretty cool. If that really is in-game footage then color me really impressed. We'll see as it gets closer to release if it's any good though.
Very interesting concept; I feel that if it was pulled off well, it could be fun. The lasting power of what I think is somewhat a gimmicky feature is something we'll have to see as it gets closer to release.

Me thinks someone isn't familiar with little series with call Descent...
God I love the lack of outer space sound effects in that video, it was kind of a "holy shit that's awesome" moment. I think the gameplay will be pretty similar to descent, so it may not be as innovative as they say.
I wonder if you'll be able to hear explosions on gunfire? I figure you can hear your own gun firing (since you're holding it) but if there's a battle behind me, will I know about it if there aren't bullets, etc., flying past me?
I think that would actually be pretty cool if it was silent (perhaps you can hear explosions if it's on something that you're standing on or you're caught directly in the blast radius), make it more tense.

I'm assuming from that video that its like the portions of Dead Space when you're in a vacuum and you only hear your breathing and vibrations and shit.

That would be pretty awesome if they put a lot of work into the sound effects like that, where you breathe heavier when running or gasping when wounded. Especially since everything else would be all quiet and serene but you're all gasping for air. This is all just theoretical of course, I'm just saying that would be pretty cool.

Yeah, the developers:

Looks like it's going to play like old-school Descent, but with bigger environments, better multiplayer, and more shiny bits.
about goddamn time
but yeah, lolfuturemark. Perhaps now the 3DMark suite will have some merit of relevance to real games as well. :P

I wonder if you have to worry about suit leaks when you take a bullet? Could make using pistols interesting.
that problem could be easily explained away by a sci-fi writer. In Battletech, the Elementals auto-patched holes with a tar-like substance, and doped the pilots up with PCP for good measure.
i'd say that you have to approach it in a different manner than a normal shooter. the game rewards careful play. it's not like a game where you can just jump or duck to avoid being hit. you've got a jetpack, sure, but keep your trajectory in mind.
most of all, light and shadow play a big role in the combat. if you're using your jets, you're lit up by the exhaust and anyone can see you. if you cut your propulsion and drift into shadow, you're virtually invisible.
for me, this meant i could wait for enemy interlopers at one of the capture points in the game and take them out before they knew what was happening. so think of it as a environmentally-created cloak.
as for performance, i found the game to work pretty well on my 8800GT. i turned most of the eye candy off, though. adjusting texture resolution didn't make much an impact on the way it looks, but it did make an impact on performance. in any event, you'll definitely want the extra frames per second over extra effects. this isn't a twitch shooter by any means, but situational awareness is EVERYTHING. if you're getting shot at from above and behind you, the sooner you're able to move and turn, the greater the chance you'll survive

I wonder if anyone remembers Heavy Gear 2? It had outer space missions where you had thrusters, but with the sim aspect it was excellent. Also your feet were magnetic, so you could attach to ships and asteroids when needed.
If they can pull off the same craziness of that, I will be most pleased.
I want more mecha damn it!

If they throw in a little Tribes style energy management this could get very interesting.
This looks rad. I think atmosphere is something severely underrepresented in multiplayer games, and is why Facing Worlds with low gravity was so awesome back in the day. I'm instantly sold, and I almost never play online these days.

so. . . gooey details. . . I needs them.
like specifically, when will I be able to have my mind blown in the comfort of my living room/PC chair?
Joystick control isn't currently planned. We prototyped different input methods earlier in the game's development.
5. Will S.H. implement tri-chording? I.e. Are multiple concurrent thrusts vector-added?
[For example, if a player uses a combined forward + left + up thrust, will this result in more acceleration than a single forward thrust?
Acceleration and maximum speed are the same regardless of movement direction and how many keys are pressed at the same time. We abstracted actual thrusters for the sake of intuitive controls.
That's another movement restriction I'm concerned about.
If 'roll' is always right-click + mouse, then I cannot simultaneously 'look' and 'roll'. Is that correct?
That is correct.
I'll definitely be getting it if people mod in more realistic maneuvering. Goddamnit, it should be difficult to get used to!
Systems specs out, dx10 only. Min specs E6600 or amdx2 5600, 2gb of ram, and wait for it..... 8800gt or 3870.
What they recommend, AMD phenomII 940 or core2 quad, 2gb of ram (WTF it didn't change) and nvidia GX260 or ATI 4850.
Shocking high on the video card end, but rather nice. I'm all for killing off DX9 and moving on, it's holding us back. Down side means it's about time to ditch the dual 8800's in my AMD rig, move the dual 260's in them and invest in some of those new ati cards.
Further demonstrating that their expertise is in developing unoptimized benchmarks. Crysis will end up looking better in the end, being an older game that requires fewer resources to run.

That's rather bullshit, IMHO.
This is the first "dx10 and up only" game. This has gone down with ANY dx version. Issue is that DX10 only picked up with the 8800 2900 series cards. The ati 2xxx series was crap, and anything on nvidias side below an 8800 was shit.
It will be nice to see how this plays out. But honestly, it's time to kill of DX9 permanently, it's old, it's dated, and if it wasn't for vista sucking ass and ati/nvidia dropping the ball generation one of the hardware we should have seen this by now.
Hell it's Dx11 now, and we are seeing the first dx10 only gameo_O dx9 only came out far before dx10, even dx9.0c only came out far before dx10.
while this looks neat I really hope it has more going for it than just zero-g jet-packing and guns.
Imagine if you could fly spacefighters plus eject and zip around with your jetpack for some awesome insane fights, board enemy craft and installations, etc.
It looks like this is coming out sooner than later and at a budget price of $20. Multiplayer only is a bold move on a new franchise and a first game. I'm more curious to try it out now - I think I might grab it off steam while it is 10% off.
This looks really interesting. Looks like it's out in a week. I would hold off on testing it out if it were more expensive, but it's at a reasonable price, and it's the kind of sci-fi that piques my interest.
Just finished watching the trailer. Potentially very cool, though some bits still looked off. Only about 80% impressed, and 35% interested; too many unknowns for me to get overly worked up.
Also only Vista/7 means I won't be able to play for the foreseeable future even if I wanted to. Unless I can swing a cheap upgrade.
Not having tri-chording seems like a pretty pointless misstep for a number of reasons. First, a lot of people remember and love Descent, and the multiplayer was able to stand up to the likes of Quake at the time because of things like tri-chording. Second, if it's PC only, then there's no reason not have it; I could understand leaving it out because it would be basically almost impossible to pull of with a pad. Third builds on the first point: this seems to be miltiplayer focused, so why leave out things that will make the multiplayer deeper and more skill based?
Still, it's been way too long since the y axis played a significant roll in a shooter.
One of the major reasons dx10 didn't catch on was because they refused to back port it to XP. Vista had some crazy rejection rate near 75% for consumer use and the devs aren't so stupid as to ditch three quarters of their potential market. It will be a while yet (12 - 18 months minimum) before we really start seeing better dx10 adoption. It might get passed up altogether in favor of dx11 given the lifecycle of video cards. I think I may grab this. 20$ is my impulse point for just about any game - about the equivalent of trying out a restaurant and getting a bad meal.

All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.

seems cool. . . it would be interesting to see how the no sound would affect gameplay. . . probably slow it to a crawl.
I imagine they'll just invent some way for your UI to keep you aware of your surroundings.
edit: also, ellipseses for life!

Maybe they didn't pull it off well, because I found it way too unintuitive to really get anything.
Hopefully we'll get a chance to see how it all plays.
I hope this isn't a new trend in games. I probably won't be getting this game for years.
It's DX10 only, which should have been the standard for a while.
They are ditching DX9, it's done, dead, move the fuck on.
